aww man I just got home from work and found out that todays game got rained out and peavy was supposed to pitch. So I taped a whole 3 and a half hours of nothing. :( The good news is that I'm off tomorrow and I'll be watching baseball all day long!

Double Header Tomorrow
Peav faces Woods at 10am pt
B-Law vs Prior. Game Starts 20 30 mins after the first.

I wounder why the cubs decided to flip flop there pitching rotaition. Might be because they think Woods has a better chance vs The Peav Mister, But he's still gonna tear him apart. B-Law well finish the series up tomorrow with a sweep and send our boys to LA to get a peice of them crappy dodgers.

NLCS Here We Come!!

Go PADRES!

Nicholas Wood, sportswriter for Wisconsin Sports Weekly, predicts the San Diego Padres to win the N.L. West.

San Diego Padres 90-72 .....
Los Angeles 85-77 5
San Fransisco 80-82 10
Arizona 66-96 24
Colorado 60-102 30

It seems the Pads got at least one believer in the land of the cheesehead! Well, maybe two, but I'm basically all Chargers Football. I just thought you may be interested.

Dan40
04-13-2005, 10:18 AM
Last year I predicted 82-80 for the Padres, and they finished 87-75.

This year, I say 88-74. Which might be good enough for a wildcard or maybe win the west.

After running around the last week or so, I can actually sit down and watch today's doubleheader, which I am very happy about. :)

I'm a St. Louis Cardinals fan, so I'm hoping the Pads sweep the cubbies up. The cubs are just like the raiders to me.

Have you all heard that Albert Pujols went the entire spring training without striking out, and still has not struck out one time this season. The guy is a monster...if he stays healthy, he could be one of the best pure hitters ever.

As for the Padres, I do think Peavy has a good chance at winning the Cy Young this year, but only if the Padres make the playoffs. If they miss the playoffs, he'll get overlooked by all the sportswriters on the east coast. They'll give it to Pedro Martinez or something, just because he plays in NY. :(

This off-topic forum is nice to have. Thanks to the mods and Joel for setting it up.

Oh well - 2/3 in Chicago...I'll take it. Too bad Lawrence got shelled from the get-go. Keep those 0-2 pitches outta the zone man!

Albert Pujols is outrageous....dude struck out 52 times last year in nearly 600 at-bats...what a hitter.

B Law I hope will come on strong soon. Looks like to me that Eaton is going to get a big name like Peavy if he keeps on pitching the way he is. Williams is pitching well. Redding lost because of defensive lapses but I have a feeling we will win between 89-95 games this year.

After they jumped out to that sweet 5 run lead in the first game of the doulbleheader, I was almost sure they were going to get out the broom on those old loser Cubbies at Wrigley. I was listening on the car radio as Flan tried to explain why we kept getting nailed on 0 and 2 pitches. One time Flan swore it was a low sinkerball that was great pitch that got blasted up and away. Note to Flan....we no longer have the GREAT Randy (Jones) tossing up those sinker gems of his. I recall the great hitters Pete Rose and Mike Scmidt (sp) pounding their bats into the ground in utter frustration after going hitless all night versus Randy 's sinker magic. I remember one home game against the Mets when we went ahead 1 to zip in the 5th inning with Randy on the mound. Three Padre fans stood up behind us and declared loudly 'IT'S A ROUT'. They were almost right and, we went on to win going away 1 to 0 against the great Tom Seaver, no less!

Alderson takes job as Padres CEO
Former A's GM moves over from Commissioner's office
By Barry M. Bloom / MLB.com

print this page | e-mail this page
SAN DIEGO -- Sandy Alderson has been named the Padres' chief executive, said John Moores, the team's majority owner, meaning the hierarchy of the baseball club and the Commissioner's office in New York has changed in one move.

Alderson will immediately leave his post as Major League Baseball's executive vice president in charge of baseball operations to take over the day-to-day operations of the Padres.

