View Full Version : With all this cap money we better be active in free agency

Since it looks like we won't be spending any money on Drew and we seemingly have all of our key players signed up we better plan on doing more than just drafting people this year. We need to be active in free agency and try to pick up improvements where ever we can. I'm not saying panick and bet the farm but what's the point of being under the cap if your team can't get over a hump? I don't know how much we have left but I'd much rather try to get an O line player in free agency than drafting one, I don't know who's out there but we can't wait for a rookie to develope.

I sure hope so too Jerry. We gotta be active in FA in the OL and Secondary positions.
Hopefully...
1. Backus/Steussie/Salaam OT
2. Bentley - Center
3. Nate Clements - DB
4. Chris Hope - Safety
I know that's a lot to hope for, but 2 out of the 4 is necessary, 3 would be great, all 4 positions would be amazing.
I have a strong feeling we will get Bently. Not sure of the others but I would like more help on the Oline and secondary.

I would guess he'd get a bunch of guys that are reasonably priced. I'd figure he may spend a little more on Oline but that's it.

He could improve the Oline through free agency but he will probably also take a look at DB. We're real close to being a serious contender but we need safety and may CB help and anyone we draft would take a few years to develop.

And here's to hoping that there will be cap casualties like Chris Samuels as the Skins attempt to escape cap hell over the next 10 days.
I'll be damn upset if the Chargers aren't hugely active in free agency - regardless of whether they sign Drew to a long-term deal.
Read between the lines at AJ's press conference today: they won't throw crazy money at 30-something skill players, but I guarantee they'll fill the real core needs starting March 3rd. And it won't be the Steve Foley / Bhawoh Jue kind of signings.
Get 'er done, AJ!! :Bolt:

When have the Chargers ever been "greedy"? They've spent almost every dollar under the cap every year there has been a cap. Sometimes, of course, that money was used very unwisely.
Can you point out a season where the Chargers were "greedy" and hoarded money to put in their pocket?
I'll anxiously await your referenced response. :Bolt:

Joe, do you expect us to make a serious run at Bently? He would be a huge upgrade at a position of need, but is AJ willing to get in a bidding war (which in all likelyhood will happen) to get him? Personally, I expect him to be a serious consideration for us, but I'd like to get some more opinions.

to answer Bentley is a monster upgrade. He is a pro bowler and would make hardwick a backup... thus making us 2 deep... VERY good policy. Getting a guy like backus would be a huge upgrade too although he is the top tackle this FA market... getting a guy like Hope or adam arch would upgrade huge as well... combo of bentley hope and a good draft make us contenders... with either QB... Bentley... say Mcneil... Oline fixed!
Hope and a good young DB... cover 1 and 2s better// so on.
keep in mind the minute we bring in a tackle... Olivea is a GOOD+ guard... we gain 2 good positions and players in essence...for 1

I think no matter who our quarterback is next year (hopefully, hopefully, Brees) that we need to make sure he has a good O-line to protect him and a better defense to get him more shots on the field...along with maybe one more wideout to get open faster for him.....RIGHT!?!?!

No o-line?
And 2 Pro Bowl WRs to get 10 wins against this schedule - including 2 games against the soon-to-be-roster shedding Raiders?
Arizona, Tennessee, St. Louis, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and the 3 AFC West teams at home in 2006.
Baltimore, Buffalo, Cincinatti, Seattle, San Francisco and the 3 AFC West teams on the road in 2006.
I don't think those are necessary to get to 10-13 wins, but free agent signings in the o-line and secondary are an absolute necessity. :Bolt:

If the Saints don't franchise tag Bentley (where they'd have to pay him elite offensive tackle money), my guess is that AJ and Jack Henry will be on the phone one second after the free agency season opens on March 3rd. The Chargers will make a huge run at Bentley and I'd expect that there won't be a "bidding war" because the Chargers will make a very nice long-term offer for him.
If you were Bentley and had the opportunity to come out to SD from ruined NO, make great money for a young team that will be competing at a high level for several years minimum and play for the o-line coach who got you to multiple Pro Bowls at two different positions, would you jump at the chance?
BTW Ya think Lo Neal, LT and Gates might have been plugging the Chargers organization as they crossed paths during Pro Bowl week in Honolulu? ;)

