View Full Version : Nate Clements - Do we even want him???

Buffalo Bills star CB will be an UFA at the end of this season. I live near Buffalo and hear a great deal of media coverage surrounding the Bills (It was great when we blew them out this year). This morning on the local talk radio they played a montage of clips with music in the background of Clements getting burned by many of the top recievers in the league. Recievers such as Chris Chambers, Randy Moss, Eric Parker, Rod Smith, David Givens (and those are just the ones I can remember). The whole purpose of the clips was to hype his matchup with Chad Johnson this week in Cincinatti. Side Note : His touchdown celebration after he beats Clements will involed a live deer and a Christmas theme! lol. Johnson is so confident that he will beat Clements just like everyone else this year that he is planning his biggest celebration ever against the Bills CB. He is the self proclaimed "best CB in the NFL" (what is with average Bills players saying that they are the best in their position in the NFL, haha). He has come out and said to the Bills that if they want to keep him then they will have to pay him as the 'best' in the league. I know the Bills wont "show him the money". At the beginning of the season I was very exited about the idea of Nate going to SD, I am certainly not now. He will be available to the highest bidder, does anyone actually think that AJ should put us in the Clements Auction?? Discuss.....

here is the thing...AJ tends to not ever go for the guys you get into bidding wars for. I think he's right that that is the best way to overpay big time for a player. I expect that AJ will look more for an under the radar type...that is more his style.
On the issue of how worth it Clements is...I don't think a shut down corner exists anymore. New rules I think have essentially killed the position. The best you can hope for now is corner who can create a lot of turnovers. Thats what AJ should be on the lookout for.

Jammer has his moments where you understand why he was drafted high but he is way too inconsistent. For example, before Sunday's game against the Colts he had 12 passes defended (hands on ball, knocking it away), 9 pass interference/illegal contact penalties, and 0 INTs. I'm working on looking into how he stacks up with other "#1" CBs in the league in these stats but I'm guessing he's near the bottom of the list. It's gotten so bad that whenever there's a flag in the secondary on 3rd down my friends and I utter the words "damnit Jammer", and sadly we're right about 75% of the time.
But this thread isn't about Jammer, It's about Nate Clements. I agree with maverjoe about AJ not getting into bidding wars over players. Personally I think we need a ball hawk like Deltha O'Neal (10 INTs on the season), or someone similar. So no, I hope we don't go after Clements but I do hope we go after another veteran CB and either bump Jammer to 2nd CB or experiment with him playing safety.

Regarding Jammer, he pretty much did as good a job as you can on Harrison. And he had at least 3 batted balls, on man coverage.

I heard that harrison now has a fractured hand.
Whenever jammer is involved in a passs defense, we always yell: no flags! no flags! then if there are no flags we cheer and hi 5.

I agree... with current NFL rules you need a ball hawk. Delta, Dawkins (safety) Nathan Vasher. I like those guys because they always come out with a pick.
P.S. No we do not want self proclaimed "best players" and overpay him

Being the number 1 corner changes quickly in the NFL. Nate was beat by many receivers including Eric Parker. A.J. knows Nate pretty well having come from the Bills. I agree that we can afford him but I don't think we will go into a bidding war for Nate. Maybe our priority is the offensive line for free agency and dabbling in the draft for a big time corner. Jammer is beginning to make consistent plays against the top receivers. Let's hope this trend continues.

After the way Clements has performed this season I don't think AJ should pursue him in any way.
Also, I like the way Jammer has been performing the last few games. He has been getting better and I only hope his growth continues to result in more consistent plays and less penalties.
I say let's go after a very experienced Safety rather than a cornerback.

Clements is a pretty good corner. He has struggled this year, but he is still one of the top 10 corners in the NFL in my opinion.

