I was kind of hoping to start a cool music thread where everyone could ask questions and share ideas with other music fans. I urge everyone to remain as "flame free" as possible and respect others tastes.
My first submission is this cool game (http://www.scenta.co.uk/gamescenta/site/whatsthatsong.cfm) which you can go to and put a name of a band or a singer into the search engine and see how many songs (out of 10) you can correctly name by that band. It is alot of fun to take turns doing with someone else, or all by yourself if you think of yourself as knowledgeable of a certain band and their music.
Let me know what you think.
This thread would also be cool for comments on new or favorite movies, books, video games...etc.
Feel free to post "top ten album lists", suggestions of good movies, release dates.....you get the idea.
Sounds like it is a big "no-no" to discuss file sharing so please dont post about that.

Okay, I did it with R.E.M. and got 10/10 - if I missed one I would have been ashamed of myself.
And I think their last album sucked. :D

I am pretty good at it, but havent had alot of 10 out of 10s. Before I realised that you could type in your own artists I got The Eagles randomly and I got all of their songs (10 out of 10)....and Ive never owned an Eagles album in my life.
I respect the fact that you could do it with a band like REM which actually has alot of albums. My girlfriend is really good at this but she doesnt listen to many bands that have more than 2 albums out...so...
Here are a few bands I have managed to get 10 out of 10 so far:
Blind Melon
Led Zeppelin
Modest Mouse
Dead Prez
Pearl Jam
Sublime
And I have played it alot! Nothing like finding out you know less than you thought.

You guys and your choice of bands are really making me feel old - I am old, just don't like to feel old. Although I like some of the current music, my expertise goes back to the "real" musicians - Otis Redding, James Brown, Beach Boys, Lovin' Spoonful, etc. - you guys probably haven't heard of any of them. At least I have heard of Blind Melon ( lead singer killed himself, didn't he?), Better than Ezra, and others.
I have a question for you young guys - If today's artists are so damn good, why are they always ripping off riffs from old school songs?

I missed this post the first time around....sorry about that Denver!
I am 29 years old and I can say that I like alot of music by James Brown, Otis Redding, Beach Boys, and a BUNCH of music of all types before and after my time.
Jimi Hendrix used to play guitar for James Brown - Brian Wilson from the Beach Boys went crazy and became a shut in for years, while back in the day, the drummer for the Beach Boys (Mike Love?) was a good friend of Charles Manson. Otis Redding wrote "Hard to Handle" and "Sittin on the Dock of the Bay" - Lovin Spoonful' was named after.....well nevermind!
The lead singer for Blind Melon (Shannon Hoon) did "kill himself", in that he overdosed on coacaine.
The good news is that there is a great bunch of independant bands that have a real stripped down sound that is comparable to the old sound. Hopefully those bands become a little more prevelant in the current scene that seems to be full of 16 year old white girls!
As a fan of the older sound, I would suggest bands like Blind Melon, Black Crowes, Pearl Jam, Modest Mouse, Califone, and there is a great band out now called "The Shins" that have a great sound that reminds me ALOT of the Beach Boys. Their album "Oh, Inverted World" could be Pet Sounds part 2 if you closed your eyes and didnt know better!
EDIT- As for the last question in your post.....I cant fault you much because of your choice of very original artists that you named, but music has been "ripped off" since the days of powdered wigs and concertos.
The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix....etc- all ripped off guys like Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, and Mississippi John Hurt. Jimi also ripped off Bob Dylan....who ripped off Woody Guthrie....who was ripping off songs from train tramps and share croppers. Heck, even the King of Rock n Roll ( it always hurts me to call Elvis by that name) was ripping off the Black Music of the time and being successful because then the white audiences would be able to listen to it......(Eminem) :)

Igor - some great points. Especially the one about the old timers doing some ripoff material. I guess good music is like good comedy. If it's good, everyone wants to use it.
P.S. I got to see Jimi Hendrix live at my college circa 1968/69. My kids are all jealous. Hendrix blew everyone away during "Purple Haze" when he sang the line "'scuse me, while I kiss the sky" as "'scuse me, while I kiss this guy" and kissed his drummer on the cheek.
Another great concert at my college (Regis), was Arlo Guthrie. Put on quite a show.

denverboltfan,
Rock music is one of my passions, so being a lad of 30, I am well-versed in your era. I probably don't have them dissected and analyzed like you guys do though.
Interesting how Woody Guthrie wrote "This Land is Your Land" with socialist undertones and we used to sing the "censored" version in grade school.

Same school but different. When I went to college (1966-1970), Regis was still a college (and shep was still a pup). It has since opened several branches and become a university. The actual main campus is at 50th and Lowell Blvd. in Denver.

Im not as familiar with Arlo as I am with Woody, but I do enjoy that kind of music quite a bit. I have never really been a country music fan, but I can listen to alot of folk inspired country-sounding music.
One guy who fits that mold that I have been listening to for a while is Steve Earle. He is obviously influenced by the Guthries and personal friends of the Guthrie family. Steve Earle's songs "Dead Man Walking", Valentines Day, Tom Ames Prayer, Copperhead Road, Dixieland, and Billy Austin are some of the best songs ever....and if you and Dan like the Guthries, I would reccommend him.
Denver- I would honestly give a part of myself that is historically "special" to a man- to have seen Hendrix live....it would be like being on the moon and witnessing the moon landing and the space walk. Hendrix is the best guitarist that has lived to this point...in my opinion!
Dan- I too had to sing "This land is your land" in school, as well as "The House of the Rising Sun" and "Joy to the World".....of course the censored versions, or without any back story from the music teacher. As for your musical knowledge, I dont claim to know any more than anyone else....I just know the bands I know. I couldnt get 10 out of 10 with REM on that game, I guarantee!

I am with you on that Pretzel....only I am an old guy, so I go back even farther than the 90s.
LTfan and Pretzel.....I would suggest these artists/albums to you guys based on what you say you like.
Dead Prez - Let's Get Free
Paris - Sonic Jihad or Sleeping with the Enemy
Jedi Mind Tricks - Anything by them is good...Visions of Gandhi is my favorite album by them though.
RZA- Bobby Digital ( if you like WuTang)
Immortal Technique - Anything by Immortal Technique is great...he started off in the New York battle rap circuit and he came in second place the first year to Eyedea...he won it all the next year. His rap has maintained the "battle" stylem, but his subjects have become political....he says some things that not everybody "wants to hear!"
Here is a link to www.guerrillafunk.com that site is great...I think it is mainly run by Paris. Paris has been around for years and is a great rapper and producer who is currently producing Public Enemy's new album. I didnt suggest PE because they are a little old...but you should be familiar with them because they might be the most influencial rap group OF ALL TIME......their new album will have Paris and Dead Prez on it too.

The "gangster" aspect is definately there. The terminology is the same in the old mobster. The new urban culture didnt invent "yo", "pop a cap", or the drive by shooting. Baggy clothes, having a posse, and big luxury cars? Sounds like the Rat Pack to me.
Listen to Sinatra and then listen to any of the other popular music of the day...who was singing and who was "rapping"? Frank and Dean Martin definately had some songs that were spoken more than sang (sung?).
"The Lady is a Tramp"? Cmon, that is "gangster rap" through and through! :)

The only bands I even recognize on that list are Lovin Spoonful and Moby Grape! I have found that they dont have the rights to the Beatles catalog, but alot of bands are available. I have found many obscure bands on there, but the problem is that if you were to look for the band "Heart" you would get alot of bands with the word "heart" in the title. Just like Denver got Moby (who isnt a group as much as it is a little bald vegetarian who is literally a "record player" player. :D ) when he typed in Moby Grape.

This is a Great Site (http://www.songmeanings.net/) for finding lyrics to songs.
They have alot of older bands like the Beatles and Led Zeppelin, they have rap artists, indie bands, and everything in between.
Another cool feature on this site is that people can put down comments on the songs (after the lyrics) as to what they believe the song is trying to say.
Some of those blurbs are actually really cool.....but there are alot of music snobs and catty comments too.
It is still worth a look and very useful as a reference tool.
:Bolt: Check this out http://www.prefixmag.com/Bright_Eyes_(Leno)(05.02.05)_(high).php
For those of you who missed it on Leno, it is the singer from Bright Eyes (or he is called Bright Eyes) doing a song that was a little ballsy to have on the air. I appologize if you dont agree with his politics, but since we were talking about Bob Dylan and Arlo and Woodie Guthrie earlier, I think you guys might like it on the sound and style alone.
I have heard other songs by Bright Eyes and none of them that I have heard before sound anything like this one. I give the kid props for making his voice heard and by doing it in a creative and entertaining way!

