According to A.J. Smith, TE Justin Peelle will test free agent waters. I thought Peelle was a very good backup to Antonio Gates and think this move is a bad one. But if A.J. must, who do you think they'll bring to take Peelle's place? Do you think Ryan Krause and Landon Trusty are suffiecient enough to fill that roster spot? Do you think they'll look to the draft to shore up that thin position?

My thoughts are that they'll draft a TE but also bring in a free agent TE like Aaron Shea from the Cleveland Browns. A good backup whose willing to contribute in any way he can. He even lined up at FB in certain packages. Just a thought.

It's hard to say and it might be that Peele will still be available. It is possible that AJ thought he and/or his agent wanted too much to resign and felt we have or can get a good backup for less money. Just because he goes to FA doesn't mean someone will sign him. :Bolt:

Never liked Peele. I actually liked Josh Norman of a couple years ago. Ryan Krause could be the back up next year but I question his blocking.

Tim Day from Oregon looks to be like a good back up I hope we can get in the draft.

I believe IU also posted a story about the Chargers interviewing another LB at the combine.

During his NFL Combine interview, Ohio State LB Anthony Schlegel said he met with the San Diego Chargers at the Combine.

I think Aaron Shea would be a solid #2 TE. Also was thinking:

Christian Fauria (Pats)
Matt Schobel (Bengals)
Zachary Hilton (Saints)
Robert Royal (Redskins)

The Guy I'm really interested in is Hilton, bigger guy, good blocker, pretty good atheltic abilities. Also think Shea or Schobel would be solid fits.

Unlike WR's...I think the only way you can get a quality TE is not through free agency but through the draft, especially when your TE is an All Pro like Gates is.

I think if you were an UFA TE: I would avoid SD at ALL COSTS!!!

Thus I think we could get a late round TE...give him a contract that is almost like pennies and cents to Gates and hope he turns out to be better than what we paid him for!!!! As cynical as I sound, I'm sorry I'm just trying to see this in the eyes of a GM. Poor rookie but we all know what happened to Gates, right?? It was a stroke of genius!!!

Yeah we should just draft a T.E. it isn't like it is a pressing need. I'm thinking a blocking T.E. don't really follow the college players, so I'll have to leave that up to AJ. That's his job anyways.

Broncos | Shanahan wasn't a Putzier fan
Wed, 1 Mar 2006 16:41:03 -0800

Updating previous reports, ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports TE Jeb Putzier was not a favorite of Denver Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan. The team released him prior to having to pay him a $1.5 million roster bonus.

He Jeb, take a cut in pay and bring your skills to San Diego....I can think of a million ways to get back at Shannarat! My enemy's enemy is my friend

I agree, it would be a good way to get back at Coach Teflon in Denver. BTW good interview article with Ben Leber on profootballtalk.com

I like it...someone send that man a telegram and tell him how good the weather is in SD, and that he can have the last laugh on Shannarat if he takes a lil pay cut. I think he'd be a great #2.

...After getting hit so hard from Steve Foley in that last game, I'm sure Putzier would love to come here just so he won't ever get that hard again

I've been excited to see Krause play for the past couple years. The kid could play. He played WR in college and could be another threat in our passing game. I do think we need a good sized TE that could block in the draft cuz im not sold on Ryan's ability to block. Either way he's a threat.

I thought Krause was going to surprise some people this last season.....but injuries have really kept him down. I dont know what to think of Krause now....I hope he makes the most out of training camp, he looked like another red zone threat for sure, I just hope he can block a bit too.
As for a blocking TE, check out Kelly Griffeth on the roster...looks like just what the doctor ordered.

They'll needs a veteran and a rookie TE added to the roster. This team patterns its offense w/ Gates in mind and it's necessary to have quality depth at the position. I believe in Krause, but he's a WR by trade and I'd like to see them add someone who is known first as a blocker. Here's my favorite at the moment:

Dan Cambell 6'6 250lbs

Is an efficient blocker. Has good toughness and above average strength. Takes good angles and does a consistently good job of getting in position. He fights to finish and is feisty. Plays with a mean streak. Is aware and instinctive. Does a good job of releasing quickly off the LOS. Shows some good moves when releasing versus the press. Has an excellent feel for getting in his QB's vision and will do a good job of coming back to his QB as a receiver. He is a big target in the middle of the field. Very efficient and reliable as a short-to-intermediate receiver. He has adequate-to-good size but is by no means massive. He does not have good deep speed. Is not a threat to stretch the field vertically. Struggles to adjust to the deep ball and does a poor job of catching the ball thrown over his head. He isn't much of a threat after the catch and usually just gets what is available.

That isnt getting back at him.

Do you think Jeb Putzier has any knowledge of the Broncos offense? Do you think that Jeb has an idea of the possible blocking schemes that the Brocos O line likes to use? Audibles? Tendencies?
I bet he does....and I wouldnt like to see a million headlines about guys getting dropped for salary reasons at this time of year, and see one article that has my name and a little editorial about how my coach didnt like me much.

This thread is about possible backup TEs.....Jeb had a decent year on a team with 2 other better than average TEs in place. As a Bronco, you know the guy has learned how to block! There was also an attempt at humor in my original post that I dont think you might have noticed.

Im not all on the "Jeb Putzier bandwagon".........not all up in Jeb's Kool Aid.....not trying to say "War Putzier!".....

Just throwin it out there...running it up a flagpole and seeing who salutes.

Cowboys | Campbell doubtful to re-sign
Fri, 3 Mar 2006 13:26:52 -0800

Mac Engel, of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, reports Dallas Cowboys TE Dan Campbell is doubtful to re-sign with the team and will likely hit the free agent market. Leonard Roth, Campbell's agent, said there is "less than a five percent chance" that Campbell would return to Dallas.

Here's what ESPN's Scouts Inc. had to say about him. He's listed as 6'5 262 and has 7 years in the league. He immediately moves to the top of my list.

Campbell has good size and he has a "feisty" attitude as a blocking tight end. He has good upper body strength and he shows good explosiveness coming off the ball. He takes good angles to his blocks and he excels at coming up to the linebacker level. He has good foot quickness and good lateral movement and he works hard to sustain his blocks He has good use of his hands in locking on a defender and he is capable of driving his legs to finish his blocks. As a receiver he runs good routes and he can catch the ball in his hands however he is not going to be the vertical threat and he is not going to run away from you after the catch. He has difficulty getting separation out of his cuts and he lacks a burst. He is a good possession type of receiver running short routes and he has a tough time beating man coverage. Because of his size he can be effective in the red zone and possibly get mis matched versus some of the smaller safeties. As a pass protector he can re set his feet and he has the lateral movement to mirror and slide with a defender and he will stand in and battle the bull rush. He lacks the overall strength to dominate the bigger defensive ends and the best he can do is a stalemate in a one on one situation. He is not a big play receiver and his role on this team is as a blocking tight end in certain formations.