Alderson had previously been with the Oakland A's from 1981 until he left for MLB in 1998, holding the positions of general counsel, general manager and president. His Oakland tenure included the A's most recent era as a powerhouse when they won three consecutive American League pennants from 1988-90 and the World Series in 1989.

"For me this is the last piece of a complicated puzzle that involved building a ballpark and redeveloping San Diego," Moores said on Monday before the Giants played the Padres at PETCO Park. "It's time to build a competitive team and it allows us to significantly strengthen our management team.

"I think this is our most significant signing in the 11 years I've owned the team."

In signing Alderson to a five-year contract, Moores is juggling the Padres hierarchy for the fourth time since current Red Sox CEO Larry Lucchino stepped down as team president after the 2002 season. Since then, and in succession, Moores hired Bob Vizas, Charles Black and Dick Freeman to run the team.

Freeman, who returned to the Padres from the Pittsburgh Pirates before the 2003 season, the team's last at Qualcomm Stadium in Mission Valley, will remain under Alderson as president and chief operating officer. General manager Kevin Towers is under contract through the 2007 season and manager Bruce Bochy's current deal expires at the end of this season.

Bochy had been hoping to negotiate a contract extension before the end of Spring Training, but those negotiations were put on hold while Moores sought permission from Commissioner Bud Selig to talk to Alderson and then brought him into the fold.

The future of Bochy and Towers in the organization will be up to Alderson, Moores said, although he doesn't expect any immediate changes. Bochy has been the team's manager since 1995 and Towers replaced Randy Smith a year later.

Moores recently took over as chairman of the Carter Center in Atlanta and said last month that accordingly he would be spending less time than usual around the team this season. He also has been becoming increasingly more distressed about the state of the team's Minor League operations and the condition of its academy in the Dominican Republic.

"You know I've been worried about our Minor League system," Moores said. "And Sandy has a strong background as a president, GM and a big deal at MLB."

---------------------------------

Interesting! Some major changes could be coming in the future. Stay tuned! This also explains why Moores stalled on the Boch extension.

I think that Kevin is pretty good, but Boch is a player's coach. His job is to be the leader so the team wins games.

Wow, nice game A-Rod! Two more homers and 4 more RBI's and he actually would have earned his per game salary of $125,000.00. Joking aside - that's a heck of a game.

What about those Padre relief pitchers? Did the coach mention to them that the idea is to get people out? The Pads will never make it to post-season with relief pitching like they've been getting so far.

I have all ready said I did not like this staff, and was almost read a riot act. If this staff cant beat the likes of a Arizona or San Francisco, it is going to be a very long Season, you cant expect to score a bazillion runs every single game, a pitcher has to be able to go out there and hold a 1 run lead, right now that 1 run lead is like a handfull of sand!

Avg. .237
HR 5
RBI 20
BB 5
K 20
R 12
H 22

Regardless, I still love any Padre. I just hope he swings the bat a little better. This can be our year! Nobody in the NL sticks out, and the NL West is a very competitive division this year. The Rockies are always the lone team out of the race every year(yay!).

Brian Giles is hot, Ryan Klesko was hot, and that Pitching staff I dont like is starting to come together, I would like them to make me eat some crow, prove to me they are a Staff. But right now this is only May, the Dog days are still way in the future.

But hey lets enjoy it while we can, and lets watch as the Dodger fans fall back to earth. That is the fun part, they were walking on the moon, and when you tell them it is only April, they didnt want to hear any of it.And as those bubbles burst, and as their descent to earth gathers momentum, Every night as you see a shooting Star, thats just another Dodger fan falling back to Earth.

Well,
I stopped watching ESPN for that simple reason a while back. To me its just a bunch of "crap" as you call it. And I'm just not interested in waisting my time on watching 59 mins and 50 seconds of the BS just to get a 10 second clip of Trevor's 400th save highlight.