I'm glad you think that, but I don't see it going down like that. I just can't see AJ making an eye-popping first offer that will make Bentley end his FA process early to come play for the Chargers. I think the first offer will be what AJ considers "fair market value" which will be a nice contract, but one that a desperate team might be willing to beat. Of course, location and the chance to be a big part of a SB caliber team just might nudge him over to the Chargers :).
I guess we will just have to see how it plays out. I think its a little better than a coinflip chance of us getting him.

Bad news: Abraham was Tagged
Good news: Pat Kirwin's article today on NFL.com states Bentley hasnt been Tagged yet
Good news: Bolts have more cap space than thought (approx $25m)
Bad news: Brees potentially not signed March 3rd.
Good news: There's still a shot to get him, if the "players" put the egos and emotions aside.
Good news: Shopping starts March 3rd (and who said guys dont like to shop).
Last: Does B.R. needs a new sidekick?

1. Bentley
2. Runyan
Any 1 of these would be a major upgrade.
Bentley could play center or guard, but it is my understanding he wants to play center...
Runyan would move olivea back to his more natural guard spot.
I'd be happy if either of these moves happened. :)

No one is talking about Koren Robinson a possible free agent reciver. After his character building first years in league, he mshowed that he may have the potential to be a #1 reciever. He was touted as that in college. Did he play with Rivers in college?
Hope or Chavous would suit me just fine.

Yes, they did - Robinson's RS sophomore (his last year) and Rivers' freshman year.
He has got stone hands, but he seems to have turned his life around and is great on special teams, making the Pro Bowl this year. Would love to seem the Chargers sign him.

Free Agents the Chargers should be looking at real hard-
FS Chris Hope (Steelers will try real hard to get this guy signed)
FS Adam Archuleta (If we don't get a shot at Hope)
OG Kyle Kosier ( I don't think Detroit can resign all their O Line FA's)
OT Tom Ashworth ( Did a good job protecting Tom Brady and is a team guy)
C LaCharles Bently ( Saints may tag him but if they don't I will take him over all FA's in 06)
WR Reggie Wayne or Antwaan Randle El ( Either one of these guys would be an upgrade for us)
CB Nate Clements ( Bills should put the tag on him but if not chuck some cash at him)
I would be happy as a pig in sh*# if we signed these 3 guys-
1. Nate Clements
2. LaCharles Bently
3. Adam Archuleta
That would give us-
LT Oben LG Goff C Bently RG Hardwick RT Olivea
CB Clements FS Archuleta SS Kiel CB Jammer

Set free: The Saints probably won't franchise or transition defensive end Darren Howard or center LeCharles Bentley, making them available in the free-agent market. Howard was the Saints' franchise player in 2005, but he fell out of favor as the season progressed. Bentley is one of the league's best centers, but the franchise tag for offensive linemen is $6.98 million. The Saints are reluctant to pay a center as much as a tackle, so Bentley might be leaving without draft compensation
I read this on ESPN. That is my hope that during the ProBowl, our players were talking and wooing some other ProBowlers into coming here to play.
Bentley is the first of many FA I want AJ to persue. If we can just get a few people into the oline mix. We can do some special things.

It wasn't just the Pitt game.
Hardwick is a very good athlete who is the Chargers best o-lineman in space. He can get out wide on screens and sweep plays when he's not lined up against a NT.
However, he looked like he was on skates in games against physical fronts, just as he did against the Jets in the playoffs last year. He needs to do some serious hard work in the weightroom this offseason and put on another 15 pounds of muscle.
He's a solid lineman and no matter what will provide a lot of versatility from the bench, but if the Chargers get Bentley, I believe he goes to center. Goff and Dielmann battle it out for one guard position, Olivea slides inside to take the other and Oben plays either right or left tackle depending on who they sign in free agency.
Now there's a strong, physical and versatile offensive line with a huge amount of depth. But back to the point - Hardwick needs to get stronger.