I enjoyed the Bright Eyes song very much. Don't think it's on Haliburton's favorite play list, but it cuts right to the chase. By the way, for those who think that a song like this means that the singer (ala the Dixie Chicks) is some kind of traitor, you are dead wrong. Just like the people who think that those who don't support the war don't support the troops. Some of us just don't think that any more of our kids need to die in some other country's civil war where you can't tell the good guys from the bad guys. Brings back shades of another conflict in the 70's. Just my opinion.
May God bless and protect all of our troops, wherever they are.

With God on Our Side
Bob Dylan 1961
Oh my name it is nothin'
My age it means less
The country I come from
Is called the Midwest
I's taught and brought up there
The laws to abide
And that land that I live in
Has God on its side.
Oh the history books tell it
They tell it so well
The cavalries charged
The Indians fell
The cavalries charged
The Indians died
Oh the country was young
With God on its side.
Oh the Spanish-American
War had its day
And the Civil War too
Was soon laid away
And the names of the heroes
I's made to memorize
With guns in their hands
And God on their side.
Oh the First World War, boys
It closed out its fate
The reason for fighting
I never got straight
But I learned to accept it
Accept it with pride
For you don't count the dead
When God's on your side.
When the Second World War
Came to an end
We forgave the Germans
And we were friends
Though they murdered six million
In the ovens they fried
The Germans now too
Have God on their side.
I've learned to hate Russians
All through my whole life
If another war starts
It's them we must fight
To hate them and fear them
To run and to hide
And accept it all bravely
With God on my side.
But now we got weapons
Of the chemical dust
If fire them we're forced to
Then fire them we must
One push of the button
And a shot the world wide
And you never ask questions
When God's on your side.
In a many dark hour
I've been thinkin' about this
That Jesus Christ
Was betrayed by a kiss
But I can't think for you
You'll have to decide
Whether Judas Iscariot
Had God on his side.
So now as I'm leavin'
I'm weary as Hell
The confusion I'm feelin'
Ain't no tongue can tell
The words fill my head
And fall to the floor
If God's on our side
He'll stop the next war.
The more things change........the more they never change ;)

Death-Metal Rules! All of you need to listen to Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse, Hate Eternal & Nile to name a few because they slay your bands to pieces! You all should listen to kick-ass Punk like D.R.I., Dead Kennedys, Sex Pistols, Ramones, Black Flag, etc. Also KROQ slays your ****, especially classic Alternative like Depeche Mode, The Cure, Adam Ant. 9" Nails, Ministry, Sisters Of Mercy also slay your ****! Classic Metal like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Jimi Hendrix is also cool. The Beatles are also awesome, not Metal, but great anyway. Classic Speed-Metal bands like Slayer, Venom, Destruction, Kreator & early Metallica also kills your ****!!!! Napalm Death also rules!!!! So many great bands that'll slay every band others have posted on this thread. AAARRRGGGHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with the Punk bands you named, but I dont know about the Death Metal bands you named! Well, actually I do know about most of them.....I have just never been a big fan of that style.
I think The Cure is one of the worst bands EVER, but if you listen to the Cure and Venom in the same day you have to be a very colorful human being!

They have their 2 videos up right now. "Float On" and "The Ocean Breathes Salty" in addition to an interview available for your viewing pleasure.
Modest Mouse has been my favorite band for about 5 years now. The Rap and Metal types probably wouldnt like it, but anyone else who likes good music should like Modest Mouse!
Here is a link (http://www.regenerationtv.com/02_music/music_live.html) to another Modest Mouse video and if you scroll down there is a good Rage Against the Machine video as well.

Modest Mouse are awesome! The Edge & The Zone are the 2 Alternative stations in Phoenix & they both play MM. I listen to The Zone in the morning for Howard Stern & then I switch to The Edge. The Edge is better musicwise than The Zone because they mix up the old & the new & they also play deeper cuts & they also don't talk over the music & let the songs finish completely. Anyway, I love "The World At Large". That's a great song! I've heard some older stuff from MM that was also pretty good.

I lived in Kingman AZ for 4 horrible months back in 1999 and I remember the Zone and a great classic rock station out of Vegas. I had never heard radio like that before. Actual good songs on the radio...and not just the same ones over and over!
It was 2000 before western Montana had a radio station that would play "metal" or non-top-40 alternative music. Now there are 2 good ones in the area, but I am so old that alot of the music I like (Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Black Crowes, Faith No More,...etc are ALL considered "classic rock" and I hear them on all of the regular stations now.....it is cool, but it must mean that I am pretty old!
As for Modest Mouse.....if you like (or "love" as you said) "World at Large" off of the new album, I would honestly say that you could pretty much buy any Modest Mouse album and enjoy it. The new album is one of my least favorites, and I consider all of the other one's better.....although I listen to every song on the new album and enjoy it.
"Building Nothing out of Something" and "Moon and Antarctica" would be the albums I would suggest you check out if you can....although I first heard "Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About" and that is how I came to "love" their music.
"Lonesome Crowded West" is the favorite MM album of 2 of my friends....and while they are wrong about alot of things.....music isnt usually one of them.
I guess I could have just said "Check em out...you cant go wrong!"
I just think that someone with your wide and varied musical palate would appreciate good music of any kind.....and if you can get past Robert Smith's (The Cure) voice, Isaac from Modest Mouse should be no problem at all!

Although I haven't heard alot of their songs, they're a pretty good band. I didn't know they'd been around since the mid-90's, until I heard some of their older stuff & it's pretty good. The Cure are awesome! Robert Smith is a kick-ass singer & guitarist. Death-Metal is by far the best style of music, though. The heavy distortion, deep & growling vocals & the blast-beats from Hell. Sheer speed at it's fastest. It takes the speed of Punk & the heaviness of Metal to new areas. Anyway, I have a wide-range of tastes. B-52's, Duran Duran, The Go-Go's, The Pixies, Suicidal Tendencies, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Suffocation, Carcass, Death, Deicide, Vehemence, Terrorizer. Damn, I love naming bands I like. So many of them. Anyway, the worst crap is the 80's Hair-Metal bands. That's the lamest **** of all. I didn't know of Modest Mouse because The Edge sucked in the 90's. They didn't become good until last yr. They were a repetitive station that didn't play any Alt-Rock older than Jane's Addiction. The Zone at that time wasn't any better. They were heavily playing The Dave Matthews Band & the like. I grew up on KROQ, which is out of L.A. & they're the the true Alt-Rock station. You must be around my age or older than me, since you said you're old. I'm 34. I lived in SoCal until I moved here in '95, so I noticed how bad radio was for Alt-Rock back then. The Edge now plays older ****, but I miss KROQ. Anyway, did you ever get into **** like Sonic Youth? They've been around since '83 & are cutting-edge. If you never got into them, check out the CD "Goo". You'll dig that 1. I'm gonna check out MM's older stuff. Anyway, show your friends "A Clockwork Orange" & check out some Death-Metal & Punk bands.

My friends and I are well-schooled in "the Ultraviolence"!
I'm sure I listen to some Death Metal...but I really cant think of many bands outside of Slayer. Alot of the other bands like Otep, Arch Angel, Sepultura, Pantera....I dont think would probably be considered Death Metal, but I listen to alot of that kind of music.
As for punk, I am a fan of the older stuff like you mentioned. Black Flag, Minor Threat, Misfits, Bad Brains, Minutemen, Flipper. I mainly follow the DC area punk bands of the late 70's and the socal punk bands of the early 80's.
I know I owned Goo by Sonic Youth around 94-95, but I dont know what happened to it. I never could really get into Sonic Youth, but I respect them for being the pioneers that they are. I hear alot of similarities between Sonic Youth and Fugazi......and Fugazi is one of my favorite bands. It is kind of like Modest Mouse and The Pixies....They have alot of similarities and I love Modest Mouse, but I cant listen to very much by the Pixies.
I am 29, which isnt THAT old....but like I said in my earlier post- when you hear the music you listened to in high school on "Classic Rock" radio....you feel a little old!

Speaking of 80's SoCal Punk: Circle Jerks, Suicidal Tendencies, Excel, Germs, Adolescents, Black Flag are awesome. Other old stuff like Dr. Know, Agnostic Front, M.D.C., Septic Death, Christ On Parade, early C.O.C. was great as well. C.O.C. is nothing like they were now. They got really slow & boring.
Ministry....Jesus Built My Hot Rod. Gotta love it!

