I read that Marty has decided to give quite a bit of playing time to Rivers tonight. -
http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/chargers/20040827-9999-1s27chargers.html
I'm a little disappointed in that decision because I wanted to see the first team against the Seattle first team for the entire first half tonight. I think Brees and the receivers need all the game experience together they can get. On the other hand, I am anxious to see Rivers play.

I am trying to get excited about a preseason game. i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif I know as soon as I get to the game I will be. I want to see if we can get some pressure on Matt Hasselbeck, unlike the Colts game Manning was not in long enough for me to see what we can do against good QB’s.

I thought all the SeaSquacks games were broadcast in Portland?
They can kick a 53 yarder, but we can't even try a 49-50 yarder?
The defense can't stop them?
Lassiter .... pass interference .... Why is he still on this team?
From what the other guys said, Brees INT was pretty bad.

This sounds pretty bad so far. They are having their way with the D. The offense isn't getting it done - come on special teams!

I don't even know why the seahawks are trying the run the ball. All they got to do is pass to our flats and underneath. I think our run defense has been better than average tonight, but we are so open in the short passing game, it isn't funny.
"The offense has been less than good."

Where is Brees tonight? I thought he'd be showing up to prove his worth... I was wrong. I don't know what was worse about the interception, the fact that there was no zip on the ball Brees threw or the fact that it would have hit Dyson in the back of the head. i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif

One thing I notice about Zeke Moreno... He's always where the play is, only after it's been made... We need to get some pressure on their QB.

If Dyson hadn't fell, probably would have been a complete pass. Harder to tell with Brees' interception... First the ball was slow and second Dyson wasn't even looking for it. Though I'd put most of the blame on Brees.

I'd really like to see Dave Ball start next week... I think he's got more range than Igor and has a greater push off the line. Also, he has many intangibles... for instance on one of the last drives for the hags, he was pushed out of the play but still had the focus to get a hand on the QBs pads... This guy makes plays happen.
Ball stripped from Flutie... Where is Guff Crow now? i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif No one picked up the Line Backer on the playaction/roll out to the right.

I really have got to get home to see these tapes. Honest, the game I saw him in, I specifically rewatched it to view some draftable players (him and the UCLA safety - Ware???). Anyway, neither was impressive, and Ball got pushed around by that Fresno State kid. I wonder if Ball lost draft position specifically on that game.

I missed the game you're talking about, though I did catch him most of the season last year because Mrs. Xnet is a huge Bruin fan. He's got wheels and he never gives up on a play. Igor hasn't impressed me and I'm curious to see how Ball does against the first stringers because you'll see in this game, he's a playmaker.

Did anyone mention that on the run back by Welker the blocking didn't amount to much? He pretty much did it on his own. Guffy will say that Flutie told him how to do it.
On Flutie's first pass to Mattos, the pass was way high and Mattos went up in the air like Alworth or JJ and snatched that pass - stretched out as high as he could get and he was also being hit as he caught it. - Great catch - that kid has hands!

Sorry Sham, I missed it (the future father-in-law came by and it got kind of chaotic). I don't know how much creadence I'd put into it though. I didn't especially feel that Marty was being ignored on the sideline. I think a lot of guys want there to be a controversy to take focus away from the gameplay in general. For all we know Phillips was listening while getting his point across to the players. Its really out of context. Perhaps 'Roo caught it. The rookie TE, Edwards can block! I'm saying he hurts people when he blocks. He also managed to be wide open on the TD catch. I couldn't tell if he did with a great move or if it was blown coverage. The TV feed was from Seattle and they kept cutting to the sidelines to interview the S hawk players and they'd shrink the game down to a small so I really could pick up the numbers on the linemen very good. For instance, I saw a blown block at left Guard but don't know who was playing LG at the time.
On defense, you have got to love the play of Bell at DE, Cooper and Phillips at LB. nd the Corner we got from Miami - Fletcher - he's a good tackler and his coverage was pretty solid in this game. I had thought he was a draft choice that didn't make it and Miami threw him in to get rid of the salary. I'm not so sure now - he just may be pretty decent.

