URGENT: Send water and ammunition. Things seem quiet at the moment, however we're expecting a busy autumn. We sent out an expeditionary force across the Colorado line about a week ago and they returned shaken and sore. No serious casualties, just a few cases of battle fatigue. 'mumblings of wild horses attacking the column. No sign of Indians as yet. The scouts report they've got their hands full at the moment and we should'nt need to worry much about them 'till around thanksgiving. 'not sure what their strength will be by then but we'll be expecting a good scap as always. As far as the renegade "raiding" parties we've been running into about twice a year, no sign of them yet but we're expecting them soon. I'm seriously considering placing young leutenant Rivers in command of 1st Company. Captain Brees seems to be showing signs of hesitation as well as indecision. As you well know, the morale of the men has to be considered. It will be a difficult decision but one that will have to be made soon. There comes a time when the training stops and the fight begins. It seems to always be too soon, but I'm confident he'll prove to be up to the task. There's just something about that kid. The locals, although highly resentive of our presence, seem to be warming up a bit although still a bit wary.It seems, with help from the sutlers store, They seem to be rather easily placated with large amouts of beer and hardtack as long as there's plenty of what they call "guacamole", some sort of green mush made of a rather small gourd. Thats all for now, We all miss home. It would be nice to see more than just a 2gal. pail of water at a time. Col. Butcher