Being a bit hard of hearing I turned on the "English subtitles for the hearing impaired" and having viewed the lyrics to the RAP version of "TAKE THIS JOB AND SHOVE IT" I will never again hear the C&W version of that song without thinking of this movie. ;)

Im glad you liked Office Space, it is one of my favorite movies. I'm not usually a big Jennifer Anniston fan, but I agree that she is hot in that movie.
I liked the "Michale Bolton" character and how he really got into his rap music. I think that demonstrates perfectly how many different kinds of people can relate to hip hop and have it actually apply to their lives while not being the stereotypical demographic.
Anchorman and Napolean Dynamite are a couple of other great comedies that I have watched recently. I find laughter to be the best medicine......although the lady at the clinic says I need a few shots of pennicillan to clear up my rash....

White Album -- The BeatlesThe Stray Cats cover of 'I Fought The Law' is on 'Runaway Boys: A Retrospective '81-'92'. That CD came out in '96 & their cover was previously unreleased. I guess the thing that turned me off to spoken-word albums is that there's no music. I buy albums for the music, not the words. I'll buy a book if I wanted words. I don't care if bands sing about God, Satan, murder, or planting a garden, if the music's great, that's why I'll buy a particular album. However, I love comedy. I listen to Howard Stern & I love Cheech & Chong, so I'll eventually check out Henry's spoken-word stuff, because he's pretty funny in the spoken-word clips I've seen & it's very plain to know that spoken-word albums don't contain music. BTW, you have a good taste in music & I own 3 albums you named on your 'Out Of Order Top 10 List'. 'The White Album' is awesome & so is '40 Oz. To Freedom'. 'Undertow' is also damn good. BTW, the 1st album I ever owned was Stray Cats-'Built For Speed'.

Stray Cats "Built for Speed" was my first album (tape) too! that is quite a coincedence!
Now that Wyatt Earp (Tell em' Hell is comin with me!) mentioned it, I do remember the Mike Ness version of "I Fought the Law". It was either on "Cheating at Solitaire" or "Mommy's Little Monster". I still have never heard the Stray Cats version, but I have to admit that Montana is not famous for their "well stocked" music stores.
Earp had a great list too...Besides the Pogues and the local (SD) band I have quite a bit of music by the other bands. The Misfits and Black Flag could have easily made my list.....but with only 10 choices I had to leave out ALOT of bands. I pretty much like everything the bands I had on my list have done, and just chose my favorite out of all of their albums.

I ordered the 'Runaway Boys' CD when I was a BMG member. BTW, it's quite a coincedence that 'Built For Speed' was also your 1st album or tape. Cool!

3.The sex pistols-never mind the bollocks
4.black flag-damaged
5.the meteors-wrecking crew
6.the exploited-troops of tomorrow

8.madness-one step beyond
9.led Zepelin-houses of the holy
10.dead kennedys-holliday in cambodia
11.the beatles-white album
these albums were my fav at one point or another in my life, yeah i got into that "rock a billy" thang for awhile way back when,Other bands that had that sound were The Blasters,The Meteors,The Pole Cats,The Penatrators, the raw kats,etc...reading your posts brings to mind bands i havent thought about in a few years. and that my friends is KOOL :D

Haha! Anyway, I remember really liking the song, "Make A Circuit With Me" by the Polecats when I 1st heard it in '83. That's a cool song. I remember seeing a Blasters video back then, but I don't remember the song title or how it sounds. I just remember liking it. I'll always be into The Stray Cats. Were you ever into The Reverend Horton Heat? They're called 'Psychobilly', for their fast, up-tempo style of Rockabilly. Their 90's stuff was pretty kick-ass. The Exploited are awesome!

Yeah thats why I liked THE METEORS, and the CRAMPS, they fit that psychobilly sound. I liked that music growing up...
about DEATH METAL I think Slip Knot are pretty Kool, now I have a 13 year old son that tells me whats Kool.. He's into this band called COHEED AND CAMBRIA...
I like their music also, but you start feeling old when your kids are tellin you whats Kool and whats not. :D
I've never heard a song by The Meteors, but The Cramps are great! I like Slipknot, but they aren't Death-Metal. Morbid Angel, Deicide, Cannibal Corpse, Hate Eternal & Nile are. Check out those bands. I dont have a clue who the Meteors are, but i do know that the Cramps are a punk band. I actually have one of their albums and it isnt too bad.
Speaking of the Beach Boys though.... Have any of you seen the documentary about big wave surfing called "Riding Giants"?
I just rented it because it is directed and narrated by Stacey Peralta (Dogtown and Z Boys) an I am a fan of his work. I tried surfing one time at Mission Beach, but since I am a fish belly white Montana boy with no swimming skills I just stuck to boogie boarding. Since I didnt grow up around much surfing I wasnt expecting to enjoy the movie that much, but it was great and I highly reccommend it.

I think the last part of Englebert's name is also a slang term for male genitalia and a racial slur....so it is automatically censored. It used to also words like "assessment" because it had a synonym for Butt in it. It is still a work in progress Im sure.
On the Beach Boys subject (again) I heard a cool song by a band called the Barenaked Ladies and the song is called "Brian Wilson". For those of you who are familiar with Brian Wilson's "more interesting" years.....it is a very cool song.

Yeah, Cannibal Corpse's lyrics would be downright offensive....if I could understand them. :D
My token "offensive" band for the day, is GG Allin and the Murder Junkies. The music isnt really all that great (ok it is really bad 90% of the time) but some of his songs are good and his live performances are not to be missed. Unfortunately GG overdosed on heroin before he could follow out his "master plan"....but the beauty of his music lives on....check him out if you get the chance!

There is a show on MTV 2 called Wonder Showzen..... I was wondering if anyone here has seen it yet and if there are any fans of the show around.
It is like a Sesame Street parody for adults and has to be seen to be believed.
It is probably the funniest thing on TV right now.
Im not sure when it comes on MTV 2 but if you have that channel you should keep an eye out for that show.....it is highly recommended and unlike anything you have ever seen.

Is GG Allin fast? Lyrics are for books.
Not nearly as fast as Cannibal Corpse, but as fast as most Venom songs I would say. He is more of a punk singer than a metal singer....but there isnt any real classification for GG.
Hitler just wanted to be a painter and Charles Manson just wanted to write acoustic songs and sing them......I am glad GG had an outlet for his "art" so that the world didnt have to suffer any more than it already is!
Get the DVD "Hated" and rent the movie "Gummo" on the same night and tell me that those things arent scarier than Cannibal Corpse and Candyman!
Makes me shudder just thinking about it!
Speaking of fast music though.....have you ever heard Bad Brains first album? (Yellow background with picture of the capital building and a lightning bolt AKA "The Roir sessions")
"The Best punk/hardcore album of all time"- Adam Yauch, Beastie Boys
It is the fastest thing that I listen to and REALLY enjoy....since you seem to be a punk fan as well, Im sure you could tolerate them and Im guessing you might enjoy them. It is strange to me that some of the best punk music of all time came from 4 black guys in 1982. Talk about being pioneers in music on many different levels!
Since you are aware of Black Flag and Henry Rollins, I will share this quick story:
When Henry was growing up (teenage years), he and Ian Mackaye (Minor Threat, Fugazi) used to skateboard and "straight edge" around the DC area. Eventually Ian got a name for himself in the DC punk scene and Henry was always around him at that time.
Henry and Ian ventured to the REALLY bad part of DC which is known as the Adams Morgan District and would catch punk shows at a place called Madame's Organ (Adams Morgan - Madame's Organ....) where Bad Brains were playing quite a bit at the time.
Bad Brains started out with a real positive stance and the DC scene itself began using acronyms like PMA (positive mental attitude) and DIY (do it yourself) as the motto of their movement. Bad Brains used to invoke the "PMA experience" heavily at their shows and during one of their Very fast and Very cool/positive songs called "Supertouch" he was said to have fully jumped on Henry Rollins and put his hands on his face (picture the movie "The Crow") while singing the song and staring into Henry's young 16 year old eyes.
Henry started his first band, SOA, not long after.
"Some people look at me and talk about me like a clown/ They just dont realize it;s my simple way to get down/ Ive got that supertouch/ Chances are Ive got too much/
Ive come to let you see/that you also can be free/It seem like everytime we all go underground/ The stinkin troopers them they think we fool around/ We have had about enough/ Now were gonna get real tough/
It happens everyday....thats why we got PMA"

I know it was rereleased in 96, but I had problems getting it on CD in 2002. All we have for music stores in my town are your average "corporate" music stores. You wont be able to find any good albums there, but they have 20 copies of the newest Britney Spears album....etc.
If you live in a place with specialty music stores, or if you know your way around the internet, you should be able to find it still.
I was a big fan of Living Colour's first album "Vivid", and I owned their 2nd album (Stain?) with the song "Type" on it....but I dont remember ever hearing them cover Sailin' On. I have, however, heard No Doubt cover Sailin On on a compilation album callled MOM (it benefited ocean conservation).....even though it was back when No Doubt were more of a ska band and when they were trying to play ACTUAL music, it was still a relatively pathetic version of that song.
I recorded Living Colour's cover of 'Sailin' On' on 'Headbanger's Ball' about 14 yrs. ago. I love 'Type', even though I haven't heard in yrs. I also recorded that video on 'Headbanger's Ball'. I've heard the song Gwen Stefani did with Sublime a few times. In fact, I heard it last week on The Edge. I really like that song & I like No Doubt. However, they've really gone to Hell & Gwen's sold-out to R&B. Ugh!