I don't think it's a matter of "supplanting" Olivea - it's bringing in an OT so they can move Olivea to the position that fits his strengths as a player and the position that he was projected to play in the NFL coming out of Ohio State.
The Chargers will bring in an OT in free agency no matter what the plans are with Olivea due to the uncertainty with Oben's injury. No way can they go into 2006 with the same OT situation.

iodude122,
I said Day 1 pick.
That means taking an offensive tackle in either round 1, round 2 or round 3.
It all depends who is on the board in Round 1. If the highest rated player is a DB, then that is who the Chargers should grab. Should that player be an OT, then that's who they grab.

Very nice job by AJ of signing all the key players. Besides Drew, there's not one player that the Chargers can't live without - though I'm hoping they can sign Peele, Caldwell and Leber.

Starting LT's last year: 1st round picks (18), 2nd round (6), 3rd round (4), 4th (1), 7th (1), and Undrafted (2).
Other OL positions can be drafted later, but most good LT's get drafted in the first round.
I think it would be a huge mistake to draft a safety in the 1st round instead of signing a free agent with the number of good ones available as UFA's.
The Chargers 1st round pick should be a LT (Marcus McNeill or Jonathan Scott) or a WR (Santonio Holmes, Chad Jackson or Sinorice Moss), but definitely not safety unless they fail at signing a free agent.

They like his locker room presence, but he's only a situational pass rusher in the 3-4. He can't play DE and he can't provide pass coverage. Considering that the Chargers already have a similar type in Shaun Phillips (who can pass cover a lot better than DQ), it's unlikely that they'd offer him more than the vet's minimum.
I bet they would like to have him back, but as a courtesy to a respected vet, they're allowing him to test the market to see if he can get more cash. If not, I wouldn't be surprised to see him sign in mid to late March like Jerry Wilson did last year. :Bolt:

There's nothing you said that is untrue Joe. He's a great locker room guy and a situational pass rusher.
However, considering we just signed Caesaire, the only other backups are Derreck Robinson and Ryon Bingham. IMO, DQ is better than Bingham and DQ would still adequately fill a backup role as a DE. It would be a courtesy to let him test the open market, but I would hate that.
Jamal, Igor and Castillo need spelling at times and I think Cesaire and DQ are the best suitors. It would be a bummer to lose this guy. Unfortunately, I can see DQ getting good looks from other teams with decent offers.

I believe they'll draft another DT. IMO It very well may be in the third round. They interviewed the Nigerian NT from Stanford (a multiple degree graduate, including engineering) at the Senior Bowl.
They can't use DQ at DE in non-passing situations. He isn't nearly big or strong enough to play the 2-gap technique that's necessary in the 3-4. He still may be back.

I agree he's not 2-gap stopper. His presence on the field is typically in 3rd down passing situations as you mentioned. Whether he's an adequate backup is probably debateable, but I think his presence on the team will be missed. If he's gone... all the best to DQ. A real class player.

Agree wholeheartedly!
Hopefully he'll be back. He's definitely a favorite of Marty's. :Bolt:

the New York media still has high hopes on landing PR. here is a quote taken from SI that is repeated on other sights:
According to someone with knowledge of the situation, several teams have expressed interest in trading for Jets DE John Abraham, including San Diego, Washington, Cleveland and Houston. Rumors have persisted that the Jets could get Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers or Redskins quarterback Patrick Ramsey in a trade involving Abraham.

it wont happen, so move on. With that said, IF a trade is worked out what do you give for Abraham??? A Second?
What about DQ? It would be a shame to let this guy go.
Like the other guys said, he's a little small for his position. He's not ideal for 3-4 DE and unless they want to convert him to OLB he's out of place on the team. Good player, but I think he should go to a team that plays the 4-3 and get the most out of him at DE.

You might want to read the previous posts on DQ in this thread. It was all spelled out.
DQ is a situational pass rusher and a team guy. He would still fit in as a backup and we need depth. I hope he's back.
