As the Chargers head into the free agent market, they will looking for any advantage they can get. They have money to spend (they’re approximately $20 million under the salary cap) and they play in America’s finest city. More importantly, however, they just brought aboard new coaches with new connections.

Earlier this offseason, the Chargers announced the signing of Jack Henry as their new offensive line coach. Henry spent the last six seasons in New Orleans, where he was charged with developing the Saints’ young offensive line prospects, such as LeCharles Bentley (http://scout.scout.com/a.z?s=102&p=8&c=1&nid=1966967) - a Pro Bowler this year for the second time in his four seasons in the league. Bentley will be an unrestricted free agent in March.
Bentley is a hardnosed, gritty player who has the ability to play either center or guard at an elite level. In San Diego, Bentley would push Nick Hardwick (http://scout.scout.com/a.z?s=102&p=8&c=1&nid=1776472) for the starting center job, but could end up at either guard post as well. His combination of power and intensity would help add consistency to the running game, one of Coach Schottenheimer’s top offseason priorities.
The Chargers’ second big coaching import was John Ramsdell, who was an assistant coach with the Rams for 11 years. Although Ramsdell primarily coached quarterbacks in St. Louis, he did spend the 2003 season as the tight ends coach, where he worked with another pending free agent, Brandon Manumaleuna (http://scout.scout.com/a.z?s=102&p=8&c=1&nid=1922458). In their year together, Manumaleuna set career highs with 29 receptions for 238 yards.
Although the Chargers have Antonio Gates (http://scout.scout.com/a.z?s=102&p=8&c=1&nid=1776466) firmly entrenched as their starting tight end, back-up Justin Peelle (http://scout.scout.com/a.z?s=102&p=8&c=1&nid=1776519) is set to become a free agent. Manumaleuna’s size (six-foot-two, 288 lbs.) allows him to function almost like a sixth offensive lineman, yet he has the hands to force opposing teams to honor his presence in the passing game.
The Chargers’ final coaching hire was Hal Hunter, who has yet to coach on the professional level. But back in 2001, Hunter was the offensive coordinator at the University of Indiana (http://indiana.scout.com/) (Cam Cameron (http://scout.scout.com/a.z?s=102&p=8&c=1&nid=1716328) was the head coach there at the time), where he worked with quarterback Antwaan Randle El, who won Big Ten Player of the Year under Hunter’s guidance.
Acquiring an explosive player like Randle El would be a coup for the Chargers, as he is a dynamic threat as a receiver, runner, returner and passer. If the Chargers would let Randel El throw like they do Tomlinson, they may win over the quarterback in him. Coming off a season of regression and depression, the Chargers could use some free agent help. If they want to have their way with the market, they will need their new hired hands to start pulling some strings.
I think that if we atleast get bentley, than we will a successful free agency period. It would also be great if we can get randle el with, imagine randle el throwing a pass to VJ for a touchdown. he bring more versatility to our offence and more excitement. what do you think about this article?

I like Lecharles,Demps, and possibly Madison as the top targets for the off-season. Brandon Manumaleuna would be great for the right price.

I would love to get Bentley. Brandon is a good blocking tightend and a good option at the right price if Peelle leaves. I am not that big on Randel El but as Boltfan NYC stated if we can sign Bentley then Randel El at the right price could be nice.

Only pressing person we should push for is Bently. And yes we could use a db or safety. But Randel El isn't the wr we need. We need a solid number one. Randel El is nothing but a complimentary piece to Ward.

I agree with you on agreeing with him. All of those guys would be awesome pickups except Randle El, who is overrated at best.

Randle El is going to be the Carlos Beltran of the NFL. I like him as a player. But as a #3, and a #2 at best. And I'm actually a fan of his, but I think a good post season (super bowl mostly) has inflated his money.

How about drafting Martin Nance, Derek Hagan, or maybe Sinorice Moss in the second?

1. Ko Simpson Lame USC
2.Derek Hagan AZ ST
3.Fred Matua USC

Randle El was a #2 WR on the Super Bowl champs but he cant make #2 on the Bolts?

I think Bentley, Madison, and Randle El should get long looks from the Chargers front office. Having the new coaches and a team on the verge of greatness could really influence Bentley and Randle El IMO.

Did New England ever have a vertical threat WR? No, but they had/have a lot of options for Brady to throw to that can make plays by being consistent. Randle El can be another playmaking option for our Drew. Imagine Randle El, Kmac, and Parker who can all make big plays and are consistant. Then throw in LT, Gates, and VJ and you've got a lot of cool toys. Of course, having all the toys is meaningless if your left tackle got beat and the quarterback is a scramblin for his labrum life. We don't need a high profile receiver......would be nice, but certainly not needed.

Good point. Plus Drew doesn't have the deep ball arm that would get the ball to a burner WR (from what I've seen). I like our WR combo right now and we could pick up a great prospect in 2nd or 3rd rounds.

GET BENTLEY!

I don't think it's arm strength so much as deep ball placement accuracy. It doesn't seem like when he throws a long ball like it's failing to get there, just that the accuracy of the throw is somewhat off. Hopefully after his shoulder heals he'll be able to work on that.

I agree it's not exactly arm strength. Its the way he throws it. He would kind of bullet it there (so its low and the corner can make a play on it) If he learns to lob it up and let it drop to the receiver he'd be good. That's what I hope he improves on most this offseason...the arched deep ball.

That would be a great offseason getting Bently and Randle El.

It would be great if we got Backus and Bentley...