Mattos can't run as fast as Lance, if he could there would be no question about who our number one was. I did see the incident on the sidelines with Wade and Marty. I didn't think it amounted to anything - Wade was talking to players while Marty was trying to talk to him. I don't think either were annoyed. However, the Seattle announcer thought Wade was ignoring Marty. Maybe he's right, maybe I'm right.

The guys with the best hands are also somewhat slow and sometimes you do want to be able to fire a deep pass to a speedy receiver. What about Dyson? Has he done anything to make you want to keep him?
They have to keep Welker - he's a play maker. Here's a mystery for you - Welker has a slow forty time, so how come he outran everone on the field on that punt returen? - Guess he has a fast 81 yard time! i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif

I haven't seen Dyson yet. I can only go by what you and Cowtown have told me, but it doesn't seem like he's done much. I don't think his history translates into a legitimate #1.
Speed. That's why I'm against drafting Mike Williams above #15 in next year's first round. He won't stretch the field. He'll be great around the goal line, but he won't make the defense alter its scheme. We need speed to not only stretch the field, but to get the defense away from 8 in the box.
Welker is one of those guys that plays faster than his 40 I guess.
BTW: Since I had to fix the AC last night, I had to get a motel room. I watched ESPN late last night and this morning, and they ran Mike Williams info ad nauseum. Lots of highlights. I never once saw him pull away from anyone. He is good at using his height and size to shield small DB's in close quarters. He's a nice Red zone WR, but not a legit #1.
I don't think we need Caldwell or Dryson. Haven't really seen whether Dwight has his hands back or not this season, but I tend to think we should go with players we know can hang on to the ball over those with a little more flash. Osgood and Mattos are solid. I'd really like to see what Floyd can do, but it appears he's probably going to be injury prone as well. Why can't these guys get some meat on their bones?

TE's: Gates, Peele, Edwards, (what about Krause? - great speed for a TE - keep him instead of Peele?)
Cooper has to be in the starting lineup.

More than ugly... embarrasing would be the proper word. The defense did better than the score suggests, but once again our receivers and qbs let us down.
Let me know what you think, but I think Rivers, while looking excellent in his first drive, looked like he was trying to force the ball and hurried his throws. He's not ready to be our starter and quite frankly, Brees looked flat under the competitive preassure. Dryson is a flop. We should get rid of him along with Caldwell (Dryson and Caldwell may be the same player-- conspiracy?) We definitely need to find a stud #1 receiver. Parker is fast and can catch, but not if he's on the sideline injured. Floyd who looked great in TC hasn't played because he's injured and Tim Dwight will most likely get injured too (if History is any judge). So where does that lead us? The line was good enough to allow a passing game. They weren't great, but I don't feel like our skills guys had any major excuse in them.
Defensively, we never had enough pressure on Hassleback in the first half. Igor doesn't go any further than the line. Where is Dave Ball? He, Cooper and Phillips should be on the starting squad next week. Hopefully we get to see Edwards play some to. I think the DBs did fine. I'm not as worried about our secondary as some others, because if we can get some pressure on the opposing QB, they will do just fine. Linebackers stick out like a sore thumb when it comes to pass defense. We are going to get eaten alive in the flats and there won't be a thing we can do about it.
This sucks. We completely dominate a team that we should dominate last week, and this week we get our jockstraps handed to us. Where exactly does that put us? Somewhere in the Middle? Hardly.
Thursday can't come soon enough.