I havent heard a No Doubt/ Gwen Steffani song that actually has REAL instruments in it for about 5 years now. I never really liked No Doubt, but their early "Spiderwebs" and "Just a Girl" era stuff was at least recognizeable as A BAND.....fast forward to the last couple of albums, and all you have is a squeaky chick and a drum machine overproduced into bad dance music.
I didnt mind the song they did with Brad (Total Hate 95 or something like that) and I LOVE the version of "Saw Red" that Gwen did with Sublime on "Robbin the Hood".
I still have the video for "Type" by Living Colour that I recorded about 14 years ago too. Vernon Reid, the guitarist for Living Colour, is one of the most underated musicians I have ever seen. He was equal parts Hendrix/Tom Morello (Rage ATM), with his music and his politics coming together to make something beautiful yet thought provoking. I wonder what he is doing nowadays?

I found the Shins "New Slang" video very intriguing and liked it alot. Don't know how much Beach Boys I noticed, but I found the music and the video very well done. I need to play it a few more times, because I didn't get all the lyrics. I think it reminded me more of Simon and Garfunkel than it did of the Beach Boys.

I really like the Irish folk/punk music of the Pogues, and really like Flogging Molly from Ireland, and from the U.S. The DropKick Murphy's and the Mobtown Hooligans, their Kinda have that brittish OI! S :D ound

My computer went down for a week or so and I had to get a new one. It was my first computer, so I havent had to go without one since I bought the last one. The Chargers forum (and this thread) was the thing I missed the most.
Denver- I never thought of the Simon and Garfunkel link, but now that you mention it I can see how The Shins sound like them in their slower songs.
There was a movie that came out a while ago called "Garden State" that had a couple of Shins songs on the soundtrack. There was also a song by a band called Iron and Wine. It is usually just a guy and his guitar and his wife sings backup. They really have a Simon and Garfunkel vibe. I always forget whether the song is called The Sound of Silence, or the Sounds of Silence, but I am often reminded of that song in particular when listening to Iron and Wine.
Bobo- I dont think I actually caught the Faith No More performance the night of the actual show, but I do think I have seen the performance that you are speaking of.......I believe Mike Patton reenacted the "fish out of water" scene from the end of the video, if memory serves me correctly. I used to have a Faith No More VHS tape called "Live at the Brixton Academy in London....You Fat B**tards". It was all but one song off their album "The Real Thing", and "As the Worm Turns" and "We Care Alot" from earlier albums. If there is anyway to check that video out, I would highly reccommend it to you! I am still looking for another copy of it since my original got eaten a few years back.
Wyatt- I really enjoy Flogging Molly and I love Dropkick Murpys....especially their early stuff with the original singer. Their album Do or Die has alot of GREAT stuff on it. "Boys on the Docks", "Barroom Hero", "Caught in a Jar", Faraway Coast", "Finnegans Wake" all should get a good listen once a week at least!

I taped another video on HBB from the same show, when Mike Patton says the song is very sad & acts like he's crying. I don't remember the song, but the crying part is funny as Hell! I admire your collection of music Bobo.....collecting it in the first place is a task, but keeping it all these years (I know how those 15 year old recorded VHS tapes can be!) is another thing all together.
The Brixton Faith No More concert did have Mike Patton in the british cop (bobbie?) hat. He also wore a cool skull mask while he sang "As the Worm Turns", and he broke into "The Right Stuff" by the New Kids on the Block and "Pump up the Jam" by Technotronic at random parts of a couple of songs. Mike Patton has always been......"unique".
All this talking about "Live at the Brixton Acadamy...You Fat B**tards" has me thinking I should see if it is on Ebay.....it is just to cool to not own it.
UFOz8MyGoat-- I just had to say that Aldo Nova was not a "one hit wonder"...he had a hit with "Blood on the Bricks" around 1992, and he produced Bon Jovi's New Jersey album ;) .
As for the Diamond Rio.....I have always liked that song for some odd reason. Oh yeah....I grew up in Montana! Even if you hate country music, you will still hear it 3 times a day regardless.
Audioslave is always cool.

Any Ben Harper fans in the house? A buddy of mine landed me a ticket to his show in Missoula on the 8th. I have liked Ben Harper for years, but only seriously for about 5 of those years. To be able to see him in such a small venue (970 capacity) will be great
Most of the time it is a pain in the butt getting tickets to a decent concert in Montana....but there are also times like these that make it that much better.
Here is the official Ben Harper website....lots of cool stuff and info there.

i like ben harper, not like hardcore about him or anything but i enjoy listening to his music. i havent been to any of his shows but i hear that they can be either really cool if he has a bunch of other people with him or boring if he doesnt cause hell just sit and play and not get into like he normally does.
I recorded lots of videos from HBB, 120 Min., Alt. Nation & Superock back in the day. That was my thing to do back then. Even though it's been yrs. since I've sat down & watched my tapes, I'm glad I've got them. Anyway, what's the name of Husker Du's 1st album? I heard it's very fast. I want that album as well as Bad Brains' 1st 1. I got Nile's new 1 today. Don't know if you're a big Death-Metal fan like me, but I think you'd get into Nile.
I know music is the main topic, but I finally saw 'Revenge Of The Sith' today & it's excellent!

The Countdown continues on the Ben Harper concert and everything is in order. I was glad to hear you are a bit of a Ben fan Bubba. Im not a freak about him either, but there are about 10 of his songs that I love and I know by heart. I dont enjoy all of his songs, but I think that you can find a song of his that you really like....doent matter age, race, musical preference, or political stance, you can find a good Ben Harper song if you try!
Bobo, I too have old ( make that OLD) video tapes that I recorded videos on. I grew up with 2 channels until I was in high school. When I would go down to Ramona for summers my mom had cable and I would always try and fill up a tape or 2 with the best videos I could find.....and then I would watch them everyday when I got back to Montana and my two tv stations.
When I got into high school my dad and I moved into a house that still had one of those BIG satellite dishes in the front yard. The thing barely worked, but we got most of the affiliates (at random times) and always had Fox, a Sports channel, all the NBA games you could watch (also random) and every religious channel known to man......we also got the Canadian version of MTV called Muchmusic. MTV was still kind of cool back then (Headbangers Ball as you said), but Muchmusic was awesome. They played alot of great music and didnt censor the videos much at all. It was almost all music videos (not game shows and reality shows) and I saw Rage Against the Machine videos that had "the F word", Alicia Silverstone's middle finger in "Crazy" by Aerosmith, the weed leaf logo on Snoop Doggs hat, and uncensored videos of "18 and Life", "Welcome to the Jungle", and "Living in Sin" to name a few.
Strange that the Canadian youth gets to experience raw art, yet you cant even say "gun" in an MTV video....just a little "freedom observation" in honor of the 4th of July!!
I dont know the name of Husker Du's first album, so I cant be of any help to you at this time. I had a good friend and fellow bartender who was hooked on Bob Gould, but was more into his solo stuff....he is where I was exposed to Husker and Bob. I never really caught any names of songs or albums, but was impressed by what I heard. I dont remember being conscious of their speed, but thought they were talented musicians.....I might not have heard the first album though either.
I lost over 1700 mp3s off of my computer when it went down.....and didnt have alot of them backed up.... Every day now I want to hear something and then realize I dont own it anymore. Always make copies!
I saw Revenge of the Sith also. I thought it was easily the best of the "new trilogy".
I kinda miss recording videos. Anyway, I looked up Husker Du's catalog & their debut's called 'Land Record Speed'. I've heard a few of their songs & have recorded videos by them on 120 Min., but I've never heard anything fast by them. 2 friends have told me that their debut is the fastest Punk album ever. I'll have to be the judge of that & I hope to find it instead of ordering it. Either way, it'll be mine.

If you like Husker Du at high speed, their CD- Warehouse: Songs and Stories rips. Released in the mid-ish 80's with about 20 fuzz guitar punk songs, nothing slow about. Candy Apple Red -I think that's the name of it- is supposed to be good too.
I'll have to check those out as well. Thanks for the info.

