Resign Wilhelm and Cooper and they they will be just fine.
whilem will most likely goto browns they'll probably pay more for him then were willing to, and if they dont resign andra davis i think its a bad idea to pass on that, he's the most underrated ILB in the league
P.S. great job on this research its much appreciated

You got it hambone....it's just frustrates me sometimes when we bicker about our 9-7 season and pointing fingers and all that....when we should be talking about 06 and what we can do to improve our team. Go Bolts!

weak field of LB's....
Julian Peterson only one worth anything to me and even he struggled returning from his injuries this season...
good thing you all are strong at this position...

i have a very strong feeling that Donnie will be let go this offseason and Wilhelm will be starting in his place. therefore, he wont be going to the browns.

June would be a nice fit for our D for sure. We're pretty strong at OLB and coulf use at least one ILB.

no he wouldn't....
he's a system linebacker....
he's a cover 2 LB exclusively....he'd limit your D's versatility
he wouldn't crack the starting LB core of your team...your other LB's are too good for him to beat out....

Your nuts dude. He's quick and would be able to make plays in our 3-4. IMO

not true. I would be extremely happy if we signs andra davis. He had an excellent season as a 3-4 ILB for the browns. One of the few bright spots on their team.
from NFl.com: 149 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 interception, 3 passes deflected
not bad

Donnie Edwards??? You've GOT to be KIDDING!!! What freaking source did you get this from??? He's still got a few more years left, why would you even consider it??? He still TOTALLY led the team in tackles.
And 9-7 wha??? I'm so over it...here's to next year!!!

I would like June, Davis, or Peterson but i think we should focus on a big play WR, O-line and safety the linebackers would be insurance/luxury.

its probably because donnie edwards wants to be paid top dollar and he lost a step this season, yes i know he made all those tackles but he wasnt up to speed
i say we dont let him go hes too good, and a reason he lost a step was his knee injury.

not much to say here just that i think we need to keep carlos polk and matt wilhelm and let go of leber... nobody jumps out at me in this list and plus we are solid... it wouldnt hurt to take a inside linebacker in the draft though since edwards and godfrey are getting up there
I didn't hear anyone mention Lavar Arrington. I still think that the Redskins are going to let him go. He's expensive and he complains too much. If he comes to SD I see him resurecting his career here with Merriman as his bff. lol. Play him inside and let him roam around the way he did at Penn State and he'd be unstoppable. Just as fast as Donnie but bigger. It's a reach but, still, it's possible, very possible.
I would love to see Lavar in SD but from the way he talks to the press he would rather retire then play any where else then Washington. Hopefully that is just smoke. I posted this on a different thread earlier. My dream for next years Defense
Hope(FS) Williams(SS)
Jammer(DB) Clements(DB) Florence(Nickel)
Merriman(OLB) Wilhelm(ILB) Arrington(ILB) Foley(OLB)
Castillo(DE) Williams(DLT) Olshansky(DE)
Plus Lavar is a very good pass rusher. Mix him with Merriman, Foly, Phillips, Wilhelm, Cooper and Edwards. No one would be talking about Pittsburg or Denvers LB just ours

We need another nasty LB. I know we have merriman and foley but we need someone like joey porter from the steelers or takeo spikes from the bills. we need someone to bring a nasty attitude to our defense.

I would love to see that front 7. I really like the way Wilhelm has played when given the chance. Hope and Arrington would be great pick ups. Clements = overpriced + overrated

Will Witherspoon is an UFA who caught my eye this weekend. He's active. Flys to the ball. Smart - seems to diagnose plays well. Not a hard hitter but a good tackler. Good hands. No major injury problems. With his size he seems suited to ILB in a 3-4.

http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/302150 (from NFL.com).
This will be his second NFL contract, so he may not come cheap. Would also have to learn the 3-4. Looking at his stats, he has shown improvement over his 4 years. If the price is right (and if Godfrey retires), I think he could be an under-the-radar signing (a la Goff, Foley) who could be an impact player. If we lose Godfrey, I'd like to see him next to Edwards next year at ILB.
Witherspoon reminds me of a donnie edwards type of player. I dont think Carolina will let him go he is a good player. I think he plays OLB just like Donnie in KC.

isn't john abraham from the jets a free agent too. if he is, we should go for him if godfrey retires. we will move foley to the middle and start abraham on the right side.

Abraham will cost a lot of $$$. IMO Foley is better suited for a OLB in the 3-4. I dont think his coverage skills are very good. he is more of a Pass rusher.

Foley was a nobody in the NFL for six seasons, playing out of position in both 4-3 and 3-4 schemes.
With the Chargers, he's finally moved to the weakside OLB position in the 3-4 that is suited to his skills and he's a star.
They're not moving Foley.

He's a very underrated, and obviously under-appreciated, player. I have no idea why. In any event, he also played under Marty in Kansas City. Donnie isn't going anywhere as long as Marty is here.

He wasn't overrated or underappreciated by me through 2004. He had several overall excellent seasons for the Chargers through that point.
But I trust my own eyes - Donnie had a very poor year in 2005 and teams picked on the unblocked Charger all year long - both in the passing game and running straight at (and over) him.
Unless he agrees to restructure, I don't see him back in 2006 - Marty being the coach or not. His play this past season didn't warrant half of his salary - and yes, I know the number of tackles the unblocked Charger made this past year.
Just my opinion and I might be wrong. But as I said, I'm going on what I observed after seeing all 16 games this past season.
I am sure his knee had alot to do with the lack of solid play but at this age 33 I hind it hard to believe that he will be as good as previous years. He is only 223lbs so he gets carried alot after contact. Wilhelm is bigger 6-4 245lbs stronger, younger, cheaper, and now Im sure he will be faster. He does lack the experience but we have solid vets in the front 7 to help him out.

Donnie is one of my favorite players with what he brings on and off the field, so I am biased. I hope last year was an abberation, but it's probably father time creeping up on him. I want the best player at each position, so if we get a better player at Donnie's position (Ben Leber or someone else), no one will be grinning more than me. It's all about the team, a concept obviously lost on T.O. ;) (I realize that's off topic, but it certainly fits here.)

There are only a few LB's in that entire group that have made a name in the NFL. Other than that they are all backup's.

If his money expectations aren't very high and if he's really healthy i would like if we added Peterson. I get the feeling he could play ILB; i think Godfrey just has one more year in him, Peterson could be a guarantee for us at LB. Maybe even sing a younger MLB; someone like Greisen or Kassell.