Last night was what could be called "growing pains" that young teams must go through. The high of beating up the Cardinals and then the low of getting it done to you. The difference I seen with the Cards is they gave up, I didn’t see that in the Bolts last night. Are we going to surprise a few people this year? I hope so. Will we play better ball this year then last season? I still think so. I think we came out with no any major injuries and thats reall good in my viewpoint. Live to fight another day as they say.
I watched the game that Shamrock is mentioning where Dave Ball didn't play well against Fresno State. One thing I'd like to bring up was that SF was a quagmire and that field was about as bad as I've seen any college game played in. It's tough to look good when your game is built off of footwork and redirection AND you have NO FOOTING.

Good point RC ........ and I like your cola too! I don't know about Ball in that Fresno game but along with Phillips, he's looking pretty darn good as a Charger. Ball is actually looking better than our second round pick - Igor, who I loved at OU. (I'm a Ducks fan). I still think Igor will be a very good pro as time goes by. He never quits and he learns pretty fast. By next year I think we'll have a good pass rush by next year.

I don't have a copy of that Bulldog - Bruin game anymore (dumbarse me recorded the draft over it) but some players seemed to handle the mud. Fresno State's OL and RB's played well, but UCLA's DL did not.
The only time D. Ball was somewhat effective was on inside stunts, where he was passed off to a guard (the Fresno State center also handled him.)
The draft clips on ESPN also showed him being handled by the USC LT pretty well, similar to what Shack did to him.
Roo,
I was listening to the KC vs. Cleveland game on the radio, and the KC radio guys were raving about the job Cleveland's backup center was doing.......
His name? Craig Osika ...... ring a bell?
Dave Ball didn't have a bad game against USC. From what I recall, he had a sack, a tfl, and a forced fumble coupled with numerous pressures ... but hey draft clips of Jacob Rogers showed a couple of plays where Rogers got the better of him. OK. The three pro prospects he faced, he had sacks against. The game against the Golden Bears was one of his better one. Calvin Armstrong (WSU, probable 2nd round pick), Jacob Rogers (USC, Cowboys 2nd rounder), and Mark Wilson (Cal, Redskins, 5th rounder)
I'll state it again ... guys that depend on balance and change of direction are going to suffer more than others in the muck. I watched Dave Ball that game and the guy couldn't get proper footing. If you are going to use that game as a justification of his prospect status, I think you are making a mistake.
Shamrock
08-29-2004, 12:56 AM
Since I didn't see the UCLA - USC game, I can't comment on how Ball got his sack. The clips showed Rogers manhandling him. Dartangon Shack of Fresno State manhandled Ball the entire game. An "All American" senior should not be manhandled by a sophomore working out of position. Shack tied up Ball in the short space, and controlled him on the outside, even in the few areas of the field that weren't sloppy. You can blame it on the muck all you want, or use "footwork" as an excuse, but he was a non factor. The Fresno State RB has no problem cutting, why shouldn't Ball have been able to?
Should the Chargers not play Ball if it's sprinkling?
I'm so sick of excuses, whether they be for a guys college career, or for homerism. I think I'll listen to people who DIDN'T support keeping Wiley and Boston, over a manipulative poster from the NFL Forum.

Ball is the only lineman to put consistant pressure on the QB, He has 4 sacks, and has caused at least one fumble. To me Igor is looking like a noseguard, he is tough against the run but does not have any moves to get past the guy whos blocking him. Igor needs to at least get his hands up if he cant get to the QB, he is tall enough to knock down passes and disrupt the QB's vision. Ball, Fisk, and Williams would be my starting three D linemen, is its a running down I would replace Ball with Igor, but Ball needs to be in there on passing downs for sure.

