For me it has to be The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I couldn't sleep for days after I saw it. That was just a sick movie. What movie scared you the most?

I have been a fan of horror movies since I was very young. I watched all the Freddy movies and have seen as many scary movies as most of the people I know...combined.
In all that time and throughout all of those movies I have only been scared twice.
The Shining
and
The Excorcist (It was even the "tv version"....but I was 8 years old)
Dont get me wrong, there are movies like "The Grudge" that make you jump out of your seat, but they really arent scary.
The Excorcist and the Shining made me lose sleep!

Although it wasn't really a scary movie, the most disturbing movie I have ever seen is House of 1000 Corpses.

The exorcist scared the bejeebies out of a lot of people when it first came out. I can still remember a lady at my work who was a nervous wreck the entire day after she saw it. Fortunately for me, I had dated uglier girls than the possessed girl in the movie, so it wasn't a big deal.
The movies that scared me were the ones that seemed plausible, like they could really happen (as opposed to Freddy and Jason). Two I remember were "Play Misty for Me" with Clint Eastwood and Jessica Walter and "Fatal Attraction" with Michael Douglas.
"Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned".

If I had to pick one, I would go with Pet Sematary. The scene in the bedroom where the girls sister, who has spina bifida, comes crawling toward here really fast, saying "See What You Did To Me".
That or Misery, When Kathy Bates takes a sledgehammer to James Caans ankle.

Event Horizon freaked me out. I saw it in the theater when I was like 18 with some friends and we were on the verge of walking out because we couldn't take it anymore.

In the context of my life I have to say the scariest movie I've ever seen was the original Texas Chainsaw. Todays movies just arn't scary any more. Saw was very suspenseful and very well made, but not scary.
Oddly enough I have to add a few video games to this list, as I think this is one genre where games have exceeded movies in provoking an emotional response.
Eternal Darkness
Resident Evil 4
(who says the cube is for kiddies?!?!?)

Misery didnt scare me, but was "creepy" as a movie can get. That scene from Pet Sematary IS a very scary scene. I remembered it perfectly as soon as you brought it up. The scene with the kid (gauge) when he takes out "herman munster" is kind of creepy, but not very scary.....the scene with the sister is scary for sure.

CANDYMA.....................
Mrs. Baylock's close-up along with the scary Opera music before she pushed Mrs. Thorn out the window in The Omen gave me nightmares for weeks when I 1st saw it. I was babysitting my cousin that night & both of us were scared ****less from that scene. HBO showed back-to-back Omen movies on 1/25/85. That was 1 week before my 14th B-Day. I finally rented it in '99 & that scene is still scary, but I was like, "So this is what scared you?" It wasn't as scary as it was to me as a teenager, but it's still scary. I bought the VHS in '00 & love it. Mrs. Baylock still has the most evil-looking expression I've ever seen, but I can laugh at it now.
Does anyone remember the movie 'Magic'? It came out in '78 & starred Anthony Hopkins & Ann-Margret. That commercial with the ventriloquist dummy scared the **** out of me! I'd run away from the TV when it came on & I had nightmares from it. I finally saw the movie about 12 yrs. ago. It's not really a horror movie, but it has some creepy scenes, especially when Fats lets loose on Corky's mind. What an awesome scene!

I never watched all of "magic" but I know what you are talking about and that dummy was creepy! Kind of reminds me of how scary the toy clown in the movie "Poltergeist".......the old man in "Poltergeist 2" was pretty scary too.

I've watched too many terror movies from the young age. I can't get scare even if I watch a movie alone in the dark but I'm scare of spiders movies.
I remember watching this movie about a extremely poinsonous spider populated in an American farm and kill almost everyone. I was 7 then so the impact is deep. Now I'm more afraid of a spider than a dead human body, zombies, ghost, etc....

I saw this movie called 'Maniac' on IFC about 1AM or so. There's a pretty gory scene when the killer blows this guy's face & head to bits with a powerful shotgun blast.

I was 5 years old and my uncle and dad took me to see Jaws on a Friday night.
The next day, Saturday, we all go to the beach (F'n sob's).
I muster the courage to venture into the water and turn around to wave at my family -- with my back turned to the on coming surf, a huge wave (by a 5 year old's standard) swallows me up and I go tumbling in the white water.
In my little 5 year old brain I was absolutely certain I was in the mouth of a great white shark. After finaly coming back up for air, I scurried out of the water and didn't go back into the water all summer after that.