The Ben Harper concert was last night in Missoula MT, and it was a great time.
The venue where they played had a capacity of less than a thousand people. It was an all ages show, but adults were offered various types of liquid refreshment if they had proof of age.
The opening "band" was a guy named Tom Freund who used to collaborate with Ben back in the early days of Ben's (signed) career. His first couple of songs were just him singing and playing a stand up bass....it was really cool and a pleasant surprise since I didnt know anything about the guy. All of Tom's set was songs composed of him singing and playing an instrument. If you know who Jack Johnson is, I could best describe him as a cross between Jack Johnson and Bob Dylan.
Ben Harper's show was great and the crowd was really into it. Within the first 5 minutes of Ben's set the place began to smell like the back of Snoop Dogg's limo....the security guards werent tolerating the tokers, but there were just too many to do anything about it really.
Ben had 2 drummers, a bass player, a guitar player, a guy on keyboards, and of course Ben plays guitar the whole time as well. He did alot of slide, as he always does, and was really impressed to see/hear it live.
My friends and I got there 2 hours early and were able to be within the first 2 to 4 rows (standing). I spent most of the show in the 3rd row.
After the show, alot of the band members hung around to sign things and shake hands. I met the keyboard guy and one of the drummers (the one that plays the hand drums......listen to the intro to "Burn One Down" and that is him.) Many of my friends got autographs, but I was just content to meet them and shake their hand.
Ben was cool too, but I would have had to endure the throng of screaming chicks to get to him....and I had endured enough of that in the first couple of rows throughout the show.
I really wanted to get a chance to tell the opening guy, Tom Freund, what a good job he did....but didnt see him at all after the show.
It was really a great show and I would sugest that any and all Ben Harper fans check him out in concert if you get the chance. He is only doing small venues right now so now is a great time to check him out!
EDIT-- Yesterday was a hot one.....over 90 degrees in Montana....I took that into consideration and also the fact that Ben Harper is a California native (Inland Empire) to break in my powder blue Gates jersey. Even in the midst of 1000 hippies and tokers I represent the Chargers hard.

Here is a picture from the Ben Harper show in Missoula. This was taken at the end of the show right after the 2nd encore.
If you look at the bald spot on the band member on the far right...and then look to the right a little bit, you will see a little bit of white - that is my hat.
It's too bad that they didnt get a better shot with me in it because I was wearing my powder blue Gates jersey that day!

There were actually only 970 seats in that place! It was really close and in your face....and the acoustics in the Wilma are great. I have seen a few Pink Floyd laser light shows and a Henry Rollins spoken word show there before, but usually the University hosts the concerts that come to Missoula. I have seen alot of shows at various spots around the U of M campus.
The Wilma has had alot of Hip Hop shows the past few years....Too Short, Bone, Spice One, and Andre Nikatina have played there recently and 50 Cent will be there within the month I believe. I havent caught any of those shows, but it seems that they blazed the trail for concerts there. I think that besides Ben Harper, the last rock show there was (I cant remember their name....starts with a V maybe, and they sing "Blister in the Sun") and that was last Halloween.
I just scored tickets to a Pearl Jam show in Missoula next month. They will be there to support the campaign of Tester to the Senate (I believe). Tester is from Big Sandy and so is Jeff Ament (the bass player from Pearl Jam) so they are doing a fund raiser type concert to help Tester's campaign.
Pearl Jam help out alot of Missoula charities and organizations. When I lived in Missoula last, Pearl Jam had a skate park built (in conjunction with the YMCA) and both of my roommates worked at the skatepark.....so you could say that Pearl Jam helped pay my rent at one time. It seems kind of trivial until you realize the last time somone introduced some worthwhile jobs that made a difference in your life in your community. It is actually less common than most would think!
The Pearl Jam concert will probably be in the Adams Field House, where the Grizzlies play basketball. This will be my fourth time seeing Pearl Jam in Missoula. The last time they played it was the first date of their tour and they played 3 encores......33 songs in one night. I cant wait!
Violent Femmes sing 'Blister In The Sun'. They're awesome! Get their self-titled debut from '83. 'Kiss Off', 'Gone Daddy Gone' & the great 'Add It Up' are all-time Alt-Rock classics. 'Blister In The Sun' is also on their debut. Great album!

I have never owned a Violent Femmes album, but have heard the album of which you speak. I will try and check it out again since Blister and "Kiss Off" are the only ones I remember off hand.
MISSOULA, MT—Pearl Jam will return to Missoula for a one night only benefit concert to support Montana Senate President Jon Tester's election bid for the U.S. Senate. Set for Monday, August 29, 2005 at 7:30 p.m. MDT at the Adams Event Center in Missoula, Montana, the event will help to raise money for the campaign while introducing Senator Jon Tester and his solutions to the key issues affecting Montana.
I also found a bit more info on the PJ show, so there it is. Makes a bit more sense than my original ramblings!
EDIT- I didnt go to the Violent Femmes concert, but my friends that live in Missoula did. It was Halloween so on of my friends had a great Misfits inspired skeleton costume and a few others dressed up as well. One of my friends decided to jump on stage and dance around within 2 minutes of the first song......needless to say he got thrown out before the first song was even over and he missed the rest of the show. The 2 lessons there: Dont drink a gallon of Carlos Rossi wine before you go to a concert, and if you are going to get on stage during a concert....wait until one of the last songs!

For a simply good , fun read try George RR Martin His books a game of thrones, a clash of kings, etc in his series are simply amazing great characters and a great story. brilliant.
Music : HEVY DEVY!!!! Devin Townsend simply ROCKS. Terria is perhaps the finest album ever produced in my mind; think a heavy version of pink floyd.
Games: Halo 2 and GTA San Andreas or Vice City. Entertainment at its finest.
Movies: RepoMan, Army of Darkness, Once upon a time in Mexico, Blazing Saddles, Caddy shack, Fight Club, Jacob's Ladder, the Lord of the Rings, Big Lebowski

I would consider myself a pretty big Led Zeppelin fan. I own all of their albums (ten disc box set), but in truth, I only listen to the first five albums.
I dont care much for Physical Graffiti all the way thru to Coda, but I love I, II, III, IV, and Houses of the Holy.
My 3 favorite Led Zeppelin songs are:
Hey Hey What Can I Do
Going To California
Over The Hills and Far Away
As for Books, I just reread Dalton Trumbo's "Johnny Got His Gun" which I first/last read (for pleasure) in high school. If you have seen the video for "One" by Metallica, then you have seen some of the movie version of Johnny Got His Gun. I would suggest it for anyone who enjoys a good book. I read it around the same time that Stephen King put out "Misery" and they both have the same effect....but Johnny is a better all around read.
There is a (relatively) new DVD out that is available for rent at most major outlets that features my favorite comedian.....Bill Hicks.
I cant remember what it is called, but I just watched it and almost cried when it had to be returned. ANY fans of Bill Hicks should find that DVD!

Whats That Song (New Working Link) (http://www.scenta.co.uk/games/whats_that_song.cfm)
The old link wasnt working, but I this new one should.
For those of you who werent around before, that site has a game where you can put a name of a band or artist into an engine and then play "Name that Tune". For instance, if you were to put Led Zeppelin in the engine it would play ten different clips of Led Zeppelin songs....one at a time, while giving you four choices as to which song it could be. I scored a 9 out of 10 (only because they were putting some of Robert Plant's solo stuff in with the Led Zep collection!)
This game is also a cool way for people to check out new bands.....if you hear of a band and want to check out a 30 sec clip of ten of their songs, you can use the game for that purpose as well. Feel free to try it out and brag of your success or challenge others......I have alot of fun with this site!

I personally don't think Walken could do worse than we have now. I am reminded of a line in the old Lee Marvin/Clint Eastwood movie "Paint Your Wagon". A Mormon is driving a wagon into a mining town with his two wives and is confronted by the miners who say it isn't fair that he has two wives when no one else has one. One of the wives volunteers to be auctioned off to the miners. The Mormon looks at her and says "You don't know what you'll get." She replies "Yes, but I do know what I've had".

That has to be a Happy Days reference.......either I am really not with it and that is a popular saying, or you are the funniest man in the world.
Either way, you guys obviously have a much higher tolerance for the later Led Zep albums than I do.

I am pretty much that way with Black Sabbath too......I love the first 4 albums, but dont listen to anything after them.

BTW, I like 'All My Love', but 'In The Evening', 'South Bend Suarez', 'Fool In The Rain' & 'Carouselambra' are better songs. :Helmet:

I actually love "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath", "Symptom of the Universe" and "Fool in the Rain"......I might need to go over my list again.
Physical Graffiti is a great album if you go by the musicianship....but ALL of Zeppelins music is good. They are all musical geniuses in one way or another, and a Led Zep album is always listenable.....I just feel that the first 5 albums are near perfect so the last 5 seem mediocre in comparison.
There is a saying in Montana (Im sure it is on novelty Tshirts worldwide actually) that the worst day of fishing is still better than the best day at work........I could almost make the comparison that the worst Zeppelin song is still better than 90% of the music that comes out from year to year.