I don't know how good Edwards is at getting open and catching but I've seen him make some great blocks. He would be the perfect H back for Bobby Ross! I hope they keep him. With a double TE formation of Peele and Edwards I bet LT could run like crazy.
I'm like you on Norman - too many drops! I wonder about Krause? He seems a bit of a project. He's quite fast for a TE though. I bet he ends up on the Practice Squad.
I really hadn't paid much attention to Shamrock on the other board until he started personal attacks. I do find his analysis of this situation to be as shallow as his analysis on a lot of things. I think discounting Dave Ball because of a highlight clip on Jacob Rogers and a game where the footing sucked is ridiculous. I've ripped him on shallow analysis before, but if someone throws out opinions ... you expect to have some discussion on them (hence, the concept of "discussion board"). Instead of stating his reasons on why he believes his opinion is legitimate, he throws a temper tantrum.
On a side note, I felt that getting rid of both David Boston AND Marcellus Wiley this year was a mistake because of all the dead cap money. From the very beginning, I think this team will struggle badly as a direct result of all the $23+ M in lost cap space. Some people can praise AJ all they want, but IMO if AJ would have taken the money saved next year and creatively structured contracts ... we'd be in a better position to win. I would have been less critical. I'd also like to say that my position was Wiley needed to take a significant paycut for him to stay on the team (a point he conveniently disregarded) and his relationship with Phillips might have helped that point. I was more critical of the fact that he wasn't approached about it rather than getting rid of him outright. I've been super critical of this organization and the way they approach players for pay cuts. It seems ironic that teams like the Raiders get their veterans to do something other than restructure, while we simply get rid of players.
As far as Boston, I felt the cap hit and the fact that he was are only productive WR made his release a questionable decision. People disagreed, but the fact that AJ didn't amply replace him with the flexibility created in year 2 was shortsighted as hell. Addition by subtraction. I've stated from the very beginning if we would have replaced him, I think we could have overcome the loss of production and the decision could have been more acceptable. Instead, we are going with Kevin Dyson and his band of merry men.

Both should improve, but I am still having trrouble seeing us rush the passer. The first team seattle line kept us completely away from Hasselback.

Do I ever agree with that. If the lines aren't able to win at the los, we can expect another long season. We do have several young guys in the lines that look promising but you have to wonder how they'll do in their rookie or second year? Of course, the improvement in the line had to start somewhere and it seems to me that AJ realized that and went after young people. Maybe we'll be sacrificing another year but maybe it'll finally lead us to several years of having a winning team again. I think if we had spent more draft picks on linemen over the years, a lot of theses losing years could have been avoided.
Welcome to the board!!

I agree with you on Ball, but Shamrock has a right to make a statement on his opinion which was based on what he saw, doesn't mean he's right or wrong, freedom of speech, more or less.
I disagree with you on AJ, and keeping Wiley who was a slug and taking up a spot on the roster that a good DE, like Ball or Igor can fill.
Shamrock is one of my favorite posters, and he is on the money 95% of the time, except on Ball.
I disagree with you on Boston, who was a cancer, and was not a team player, and who disrupted team chemistry. Getting rid of both of them is addition by subtraction. Replacing him was not a concern, we would be better with one less WR and one less player on the team, then having that Prima Donna disrupt team meetings and team game plans. AJ still has time to get a WR, team cuts are deep and good players do get the ax, so by the first game we may have a new WR.
I agree with you, Dyson, is not the answer, but nothing ventured, nothing gained, and who knows he might have played up to his old self, he hasn't and he should get cut.

My Opinion- The Seattle game showed us how important the Defense has got to stop an opponent's third down efficiency. Those third and long conversions are a slow killer of the time clock. Our offense has to sustain a drive to keep the defense well rested for that 3 and out pulse of attack

I actually liked David Boston, very shy guy, every encounter I had with him was always very pleasant. I didn’t see him as a “negative influence” more of a NO influence guy. He didn’t really show any passion for the game. If he could ever get a clear head, no doubt he would be a top 5 receiver.

You could say the same for a lot of players who come down the pike. I still think Ryan Leaf could have been a great QB if it weren't for the fact that he didn't seem to want to play football. To me, Boston is the same type of player, and players like that, once they are set-for-life rich, will never display the all-out effort that got them their fat contract. Boston should be a 100-catch 1500-yard reciver considering how physically dominating he can be. Problem is, he would have had to try...