I personally have taken it upon myself in boycotting ESPN, and I encourage everyone to do the same thing if you don't feel the love like me. The problem with boycotting ESPN is that it only leaves Fox Sports Net which is even worse. Fox claims to have the SoCal Report but they might as well call it the LA report since all they talk about are LA teams. Since when was a meaningless Laker game in January a bigger socal sporting event then an NFL playoff football game featuring a team from the socal area?

I was going to say the same thing. If I remember right he was blowing people away an great assortment of pitches but had an auto accident and was never quite the same after that. But winning the Cy Young with a bad team was quite an accomplishment. I hope Peavy can win a Cy Young award too but I hope he doesn't have to do it on a last place team.

It was a pleasant shock, but of course they had to add "the team that has almost been as hot as the Yankees". Will they please get off that east coast crack??? The Padres are hands down the hottest team in baseball! I think 14 out of 17 is better then 9 straight, and I really haven't been paying attention, but it looks like the bats have been the reason for this sudden winning streak of theirs... not pitching :D

Speaking of the Padres on ESPN... Sportscenter opened with highlights from last nights game on the 10:00pm edition.

Padres rock!

It has been both pitching and hitting. Our pitchers hold up until the 6th inning then the wheels fall off. but starting in the seventh inning our bats wake up and we win!!!!:D

I was going to say the same thing. If I remember right he was blowing people away an great assortment of pitches but had an auto accident and was never quite the same after that. But winning the Cy Young with a bad team was quite an accomplishment. I hope Peavy can win a Cy Young award too but I hope he doesn't have to do it on a last place team.Randy Jones lived in and around the knee's his favorite pitch was his Sinker. You infield had better be on their toes when the Pitcher is doing that, a lot of ground balls were hit!

That's so true. He sometimes only had a couple of pitches hit to the outfield in the entire game. The outfielders must have had a difficult time staying awake. Kept the infielders wide awake though!

This years Padres team looks a bit better than the ones Randy pitched on. :)

Well now it looks like Lorreta is going to have Surgery, not good

Loretta (http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/padres/20050523-1818-bbn-padres-lorettasurgery.html)

SAN DIEGO – Padres All-Star second baseman Mark Loretta is scheduled to have surgery on a torn ligament in his left thumb Tuesday and is expected to miss at least two months.

Loretta was examined Monday in Scottsdale, Ariz., by hand specialist Dr. Don Sheridan, who repaired the same ligament four years ago. Sheridan will perform the operation Tuesday.

Loretta was hurt while sliding headfirst into first base while beating out an infield single against Atlanta last Tuesday night.

The Padres were cautiously optimistic after the injury, "but I think it was a little bit of false hope," Loretta said by phone on Monday. "Really, the diagnosis isn't any different than what the San Diego doctor gave me. It's a torn ligament, and there hasn't been much success of players coming back without getting it fixed.

"It's sore and there's not a lot of strength, which you need to swing the bat," he said. "Rather than trying to play through it and risk not being able to be any kind of contributing factor and put off the surgery and risk more extensive surgery down the road, we'll do it now. I want to come back for the stretch drive."

General manager Kevin Towers said that if Loretta needs reconstructive surgery, he'll be out for the rest of the season.

"Again, it depends on how much they have to do in there," said Loretta, who hopes to be back sometime after the All-Star break. "This doctor is pretty optimistic that he won't have to do that based on what he knows from operating on me before. That's really one of the deciding factors, is to try to avoid reconstruction.

"There aren't too many cases where somebody had to have it done twice. He'll do everything he can to have me back ASAP," Loretta said.

Loretta tore the same ligament during spring training in 2001 while with Milwaukee and missed 68 games.

He played in San Diego's first 40 games and was hitting .300 with 13 RBIs and a .388 on-base percentage.

Loretta had a career year in 2004, batting .335, eighth-highest in team history, with 208 hits. He became the only player in Padres history besides Tony Gwynn to get more than 200 hits in a season.

