Depth at any position is important. But one player may mean more to the team’s depth than any other and it appears that the Chargers will lock him up before free agency.

Defensive lineman Jacques Cesaire (http://scout.scout.com/a.z?s=102&p=8&c=1&nid=1716333) is one of the primary focuses for the Chargers prior to his eligibility for restricted free agency on March 3.
Both sides are optimistic that a deal will be done before the start of free agency.
Being discussed – a multi-year deal.
Locking up Cesaire gives the team plenty of options in their 3-4 defense. Cesaire has started 18 games over the last two years and has proved capable on both ends of the line.
At 6-foot-2, 295-pounds, he also provides some depth at the nose tackle position behind Jamal Williams (http://scout.scout.com/a.z?s=102&p=8&c=1&nid=1776537). While he does not own the girth of Williams, he has been technically sound when tasked with playing the middle and has taken on double teams.
“He works very, very diligently,” said head coach Marty Schottenheimer (http://scout.scout.com/a.z?s=102&p=8&c=1&nid=1776527). “He is extremely bright and he gets better every day.”
He is best suited for either end behind Luis Castillo (http://scout.scout.com/a.z?s=102&p=8&c=1&nid=1879361) and Igor Olshansky (http://scout.scout.com/a.z?s=102&p=8&c=1&nid=1776512). Cesaire is another strong run defender and has flashed ability to collapse the pocket.
Signed as an undrafted free agent out of South Connecticut State in 2003, Cesaire recorded 25 tackles in 2005 with a sack.
Perhaps the best praise of the lineman came from the head coach of the Super Bowl winning Pittsburgh Steelers (http://steelers.scout.com/):
“I didn’t know much about him but I’m very impressed after watching him play,” Bill Cowher said of Cesaire. Look for the deal to be wrapped up in the next two weeks as the Chargers continue to lock up their own pending free agents.

I think this is good news, hes developing into a solid backup but to tell you guys the truth, I would like cesaire to get bigger so he can back up

I like this move because as stated in the article he can play all 3 Dline possitions. I would still like to get a true NT to back up Jamal so we can leave JC for DE

I've noticed his improvement week by week...
Marty's right when he says he keeps getting better and better.

That will be a great sign, i love that the Chargers are keeping and rewarding our own players. I think this is a good way to keep a competitive team year in and year out.
