Anyone think it is a good idea to look at landing some relatively cheap free agents with experience in the defensive scheme? It looks like the Texans are moving to a 4-3 defense which could send some decent players that fit the 3-4 out into the free agent pool.

Here is a link to a post that has alot of info on the Texans cap numbers and possible casualties.

Texans | Team converting to 4-3 defense
Wed, 15 Feb 2006 18:06:53 -0800

Nick Schenck, of HoustonTexans.com, reports Houston Texans defensive coordinator Richard Smith is planning to convert the team's defense to a 4-3 alignment. Smith said, "We feel it's going to fit our personnel extremely well here. Also, we have the ability to be able to run some 3-4, which we will install. We think that's an advantage because this football team has been running the 3-4 for quite a long time here. Because of that, we feel it's harder for an offense to prepare for us. So right now we're building our library."

Good read here Igor. The texans could be the most improved team next year if they plan smart and have some luck, they can only get better. Dood who posted the thread in the link you provided did some homework there, kinda reminds me of your detail Igor…thanks.

How many players will we actually be able to get though? Landing Foley was gold, but I don't know how many more players the Texans have that we would actually want.

I think Travis Johnson will be a stud in the 4-3. I always see Babin as a 3-4 OLB, so I'm not too sure how he'll be affected by it. They spent a first rounder on him a couple years ago, in the same draft that landed them robinson I believe.

they are also going to have a scary offense once Bush comes in the picture, they can have Davis as the RB and Bush as a WR at the same time and do alot of PA to fake out the Defense and give Carr some time to throw.....they are going have a killer fast offense, Andre Johnson runs a 4.3, Jerome Mathis runs a 4.2, and Bush runs a 4.3. All they need is fix the O Line a bit and they will have a nice offense.

Houston's offense is going to install the Denver offense. One cut and go. Reggie Bush is DEADLY on the first cut. Bush on the stretch play (as long as his O-line can hold up) would be very effective.

So so true. You need a line to make the holes, to make the blocks... hell, it all starts with the line. Great line = winning team.

Not if Kubiak is taking Denver's chop blocking with him:mad:

I don't think people realize how productive Foley has been for us these past two years. He had a record 10 sacks in 2004, and 4.5 this year. Both beat all of his previous season respctiveley. I'm satisfied with Foley, but I don't know how good anyone else would be. Babin maybe, but they won't let him go.

You mean "zone blocking"... I get that all the time here in the NFC South with those dirty Atlanta Vicks and their cut-blocking. But hey, it utilizes the natural abilities of smaller more agile OL (as in NOT Fonoti)... even if it has to get a little dirty in the trenches... man that sounds dirty.

My detail has never been that good...and if I lucked into it once, I guarantee the post didnt look as tidy as that one does! Thanks for the kind words BC, and nice to see that we are both online at the same time for the first time in quite a while!

I think that the Texans have the roster and the coaching staff (and are in the division) to be able to turn it around a bit next year. Bush in the 1st and the best O line available in the 2nd and 3rd (at least) should be a HUGE step in the right direction for them.

As for them moving away from a predominantly 3-4 defense in to a 4-3, I think there could be some decent players that will fit our scheme that could be released to make cap room. I dont see any of their free agents that really tickle my fancy, but if someone like Weigert or Payne were to be cut, I think that they could help out our team with their experience (not that they are likely to get rid of Weigert at a time like this....but who knows what Kubiak and Sherman have planned for that O line).

If the Bolts arent planning on taking a back up for Jamal in the draft they should take a look at Junior Ioane. He tore his ACL a couple of years ago, but I think he is back up to where he should be, and has experience as a DE too (just in case!).
For the record, I also like Maake Kemoate from the Ravens to fill that role if he is released (Ozzie doesnt want him to be though).