Jump the shark, Meaning Happy Days was good up to the episode where Fonzie jumped the shark, everything after that was crappy!!! you are also right about Led Zep, of course 1 thru 4 were masterpiece's, But Physical Graffiti was a good album as well,
you guy's like "The Who"? One of my top five all time fave bands ever!!!!

I was at a CHargers game in '03 and after every Bolts scoring play, the PA would blare a song (a dance, hip/hop, top 40 tune that I think was a hit on the charts). It said something about "California" and, I think, partying. I know this real vague but does anyone know the name/artist of this song?
Thanks!

The only hip hop song I can think of (off the top of my head) with California and Party in the title/chorus is "California Love" by Tupac (with Dr Dre).....I dont know if that is the song you are talking about ctc....but that might help.
I havent read "On the Road" by Kerouac.....but have known quite a few friends that have. Kerouac was one of the premier "beat" writers (as in beatnik) and his book is (as I am told) a celebration of freedom as told by a guy travelling the country (was he hitchhiking?) and seeing what the US has to offer while using his freedom and new experiences as the muse to write the book. It was compared to "Travels with Charlie" by John Steinbeck and "Ringolevio" by Emmett Grogan (one of the BEST BOOKS EVER).
I am a bit of a Who fan Wyatt.....I only own one Who album (Whos better, Whos Best), and most of the songs I like by them are the standards and classics.
Pinball Wizard
Wont get Fooled Again
Magic Bus
Baba O Reilly
My Generation
I Cant Explain
You Better You Bet
I Can See For Miles
and I am just now beginning to like Happy Jack
I definately respect them for being pioneers and having a unique sound. As musicians go, they are geniuses (esp Moon and Townsend).

I have seen Tommy, but have never seen Quadraphenia. I really didnt care for Tommy, but it had some cool moments.
Quadraphenia was/is Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam's favorite movie and was a big influence on Ed becoming a musician. Since I am not a huge Who fan I dont know for sure, but I guess that the music on Quadraphenia was mostly written by Pete Townsend......Pete Townsend is Eddie's hero. I have heard Pearl Jam play "Let Love Open Your Door" and "Baba O Reilly" at concerts before....and played well.
Just a reminder that I am going to be seeing Pearl Jam on the 29th.
EDIT- I knew Sting was in Quadraphenia just from random music knowledge.....he was also in the Sex Pistols movie "Who Killed Bambi"....and in Jagged Edge (I think that is the name) which was a bad take off of Frankenstein in a way.
I dont care for Sting's solo stuff, but like some music by the Police.

That's the one!.....I have only seen it once, and since I also own the "Great Rock N Roll Swindle" on CD....well let's just leave it as "I was wrong"!
I do own "The Filth and the Fury" which is more of a documentary type movie of the Sex Pistols. Definately a very educational and entertaining look at one of the biggest pioneers in music history.
Boltfan- I think that Led Zep would be going strong today if all of the original members were still alive. I dont know if John Paul Jones is even still alive, but I know he was still producing great albums and working as a studio musician not too long ago. Plant and Page are still touring all the time. The Black Crowes toured with Jimmy Page and did a full Zeppelin set a few years ago. I dont think it has been very long since the last Robert Plant solo album either.
Bobo (and all)- I just got one of those DVD/VHS recorders.....what a gift from the almighty that is!
I recorded a rare and out of print Black Crowes VHS onto a DVD, I recorded a Neil young music video (Needle and the Damage Done) off of the TV, and recorded the 3rd matchup between Wanderlei Silva and Kazushi Sakuraba in Pride Fighting, and recorded an old school George Carlin show off of On Demand ALL ON TO DVD.
Since I know that Bobo is a fellow "VHS archiver", and has been for years, Im sure he can understand the feeling of being able to save 15-20 years of old video tapes onto DVDs......never having to worry about them being eaten in a VCR, or continuing to lose quality as they half-life away on the shelf.
I feel like Yakov Shmirnoff......What a Country!

I dont think that Pearl Jam has ever broken up.....I know that if one member needs/wants time off then the other 4 members are done for a time too.
There have been some "side projects" such as Mad Season and Brad (Both are great)...and they have gone through their fair share of drummers (now with Matt Cameron fom Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog, and Hater)......but I dont believe they have ever split up.
I like the version of My Way and Friggin in the Riggin off of "Swindle". The french language version of Anarchy in the UK is awesome to throw in once in a while, and some good standards. I knew that Sex Pistols only had the one studio album....but they made more of an impact on the face of music than all of Ashlee Simpson's albums combined :) !
Jimi Hendrix only had 3 studio albums out before he died.....he was the original tupac though and he ended up putting out more albums after he died than when he was alive. I hope I dont have to work that hard when I die.....I was kind of hoping for a nap and some Ben and Jerrys....

I knew you were a big Pearl Jam fan!!! The Pearl Jam concert was great!
I was on the main floor in the 22nd row, probably about 50-60 feet away from dead center of the stage. They had rows of chairs set up.....not the coolest thing because who sits down at a concert?
The opening band was a cool punk band that played alot of "The Clash" meets "The Sex Pistols" type stuff. Great musicianship (for punk) and great intensity...I think they were called The Priests and are out of Seattle.....still not a band I would have ever expected to open for PJ (especially when we are supposed to remain seated).
Pearl Jam was great and Eddie seemed to be more than a little tipsy. They played alot of their "greatest hits" type songs, but also did a couple very rare songs. There are so many PJ fans in Missoula and the surrounding area that the place is still filled with the sounds of people singing along to those obscure songs.
The Bass player, Jeff Ament, went to college at the U of M and he and his family live there. It is usually the smallest venue (and has been the opening date of a tour 3 times at least) so it is a great show every time.
Pearl Jam held the concert as a fundraiser for Jon Tester who is running for Senate out of Montana.....but they were also matching funds on another Skate Park for Missoula. I saw the specs for the thing and it looks like it could rival Burnside in Portland for size and coolness.
Pearl Jam have already put together a Skate Park in Missoula, but this one will be in a prime location and is a world away from what the old one was. When I lived in Missoula, I had two roommates that worked at the original one......if Tester can provide as many jobs to my friends as PJ has....Im sure I can consider giving him my vote.
PJ played about as long as they did last time I saw them.....but this time it was divided up into 4 encores! They just kept coming back out. They closed the night with my favorite PJ song which they have always done in Missoula....all in all it was a great night.

I wasnt trying to insinuate anything with my rant, just pointing out the dangers of mind alteration as it applies to music. I was actually just trying to be ironic and the slightest bit comical....but I cant say Ive ever been successfull being either.
Revolver is a great album, but I still say Sgt Peppers was not only the album that changed the Beatles, it was the album that changed the face of music forever.
Do any of you like John Lennon's solo work? John was always my favorite Beatle and I enjoy alot of his stuff that came after the Beatles. Songs like "Working Class Hero", "Instant Karma", "Jealous Guy", "Isolation", "God", and of course "Imagine".......just to name a few  ......really capture alot of what I like about the Beatles. My father would slightly disagree and argue that Paul McCartney had the better solo career.
WEIRD SIDENOTE- Anyone seen the movie I Am Sam with Sean Penn? Lots of Beatles references and a real tearjerker!

Give this indie band a listen.....He has some modern sounds, but a slight tinge of Beatles in there (Check out Space Cadet) (http://www.thebrothermachine.com/music/brother%20machine%20-%20space%20cadet.mp3) his/their name is Brother Machine and you can download for free.

Also check out The Pillbugs.....they have a catchy kind of Beatles style and can be a hoot once in a while. Here is their MP3 page. http://www.pillbugs.com/free%20mp3s.html
Check em out....a little bit of Beatles influence never hurt a band....but dont get me started on Oasis....that band made millions off of ripping off Beatles songs. There is a difference between "paying homage to" and "ripping off", and Oasis crossed that line early in their careers and rode it all the way to the bank!

They do their songs justice on stage and when they do go off on long jams they are still very entertaining. Random Music Question-
If you could bring back any (1) dead musician, who would it be?
I have been thinking about this for a while and when considering everyone from Beethoven to GG Allin, and from Tupac to John Lennon.....I am at a bit of a loss.
I think that in the end I would bring back Shannon Hoon from Blind Melon. He is a personal favorite and his kind of music is very hard to come by. I really think he had alot more left to offer the world.
It took me so long to answer that question to myself that I was curious about how other music fans would answer it. Pardon the random question and feel free to ask your own as well.