It would have to be "The children of the Corn" or "the Fog" or Friday the 13th part 3.
"Friday The 13th, Part 2" scared the Hell out of me when I 1st saw it on HBO in '82. It came out in theaters in '81. Jason wore the sheet or pillow case in that 1. I've only seen parts of "3". I remember it was in 3-D when it came out in '82. I still want to see the entire movie. Jason debuted the goalie mask in "3".

I thought the first "Friday the 13th" was the scariest, when the chick was trapped in the cabin was tense and when Jason popped out of the water at the end... that made everyone jump! "Evil Dead 2" was pretty good as well I think. Man, I gotta go and rent some of these flicks again, just came from the video store with "the Village".

I rented Evil Dead 2 when I was in California for the summer. My mom and step dad worked during the day and if I had some money I would hit the local video store to pass some time before they got home.
I was a regular customer at the video store and all of the employees knew who I was and that it was fine with my mother if I wanted R rated movies. I was a horror movie freak even back then and I had rented most of the horror movies in the place. I had never heard of Evil Dead 1 or 2 at that time, and Army of Darkness wasnt out yet....so I rented Evil Dead 2 without any knowledge of what it was about or anything. I ended up watching alone (as I often did) and I can remember it kind of being scary.....not anything that kept me up at night, but scary none the less. Keep in mind I was only about 11 years old at the time.
On a semi-related note, I am disappointed with the current state of Horror movies. I dont really care for movies like "The Grudge" and the rest that rely on quick editing and sudden shots of scary images to get the shock or scare out of the viewer. I really havent seen a movie that is scary throughout or overall. Too many movies just rely on scenes where the hero turns a corner and the music gets really loud all of a sudden and WHAM there is the monster (close up and snarling)......
Does anyone remember the scene from the Shining where "Doc" is out playing in the snow and they cut to the Jack Nicholson character looking out the window at him. Nicholson has this insane "thousand yard stare" and it is one of the creepiest images in the history of film IMO. The bathroom scene of the Shining is another example of where you know there is something in the bathtub.....and then you know what it is....and then you get a really good shot of what it actually is.....
It is long and drawn out, and gives you the feeling like you are in one of those dreams where you just cant run fast enough.
That to me is scary.
EDIT-- I am with mgpretzel that the Sound of Music is truly frightening.

You're right. Scary movies aren't very scary anymore. We're de-sensitized, we've seen it all or at least imagined it. Some of us who are a tad older than you were scared by movies like "the Birds" and "Night of the Living Dead". These were ground breaking scare the schiznit out of you movies. No computer effects and dazzle. I saw "Planet of the Apes" at about 10 years old and it scared me! My son watched the original "Apes" and the re-make when he was about 10 and he thought they were a joke, which they are. I think the first "Friday the 13th", "Omen", "the Shining", "Alien", "the Exorcist", "Amityville" are some of the last classic actually scary movies, all about 25-30 years old. I think it would help if drive-ins were still going strong, scary movies seemed scarier to me at the drive-in.

i've haven't seen it. Whats it about?
Briefly, an unemployed writer gets a job as the caretaker of a huge old luxury hotel in Colorado. It's a seasonal place, and someone has to stay there during the winter months when it is shut down because it needs daily tending (especially the ancient boiler). He brings his wife and young son, who has had emotional problems in the past.
While just the exploration of what can happen to people's minds when cut off from the outside world would be scary enough, it turns out that the hotel is haunted, and the son's incredible psychic powers are causing some of the ghosts to come to life. The Stanley Kubrick film is absolutely amazing, worth the time to watch it. Not so much for the TV version of a few year's back.
But, if you care to, read the book first, if you like a good scare, because that book is incredible.

IT is scary but it not scary now cuz it old fashion...that movie need to remade into our current techonogly...
Too bad my all-time favorite movie, "A Clockwork Orange", dosen't classify as a horror movie. There are frightening elements to it, like if the Ludovico Technique was for real & used today. "1984" is another 1 that's not a horror movie, but would be a scary society to live under.

A Clockwork Orange isnt scary....but it is disturbing and that is better than the new movies that go for the quick cut of the "monster" that knocks you back in your seat that seems to be the only thing that constitutes horror these days.
As for 1984, { These words have been edited by the Thought Police.....please go back to work......you love your government and they love you........} and you are right, it is a good thing our government/society isnt like that!

1) Charlie & the Chocolate Factory
2) Exorcist (when I was little)
3) Child Play a.k.a. Chuckie (when I was little)

Jacobs Ladder; it was also DANM sweet too, one of my faves; the first time I saw it I was messed up by it. then after watching it a few times I was more in simple awe of the film and its vision.