"It hurts, but we're not hanging our heads here," Towers said. "This has happened to other clubs within our division. He's one of the leaders in the clubhouse, and was our best offensive player last year. Not having his presence in the lineup is a blow, but we've got to overcome it. Somebody's going to have to pick up where Mark was."

The Padres will use Geoff Blum and Damian Jackson at second base. Towers said they will add a player to the 25-man roster to take Loretta's spot before Tuesday night's game at NL West-leading Arizona.

The Diamondbacks lead the Padres by a half-game

Never look past anyone, once you think that you are that good, and all you have to do is showup, and throw the gloves out on the field, Bam there you go another win. I wished it was that easy. But that is why they play the game.

Robert Horry has to be my favorite player in the clutch. I've always been a follower of his since his Houston days with the Dream. I always thought he was a Scottie Pippen clone physically but I don't think he possessed the dribbling skills that Scottie had for their height.

The biggest clutch play he did was when he shot that 3 pointer at the buzzer when they beat Sac a few years back. That just rocked the house from LA to Tijuana, Man....

I was a Sacramento watching the game at a relatives house and you could just see the faces on these guys!! It was hilarious!

So the Dodgers just beat the Friars 4-2.

When is Bochy going to realize that Ojeda is their worst hitter, and putting him in the lineup only puts more pressure on their offense? Nady and Sweeney have come alive recently in regards to their hitting. And with Fick's clutch hitting and talented skill to call a game from behind the plate why change it up?

Fick should be catching all the time with Hernandez out... not playing first. That's where Sweeney needs to be.

I'm stoked that the Friars have been able to hold on to first with all the injuries. I just don't see any reason to change a formula that has proven to win games.

Am I crazy?

mattmc223
06-29-2005, 04:37 PM
I think that you're right. Ojeda has hit clutch like once or twice that I can remember but other than that is not very good. The arguement can be made that he is versatile and plays outfield but now that we have Fick, it really doesn't matter how many different positions Ojeda plays. I think I'm just tired about the inconsistency of some of our star players as well as May and Redding. I hope that we are able to fix this.

TrabucoWR
06-29-2005, 05:30 PM
Fick, Sweeney, and Damien Fackson have really stepped it up since Loretta, Nevin, and Hernandez went down. I just don't see any need to keep Ojeda around. Just keep Fick at catcher, and Sweeney at first. It's working fine. I really hope Loretta can come back soon though, I miss his consistent hitting.

This message board is to talk what ever is on our mind. I see messages that say the most various things unrelated to football. I am a die hard Charger and Padre fan. Obviously you are not from San Diego. Go Hoffman and Go Padres!

i know that post isnt directed to me, but he made that post when it was on the football section (joseph04 posted the same thread on 2 forums) and they got merged together, and just because he doesnt like padres or even baseball doesnt mean that hes not from san diego, when i was younger i liked the padres but was more of a giants and a's fan because i went to more games there (born here but have family up there who would take me to games).

Yes, most things that are off topic are actually posted or moved to the off topic portion of the message boards. As far as telling me to shut the hell up, that was just plain rude.

No, I am not from san Diego but keep in mind that the site is about Chargers football not the city of San Diego. While I certainly hope the team stays in San Diego because of what the teams adds to your community, I will not change allegiance simply because they move.

While topics such as city negotiations are not direct football talk, the topic is related to the team.

I'd second that.

All of us have terribly important off topic things to talk about.....doesnt mean we start 3 threads on the same topic and/or put them on the front page...WHICH IS RESERVED FOR CHARGERS FOOTBALL TALK.

But dont mind me....Im not from San Diego anyway.

Well then second this,

if we want to talk about Padres then we will. If I am on the Padres forum and see something cool about the bolts I will post it there or (vice versa). If you don't like it...THEN DON'T READ IT. I am sick and tired of people trying to dictate what we can talk about. It's all sports related from San Diego.. Hell I will even talk about the gulls if I was a hockey fan.