You are absolutely right about taking a long time for an answer. When I first read the question, I immediately thought "Hendrix", but then I started coming up with other names and got completely bogged down. I did like the Blind Melon song that was played alot (perhaps because I empathized with the insane point of view lyrics).
Unfortunately, my choices will give away my age. Otis Redding and Marvin Gaye came to mind, but my final two selections (which I can't eliminate to one) were both female. It came down to the most beautiful voices I have ever heard during my long but inglorious lifetime. Patsy Cline and Karen Carpenter.

Great answers guys! Bradley would have probably been my second choice BC.
Redding and Hendrix were a couple of biggies for me too Denver, but I had totally spaced Marvin Gaye....great answer there too! Patsy Cline just gets better with age (and is a jukebox staple at my bar), but cant handle The Carpenters much.....I had a girlfriend who played them until my ears bled:).
Thanks for the well thought out answers guys!

I Recently Saw The Transporter 2
And? How was it?
I saw the first one and was pleasantly surprised by it. I like my hand to hand action films to be really cheesey (like the old Wu Tang and Shaolin movies) or I like them to be really good (like Fist of Legend or Iron Monkey)
I thought the first Transporter had a decent plot, but the fight scenes were as complex (and filmed better) as the newer Jet Li or Jackie Chan movies.
Let us know what you thought of the sequel Rockford!
Someday I want to make the movie "Crouching Fonoti, Hidden Sproles".
On a similar note, I purchased the first season of the original "Kung Fu" series on DVD today. I used to love that show and I dont think I have seen an episode of it for years and years.

Well at first i thought Sid Vicious, but as much as I liked the sEx PiStoLs, I cant say Sid was really a musician, although he was a rock and roll Icon,
So I would have to say, Joltin Joe Strummer, I was really bummed when he passed away, the Clash was and still is an all time favorite of mine!!! Especially Joe Strummer,

I am with you on Sid Vicious. The world is a different place having had Sid in it, but you cant say he was much of a musician! Then again neither was GG Allin, but he was on my short list!
Joe Strummer is a great answer. He just died a few years ago too....so he wouldnt even stink too bad if you brought him back - and would still look better than Keith Richards! http://img392.imageshack.us/img392/7472/comicsbillthecat3ph.gif (http://imageshack.us)
Seriously though, after Bradley Nowell from Sublime died and before Joe Strummer died, there was a compilation album that came out benefiting the "Free the West Memphis 3" (WM3) that Joe Strummer and the new band that the surviving members of Sublime are in (Long Beach Dub All Stars) did a song for.
It was a cover of Jimmy Cliff's "The Harder They Come" and it is a GREAT song. If you picture Strummer singing for Sublime you pretty much have the feel of the song. Worth checking out if you can!
Have any of you seen the documentaries about The West Memphis 3 (http://www.wm3.org/live/caseinfo/index.php) ? "Paradise Lost" will be released on dvd Oct 25th and the sequel "Revelations" is already available on VHS and DVD. Truly frightening!
Death guitarist & vocalist Chuck Schuldiner was bad-ass! Death are 1 of 80's Death-Metal pioneers. Chuck was an amazing guitarist & growler. Ian Curtis of Joy Division is an Alt-Rock legend that I'd love to see around again. I'd love to hear how he'd sing New Order songs. Joe Strummer died way too soon. Too bad The Clash never reformed. :Helmet:

I did'nt even know Ian Curtis died, how long ago was that?
I also find it kinda weird that all but 1 member of the Ramones paassed away, And all within a couple of years of one another!!
Kinda like Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, and Jimi Hendrix, I think they all died within a five year period of one another?Although I could be wrong!!
Jim Croce, Bob Marley, Nat King Cole, The 5th beatle(haha) are all on my short list, It's funny how I can like a band like mega death one minute and then like Jim Croce, Nat KIng Cole the next!!
There are some Dead musicians that should remain dead Like Jim Morrison for instance, and Sid Vicious, I think that if they were to come back they would evenyually end up killing them selves again any way's like Fate were controlling they're destinies, It seems they were hell bent on destroying themselves!!
Ian Curtis hung himself in his home on 5/18/80. The 3 surviving members became New Order, with guitarist Bernard Sumner taking over lead vocals. Glad to hear from you, Wyatt! :Helmet::Beer:

Bob Marley was very high on my list too. Not only was Bob a great musician, he was a true revolutionary. We all have faults and such, and Bob was no different...but he practiced what he preached and me made alot of great music before he died.
Jim Croce is another guy on my list....while I dont consider him a "Great" he was a great singer/songwriter who had alot of really good songs. "I Got a Name" and "Workin at the Car Wash Blues" go through my head a hundred times a day when Im at work
Jim, Jimi and Janis all died close to each other and if I remember right they were all 27 at the time. Alot of musicians die at 27 for some reason (I think Kurt Cobain is among them).
Bobo- as I have stated before, Im no big fan of death metal. I have heard Death on more than one occasion and while I didnt really care much for the "singing" they were definately talented musicians. The guitarist and the drummer really stood out in a Pantera-ish way. Not too bad.

I thought of your sig tonight when I was at work Wyatt. I was playing a song by Johnny Cash called "When the Man Comes Around" and at the beginning and the end Cash is reading the Bible verse that spawned that quote from Tombstone. You should check that song out if you get the chance. (The move "The Hunted" with Tommie Lee Jones and Benicio Del Torro has the song playing as the credits begin to roll).
Side Note- I landed a bootleg of Pearl Jam's concert in Missoula from a year ago. It wasnt from the one I just attended but the one before that. I now have 2 of the 4 shows I have seen by them on disc...it is pretty cool!

I understand how you could have thought that I was "calling you out"....but I assure you it was just me being too lazy to type full sentences.
I directed the first part of the post to someone else and then wanted to comment on your Death guy too so I addressed that part to you. I should have phrased the line better too. "Hey Bobo, I know I have told you before that Im not into much death metal, but I have heard some Death in my day and I was pleasantly surprised by how tight they were as musicians. Even though Im not usually a fan of the "Cookie Monster" type death metal, I dont mind fast music if the words are able to be heard and (somewhat) understood (which Death has over other DM bands). I thought Death had a bit of a Pantera-ish appeal to them with their fast (and well played) guitar and the hard hitting (triggered?) drums...ala Dimebag and Vinnie Paul"
In my head that paragraph means the same as the thing I posted origianally, but I wasnt as clear and I think I was misunderstood.
I see your point about musical genres, though. If you plug in your guitar you play rock....that is how I see it. Pop Punk, Emo, Grunge, Speed Metal...those are just areas of a music store to me. Good music is good music no matter what it is filed under.

Im sorry about the misunderstanding Bobo....I dont care what kind of music any of you listen to.....it is totally cool to post about them here whenever you like. That is the point of the thread IMO.
I like a couple of rap artists/groups. Immortal Technique, Paris, Dead Prez, Jedi Mind Tricks, and the Coup to name a few. These guys are the people who talk about "truth" and "the way it is" from a realtime perspective.
It is difficult to turn most of my peers (rural Montanans) onto this kind of music, but I try and share it with people when I can.
I like "truth" in my music. I also like "Beauty" and "Hatred" and "Comraderie" and "Revenge".......all the basics. :)
My problem with ANY kind of music that you cant understand the words is that it is harder to get that conveyed from the music alone (IMO of course).
Many could argue that alot of great songs have inaudible or nonsensical lyrics or words...I couldnt disagree!
Na Na Na Na Na ........Hey! :)
I know alot of people who love Jimi Hendrix and still dont know that he isnt saying "Scuse me while I kiss this guy".......I understand that you could not listen to Jimi sing and still love the whole album! I still enjoy knowing that Creedence Clearwater Revival is saying "There's a bad moon on the rise" and not "Theres a bathroom on the right".
I dont mind listening to instrumentals. As a Faith No More fan, Im sure that you (Bobo) have "Woodpecker From Mars" on something.....I think that is a powerful song that needs no words. "Samba Pa Ti" by Santana, "Whale and Wasp" by Alice In Chains, "Falling Idols" by Sublime and "12xU" by Minor Threat are a few examples of other awesome songs that dont need words (understood or otherwise).
On the way to work (half hour drive) I listened to a cd that had "Dead Skin Mask" by Slayer, "Backmask" by Mindless Self Indulgence, and "TV II" by Ministry. I doubt anyone would consider those bands to be Death Metal....but noone would consider them to be "Lounge Music" either. I like a little of the ol' ultraviolence in my music from time to time!

I know alot of people who love Jimi Hendrix and still dont know that he isnt saying "Scuse me while I kiss this guy".......
Sorry but I couldn't let this one slide. Although the lyrics were "scuse me while I kiss the sky", during a concert at Regis College in Denver, Hendrix sang the lyrics as "scuse me while I kiss this guy" and gave his drummer, Mitch Mitchell a kiss on the cheek.