It's funny you bring that up... LT said the following about Willis M and his self proclamation of being the best.
LT said that you have to believe that you are "the best" but do not go to the media and yell it out, specially if you can't back it up!
Now that is the diff between LT, WM and Nate

I think this will be one of the biggest changes we will have in the off season. Jammer is either going to stay at cb or maybe move him to a safety position. Then we gotta decide who stays at the other corner. Davis, Fletch, Florence. I say we part with sammy davis and grab a FA CB.

davis has gotten better and better every year--why would you destroy the depth we have at corner?
sammy gets one more year-just like fletcher who will be entering his 6th year next year has improved drastically from his rookie season so will sammy who will be entering his 4th year next year
florence is also going to get better-------you guys keep harping on the secondary but you have to admit that the improvements over the last seven or so games in the secondary are palpable and real--a lot of credit has to go to jue and also hart who has been getting more and more reps as the season has progressed--
a jue with hart is our best option at safety;)

I'm with some of you fellas, Don't lay out a monster contract for Clements, the secondary's talent level is fine. What is not fine is the secondary coach, Brian Stewart. His butt is gone at the end of the season. That is Marty's Number #1 challenge of the offseason, land the Chargers an excellent unit position coach for the DBs.
Again, like others have mentioned, I am interested in Eric Moulds. He may come at a reasonable dollar figure. If not, we'll look elsewhere.

Im not so sure that davis has been that good this year? I think teams were challenging Jammer more than davis when he was in there. I think we can do without davis. Maybe we can put him in a safety position for next year.

whatch the tape of the Philly game and you will see that davis had a decent game--as a matter of fact the whole secondary did pretty well that day T.O. got one TD but he only had like 3-4 catches in the whole game

it is kind of ironic that davis lost the nickel job to fletcher but when one of our starting corners gets hurt it is davis that takes their place and not fletcher--you woul think that the natural progression was for the nickel back to move up to replace the injured guy--to me that means that the coaches still have faith in sammy davis

we can expect to pay him about 30 million for 5 years with about a 7 million dollar bonus--that is the deal that the bears gave muhamed last year--something along those lines will reel him in and he is worth every penny
don't forget that 4 years ago we gave tim dwight 18 million over four years and stephen alexander 16 million over 4 years--considering those deals and what we recieved in return-giving moulds 30 million is a bargain

Ball hawking secondary players are a Double Edged Sword. They may get more picks, but they also get burned for big ones, usually Touchdowns, alot more.
The current rules in the NFL are Pro-Receiver, and anti-Secondary. Good Safeties and Corners are getting penalized for playing a style that was used just 2 seasons ago. Meanwhile, Receivers, knowing that they have the advantage, are using this to their advantage, and making moves that get the safeties and corners penalties, that wouldn't have been given in times past.
I would still rather have someone get a 40 yard penalty for Pass Interference, than get burned for a TD. Of course, I would prefer neither, but in today's NFL, the latter is not up to the Secondary, as much as it is up to the Pass Rush.
Jammer is among the best in the NFL, penalties aside. Don't kid yourself into thinking otherwise.

Waste of money on Clements...our CBs are about as good as most other teams. Our weakness is the middle and we need a NAMED veteran in the SS or FS positions.

What games were u watching. Jammer is a bum.....a good game for Jammer is when he doesn't get beat deep more than 3 times a game. Did u see how far back he was playing on the Colts recievers LOL i guess he learned his lesson last year against reggie wayne and Marvin. Jammer will shine at FS or even SS he is in it for CB salary thats it. IMO he is a overrated overpaid bum.

I think you have some pretty unrealistic concepts of what a Good Corner does. He had like 7 passes defended in the colts game and didn’t allow Harrison to score or control the outside of the field.
What this team lacks are safeties that are students of the game. All the secondary people we have are good athletes. They need to become Field captains and know the defense inside and out. If that happens it will change everything for us on the defensive side.

We all have to support the chargers in every way,but lets face it i agree with the wall.Jammer has had a couple of decent games,he did a great job on harrison, but overall you have to admit he's on the bottom of the chart when it comes to #1 corners. He gets burned a lot and rack up a lot of penalties.I dont know, maybe he'll have some new found confidence from the colts game, cause to me he has been a disappointment. When another fan from a rival team says that Jammer is a bum, there's not much u can say to defend him

Jammer is coming along great!! the problem is when he does bad people are all over him, but when he does well no one mention his name!!!he is slowly becoming a corner known for his phyiscalness, and the refs r starting to let him play like that!!