From a couple of comments ago, I apologize if I was rude because I got this thread from the "Padres, Gulls, etc talk" thread.........I DID NOT KNOW IT WAS MOVED FROM Charger Talk. So with that I say GO BOLTS and PADS!!!

I dont follow baseball until the end of the season, and have never been much of a baseball fan. I still grew up around the Padres (and the Cubs) and "root" for them every year.

Im not one to tell ANYONE that they cant say something....and I dont like others telling me what to say. I was just suggesting to post the off topic stuff in the "Misc" forums.

I dont know much about the make up of the Pads this year....I know the shortstop gets alot of coverage in the sports media....but it appears that they are doing very well this year. Heres a hearty "Go Padres" and I wish the best of luck to Mr Hoffman in his chances to make the All Star game.

Towers signed May to be the fifth starter, but he started to flame in ST, so Towers traded for Redding. Redding flamed as well during the season. So Towers sent two oops to NY for Quantrill. We owe Brian Cashman a debt of thanks! :D

I personally think that its funny how bad May and Redding did in New York. I looked at the box score the other day when the Yankees got pounded by someone like 17 to 3. I was amused to find that Redding was the one who messed it up giving up 6 runs in the first. I also thought that it was funny to find out that May also gave up 6 in the 2nd and 3rd innings. I didn't have a problem with May but he just was not very good in San Diego. Redding was a heck of a lot worse though and at least he's gone.

I'm looking for some tickets for the Padres-Cardinals game tomorrow (Thursday), and I've never been to Petco. Where is the best place to score good seats on short notice? Are there scalpers near the entrances, or is the box office the only option? I appreciate any help.

At Angels' stadium (near me) the scalpers usually have the best tickets available, better than the box office. Since I've never been to PetCo, are the scalpers outside on the street? Are there any cops around to hassle the "exchange"?

So, all they need is the League's approval. Chan Ho Park for Phil Nevin. Park is 8-5 with a 5.66 ERA in 20 starts this season. Nevin hit .256 with nine homers and 47 RBI this year. He probably will get a chance to be the regular designated hitter for Texas. So, who wins out in this trade?

Chan Ho will probably be the number 5 starter for us, behind Peavy, Williams, Eaton, and Lawrence. The guys is being payed oodles of money for pitching the 5 spot. He signed a deal for 5 years, $65 Million in 2002. The Rangers are paying for quite a bit of it.

Yea, I don't really like that trade at all. I agree that we need a pitcher but I also believe that we can get someone better than Park (his best numbers were in 2003) and his most recent numbers are quite horrible. I don't understand why Towers is so eager to unload Nevin (it really isn't Nevin's fault that we suck) for a crappy pitcher (one who makes $14 million out of the 5 spot for that matter). I guess time will tell and we'll see.

I'm starting this thread solely to discuss what the Padres should do regarding trades, free agency, drafting, call-ups, coaching, front office, etc.

So, I believe that the Pads should actually do a sign-and-trade this off-season with Giles slated to be an FA. Sign him, and trade him to the Braves for young star Jeff Francour. This kid is on Sportcenter every time I turn it on. He makes clutch hits, he has some pop, and he has a killer arm. This is the kind of guy you lock up for 7+ years. Hopefully, the Braves won't realize that, and talk trade for the kid.

Too bad the Trade Deadline is up. Maybe the Pads could've even sent Nevin and Giles to Atlanta for Franceour and their best pitching prospect.

Well somebody has to win the NL West so it might as well be the Padres. If we do lose in the playoffs then so be it, but all it takes is a hot streak and you can ride it all the way to the World Series. There's no pressure on the team that wins the NL West since that team would probably end up with a worse record than the wild card team. So if the Padres get knocked off in the NLDS then whatever but if they win and move on then everything else is gravy.