Another cool game is World Domination.
totally agree with this one

I like a little of the ol' ultraviolence in my music from time to time!No apologies are necessary, Igor. As I stated, I had fun with my response to being called out. As you also stated, you didn't mean for your post to call me out, but it's OK. Again, don't apologize. You didn't degrade me personally, so all is good. We're 2 dudes that are passionate about music, especially Alt-Rock in particular. Have you ever heard, "With Sympathy"-Ministry. It's their 1st album & they were New Wave back in '83. It's a great album. I love all of Ministry's stuff. They were a great New Wave band that evolved into a great Industrial/Speed-Metal band. Al Jourgensen is a musical genius. I like 'Dead Skin Mask', but I prefer Slayer's fast stuff. 'Chemical Warfare' is my favorite song by them & "Reign In Blood" is an all-time classic album. 'Chemical' is off their 2nd album, "Haunting The Chapel". "Haunting" is an EP with only 3 songs, but it's great. As far as instrumentals go, I love them. Check out 'Thrash Attack'-Destruction. It's off their 2nd album, "Infernal Overkill". It came out in '85.

Wyatt,Hey, Droogie! Just drinking beer & enjoying Friday Eve. Haha! How about the Bolts not choking & destroying the Giants in the 2nd 1/2! I was so pissed after we went up 21-3 & then the Giants came back to make it 21-20. The Bolts blew them away in the 2nd 1/2 & that was great! I wish Sheli would've been sacked more, but the Bolts still destroyed the Little Giants. 'Pounded Into Dust'-Cannibal Corpse, would've fit the Bolts blowout. BTW, priorities come 1st. Yeah that was a killer game, I actually got to watch it, My two boys did'nt have any football game's on sunday, so I drank beer :Beer:and watched NFL Football :Football: all day! My all time fave hobbie!!! :D
Our Bolts KICKED ASS!!! I was starting to get a little nervous before the 2nd half when the Giants went up to 20 points,
I was hopping for a little more drama regarding SHE-LI MANNING,at least a twisted ankle! haha, oh Yeah and when is that Merriman supposed to step up to the plate and shine? last week against trhe Giants would have been a good time!! I'm still waiting for him to do that "Lights Out"thing he does when he make's a sack
Your right about 'pounded into dust', I'm getting tired of "we will, we will, rock you", as the main song played at stadiums It's a little dated!! Some hard core death metal would get the fans pumped!!!!

For you Charger fans who like country music ... I am posting these lyrics from Chad Brock from a few years back. I think they're kind of inspirational, heading into New England this week.
Chad Brock Lightning Does The Work Lyrics
(Chad Brock/John Hadley/Kelly Garrett)
You know nothin's gettin' done when talk is all you hear
Like someone revvin' up a truck never put in gear
But you don't see a cowboy run his mouth and strut around
He just takes the bull by the horns and throws him to the ground
Takin' care of business not just puttin' on a show
When it gets down to it, everybody knows
It ain't the smoke, it's the fire that gets the burnin' done
If it wasn't for the bullet, nobody'd fear the gun
It ain't the bark, it ain't the growl, it's the bite that hurts
Thunder's just a noise, boys, lightnin' does the work!
You can talk about the farm or you can plow the ground
Argue with a rusty nail or hammer it on down
You can stand there in the dark cussin' at the night
Or you can just reach out your hand and turn on the light
There ain't no limit in this life to how far you can get
But if you're goin' all the way you gotta break a sweat
It ain't the smoke, it's the fire that gets the burnin' done
If it wasn't for the bullet, nobody'd fear the gun
It ain't the bark, it ain't the growl, it's the bite that hurts
Thunder's just a noise, boys, lightnin' does the work!
I've heard thunder talkin' up a storm
Rattlin' my windows and knockin' on my door
But I've seen lightnin' blow a cypress tree in half
The thunder's busy talkin', and lightnin's kickin' ASS! :Bolt:
It ain't the smoke, it's the fire that gets the burnin' done
If it wasn't for the bullet, nobody'd fear the gun
It ain't the bark, it ain't the growl, it's the bite that hurts
Thunder's just a noise, boys, lightnin' does the work!
Thunder's just a noise, boys, lightnin' does the work!
Here's to the lightning getting the work done in New England ... and coming out with a HUGE WIN!
Go Chargers! :Bolt:

I have that Johnny Cash C.D. when the man comes around, with the Nine Inch Nails song "Hurt" I havent really listened to the lyrics all that closley which I'll remedy very soon,
Glad you got your Pearl Jam Disc,

Thanks for the link Dan. After checking out the site and their reason for doing it (http://http://www.harveydanger.com/press/why.php) (allowing free downloading of their full album) I will buy the physical album at the local music store when/if I can.
It is very cool to see a band treat their music and their fans with respect and not see them as parasites and criminals. Word of mouth advertising should be something bands should embrace, and if you dont have faith in your album then you shouldnt release it and charge close to 20 bucks for it! (sounds like Harvey Danger's new CD will be 11.99 by the way.)
Take that Metallica!
Cool song Chargertom! I will have to do what I can to find that one! I am working at a hick bar right now and on Tue and Wed I have access to the CD player (but have to stay "in character") so I have been finding every good country song I can find.....which surprisingly enough, only fills 7 CDs. I will not only check out this song, but find a way to listen to it at work and think of the Bolts on the company's dime!
Bobo and Wyatt- I thought Shawne did a great job on Sunday. He is listed as the 3rd string OLB on the depth chart after Foley and SP....I think he would shine alot more if he got to play more. Sunday nights game showed that he does have a great motor, great speed, and a mean streak. With SP "questionable" this week Shawne might get some more playing time and have a better chance to show his stuff. I am already convinced though.....I saw everything I needed to see on Sunday from him. If he keeps Arrington and his agent out of his ear he should be a great addition for the Bolts for years to come. :Bolt:

He definitely is very fiery & very fast. I wish he just had the opportunity to land at least 1 very hard, clean & legal shot on Sheli. Not to injure her, just for her to have felt she got leveled. Oh well, the Bolts destroyed them in the 2nd 1/2 & won the game, so that's all that matters. As the season goes on, Shawne's gonna unseat Leber & start opposite to Steve. His intensity, skills & intelligence are gonna make it to where the Bolts will have no choice but to start him. Anyway, Shawne plays :Football: like a Death-Metaller & Punker! :Helmet:

If you're DJ'ing for this 'hick bar', send me your song list. I can find you some tunes that will have them on their feet ... singing and dancing. I like all kinds of music, especially country, alternative and heavy metal. Not too much of a punk, hip hop, raggae or rap fan. Just not my styles.
There is a TON of good country music out there. Not your twanging, cry in your beer variety either.
If you want to get that place jumping, let me know. I'll burn you a few discs, and you can check out the crowd and see if I hit a homer or bunted.

Im not really DJing per se. I tend bar at a "hick bar" located in the middle of nowhere near Helena MT....if you listen to the song "Roadhouse Blues" by The Doors it pretty much describes the place perfectly (complete with "bungalows in the back")
We have the largest indoor dance floor in the area and we cater to a mostly rural/C&W group of people. There is live music on Fridays and Saturdays and the bands are always bands that play mostly country. The jukebox is 97% country music (out of 100 CDs the only 3 that arent country are ZZ Top, Fleetwood Mac, and Creedence Clearwater Revival).
Because of the stage set up (which is concert quality...the Bellamy Brothers will be singing out of it on Nov 2 and Ricochet will be around the Thanksgiving weekend) and my disdain for the horrible jukebox, I usually bring my own CDs to play through the sound system on Tue, Wed. and Thur. On those nights there is a fair mix of country types and classic rock types so I am free to work within those genres freely.
I have all kinds of great classic rock albums, southern rock albums, and even "outlaw"ish country albums (Cash, Haggard, Hank I II and III, , Willie, Waylon, Coe, and Earle to name a few). I try to mix it up so everyone gets to hear what they like.
I am constantly compiling mix discs in order to keep it fresh and not play the same stuff week in and week out. I was able to find that "Lightning does the work" song.....that will go on a mix disc this week for sure.
I would be more than happy to do a music swap kind of thing with you if you have some good country to turn me on to. I am not a big fan of country, so my views on "good country" are more limited than my customers so it is hard to truly gauge what they would like. I sure would appreciate some input from an informed and "real" country music fan. Im sure my regulars would appreciate it too!
Drop me a line sometime and we can figure out a good swap so I can repay your kindness....depending on your musical taste Im sure I have something(s) that you would enjoy!
