"I think he's got some gas in his tank," Parcells said. "Marcellus is doing well. He's working hard. I think he's in shape to play."

......

"He (Parcells) knows how to coach; he knows how to get every player better," Wiley said. "I've seen that already; he doesn't miss a beat. He has taught me a few techniques, just positioning that I had gotten away from. He's also told me how to approach play to play. Just having him concerned, having him at every weight-room session, is something I never had a coach do. Every single session, he was there, talking to me casually or in detail on how to play the game."

That includes applying verbal pressure when Parcells believes he's not getting maximum effort, which he did after Wiley's sackless performance in Saturday's 18-0 exhibition loss to Houston. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported that Parcells sliced into Wiley after the game, believing the player was slow, out of shape and unmotivated.

Is Wiley in shape, or isn't he? Magee always writes this junk that makes no sense.

Oh, he also failed to mention that Wiley is battling for a starting job with some scrub.

One of the most surprising battles for a starting job may come between Marcellus Wiley and Kenyon Coleman at defensive end.

I still don't get why these reporters treat Marcy with kid gloves. Oh, "he's quotable." What a crock of crap. He also is an underachiever, a whiner, a blamer, and a flat out jerk.

I'd like to chalk up Magee's idiocy to senility, but since he wrote crap 30 years ago, it can't be that.

You would think that a NFL reporter that lives in San Diego would have a better insight into his home team, but everytime I read his articles I disagree with 90% of what he says. He has no original thoughts anymore, 20 years ago, he was more insightful, and at least knew what was happening with the Chargers, I wish I could say that now. Why an article on Wiley, why not one on Igor, Ball, Rivers, LT, or something that would be of interest to San Diego Charger fans? The UT needs to tell him to get a job with the Cowgirls, because he very rarely prints positive info on the Chargers.

The link doesn't work, I figure that shows that the U-T agrees with you. i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif

I've supported the idea that Magee is senile for years. This article proves it.

I never have figured out Magee. He was always a jerk towards the Bolts, even when we were good. It's like he always wrote his column with the intent of selling it to PFW, rather than how it would be received by the San Diego community.

When I was a kid, my G'pa would give my some change and tell me to go buy a Tribune in the afternoon (he always gave me enough to buy that and a Slurpee from 7-11). I asked him why he wanted a Trib, when they got the Union delivered every morning. "Because the Charger news is better in the Tribune," he always said.

He loved reading Murphy, and hated Magee.

Side note:

When I was at Ford Ord in the early 90's, I became good friends with the Monterey Herald Golf editor, Bob Hughes (now deceased - Bob used to be a "regular" coffee counter guy where my wife waitressed.) Bob was an "old school" sports reporter, at that time in his late 60's. He knew all the big old school guys from around the country, and knocked back beers with them after events (primarily Monterey's golf tourneys.) I asked him one time about Murphy and Magee. He said he really liked Murph (didn't everybody?) but Magee was "as dumb as a rock." Just another tidbit that fit my theory.......

It has been YEARS since I have read an article by Magee. To me, it’s like he doesn’t exist.

That’s how badly he sucks; I’m so starved for football news that I’ll read just about anything, but Magee’s stuff is a waste of my time.

I read Jack Murphy's column first every day. Murphy, was really an interesting person/writer. When he died I was sad as if I knew him. I guess in a way, I did. Remember the "Abe of Spoon River" stuff?

When Jerry Magee was writing for the PFW he always referred to the Chargers as "my little team". That always kind of irked me. When I was working at Company HQ. in N.Y. Magee's articles in PFW were my best way to keep up with the team for things like injuries and transactions. The N.Y. papers didn't bother writing too much about the teams outside of N.Y, especially the West coast teams.

PFW was a favorite of mine until they offered this big deal on a long term subscription. After I signed up for it, they filed for bankruptcy and I never got a paper or a refund. Cheating *******!

Is there a Jack Murphy column book? That would be a great read. Every young Bolt fan (including my age) should read his columns.

More Murph.....

I lived with my G'parents mostly when in my teenage years, and G'pa would always leave the good stuff in the paper highlighted by "my" area of the kitchen table (G'pa usually left for work before I awoke). Anyway, he woke me up to read the dog columns. G'pa never cried (Pearl Harbor vet) but he had a tear in his eye about Murphy's dogs .....

PFW did give everybody a screwing when they went bankrupt. Another thing that irks me about the Arkush family is that on their radio show, he likes to interject his "political thoughts" every once in a while. I could care less about a sports guys political leaning. Same with celebrities. I don't subscribe to PFW anymore, because there is nothing in their that I don't already know anymore. There stat stuff is good, but you can still find most of that around the net for free. If you ever have trouble finding a stat, just ask Goofy Crow. He knows where every stat is on the net, even how to figure QB ratings by quarter .....

Talk about getting stuck on season tickets, 1960 Bolt Fan and I had season tickets to the San Diego Clippers, paid in full, and they moved, didn't get my money back, I also lost money on the old Conqustidors. Now back to Magee, I think he is ticked off at the Chargers, they probably wouldn't let him ride a team plane or cut off his donut supply, because he has not written one good, positive article on the Chargers in the last 20 years. I read any article on football, less than 1% on baseball and basketball, and Magee is the only guy that I can't read on football. There is never anything interesting in his articles.

The more Murphy stories the better.
My folks were Union people. Didn't like the Tribune.
Magee bores the heck outta me, so I've never read him and didn't have the pleasure of reading any Murphy material.

But the Trib always had better Chargers nuggets, especially during camp and preseason. At least in the mid to late 70's. I couldn't believe the difference in information between the two papers then.

But the Trib didn't have Jack Murphy ......

I agree, unfortunately pretty much the whole stable of UT writers are negative. I think it starts with an attitude of,"if you won't let us into practice, we will slam you". That's the way I read the problem.
I get 0 info from them and just negative stuff. We will go to the playoffs and all they will say is how lucky we are.
I get 95% of my Charger info from the forums. I think it is great and sad at the same time that we have to go to out of town and out of state publications to read good things and info on the Bolts.
Maybe we should all write letters to the editor on the subject.

The nature of the beast I guess. I was told by a member of the media “we don’t write about the planes landing safely.”

And the important thing is for Bolt fans to understand that the news media tends to dwell on the negative. I guess it gets ratings. It happens all the time, the typical TV show, the typical newspaper article focuses on murders and rapes. It’s no different in sports today. As a fan you have to make your own conclusions, sometimes writers are dead on, other times they are not. The media has a lot of power, but with the technology it is changing and especially with message boards.

The Times Advocate has fairly positive articles on the Chargers. I am going to cancel my subscription to the UT, I can read the articles on the web, and they don't deserve my money.