All a team wants is a shot at the playoffs and you can't win the championship if you're not in the playoffs. ;)

conman
08-19-2005, 01:17 PM
There's no way in hell the Padres can win a 7 game series against any NL playoff team. Our pitching staff consists of 1 reliable pitcher (Peavy)...with the rest of the starting pitching staff being totally unreliable. Combine that with the fact that you'll be going against the top 4 pitchers of an opponent in a 7 game series. And then don't forget the lack of offense the Padres have faced after the All-Star break.

Look what happened the last two games with Willis and Beckett. That's a look into the future of what the Padres will face possibly twice in a 7 game series.

The Padres have proven that they CAN win against the other divisional leaders, they just need to play to that level consistently. As of this posting, they are 5-0 against the Braves this season, with a chance to sweep the season series tonight, albeit against John Smoltz. But if they can beat Pedro Martinez, they can beat Smoltz. And Tuesday, they will have a chance to beat Clemens at PETCO Park.... I have a dental appointment that day, but even if my jaw is fully numb, i'm still gonna go down and see Peavy vs. Rocket. that's gonna be fuuuuuunnnn :D

As far as coaching...Keep Bochy. He's a great manager, and a lot of people are trying to make replacing him the answer...it's not. However, what I would do, is see if they can get a new batting coach. Sure, Magadan does what he can, but he never was much of a power hitter. They need someone in there to bring out the boys' power better...Klesko was a 30-HR guy til Magadan got in there...and Giles' HR dropped big time when he arrived...and as far as Burroughs, well...Magadan hasn't helped him much at all. He's in AAA now, as you may know.

Just one man's opinion :D

speedbump
08-24-2005, 01:22 PM
I agree about keeping Bochy...he's the man! I like Magadan, but I have to wonder about his job security following this offensively anemic season to date. However I don't think you can blame Mags for Klesko and Giles' lack of HRs...it's not like Petco is a bandbox for left-handed power guys.

I'm not sold on Nady being an everyday player, I wanted him to be, but the more I watch him swing the more I'm not yet convinced. The Pads need another quality starter and right-handed power in the batting order. Meanwhile I hope that Klesko and Giles can hit a few more dingers than they have this year.

The Padres may be the first team in MLB history to win their division with a losing record, which may make other teams look over them in the playoffs. I don't believe they are the caliber to go to the Series, but hey.....let's have some fun, who knows? Cinderella found a way to the ball, why not us?

I doubt that they will finish below .500. At worst .500 but I doubt it.

He did pitch tuesday, but lasted only 1 inning I believe. Hope he holds up because they can reduce their magic number by 4 if they win, and the giants lose.

How many pitches did he throw? If he threw over 50 there is no way he goes on friday.

The padres open a 3 game series against the D backs today while the Giants visit the Rockies in Denver. The magic number is 6 while it can diminsh with a padre win and/or Giant loss. Monday the padres need to step it up when the Giants come to Petco for a 4 game series, which will determine who will finally win the west. Go Padres!!!!!!!!!

You're right. He did get lit up. It'll be Astacio, Lawrence, then Woody.

We sweep AZ & its pretty much in the bag. Dodgers aren't going anywhere 9 back. And the Giants won't kep that win streak alive.

Rockies are in the spoiler position, and I hope they do just that against the giants. Rockies are leading 6-2 in the 7th last I checked.

With BLaw and Woody going? Not likely, but it would be nice. I don't remember the last time either of those guys had a quality start.

:D Padres need to get hot going into the playoffs. K. Greene is on fire and we need more Padres to follow. Beside not being consistent the Padres lack a power hitter. Go Padres

5 more games. We win tomorrow AZ is eliminated and if LA loses they are eliminated if not then if we win Sunday they are gone. Then the annoying giants will only have 1 game left if even that.

Hopefully the Giants start losing, Pads still have a four game homestand against them and I think they are four games behind :\
