i'm betting there's a 50/50 chance that shields retires... he was already contemplating it... this could help push him to retirement... but if he has another year in him... he'd be an upgrade for a year or so.

If my math serves me, he's only 34 years old. That's old for some positions, but guys on the oline seem to last much longer into their 30s than other positions. I think Shields would be a nice addition. If we could get Bentley at C and Shields at G, I'd bet we'd be running a lot more effectively inside!

It would be nice to get Shields. Looking at more cuts to come. Keeping my eye on the Redskins, because I know that they are hurting. Hoping someone like Samuels gets cut.
Most of all, I do like the Chargers to make a hard push for Bentley. Isn't this offseason fun(except for the Brees thing)???

If we can sign him to a 1 year contract worth 2-3 million then its worth it. Just to have him for a SuperBowl run, as well as possible help groom Dielman.

LT has already put up record setting numbers with a crappy line, LJ had a good 1/2 of a season. That seems like a big difference to me. We don't need to get into this again, so lets just drop it.
Bad, you might be right about that, if they decide that Dielman is our future at guard. If not, there will be some very good guards available when we pick in the 2nd round. If we go that route I would rather have him compete for a starting job with Dielman.
Another possiblity that has been thrown around the board is drafting a tackle and moving olivea to guard. If that happens I think the Shield signing would be unneccesary, although nice for a little while.

There will be a cap this year. 2006's cap will be around 94 to 95 million.
The 2006 season will be like any other season, aside from the massive cuts that are going to take place to make the cap.
2007 is the year that will be uncapped... but in an uncapped year, players will have to have six years of NFL service to become a free agent rather than four. So there likely won't be AS many free agents hitting the market next year. Though, potentially those that do, have the ability to make more... in my personal opinion, i highly doubt teams will throw money at players until they are sure of what the future of football is going to look like.
here's a good article that kind of sums a lot of things up:

from the article q&a i posted above.
SI.com: Are you saying that the NFL is not going to become like baseball, with tremendous difference in teams' ability to put competitive teams on the field?
KING: That's exactly what I'm saying. In baseball, the Yankees can spend $210 million on players, while a team in its own division, Tampa Bay, spends about $35 million. In the NFL, even if Daniel Snyder takes in $300 million over the course of the year and buys up five premier free agents every year, even the teams at the bottom of the financial totem pole -- e.g., Buffalo, Jacksonville -- will have $160 to $170 million of gross revenue to play with. Obviously, it won't be as egalitarian a system as the one the league has now. And it won't be as good a system, but we're not headed for any sort of football Armageddon. And don't let anyone tell you differently.

Actually Loweezy, players will be able to be free agents, but they can't become unrestricted until they have 6 accrued seasons, instead of the current 4. Otherwise they're restricted free agents. Just wanted to add on to what you said.

Shields might be willing to put off retirement for one year if the team he went had a shot at the Super Bowl. That would make us a good candidate, plus he knows the KC system/players, plus he has ties with Marty. I see it as a possibility if he's willing to take lower pay for a chance at a ring.
If he's the right price...............sign him, AJ!

Who the hell is assuming anything. I think LJ rounds out the top 5-7 RBs in the league. That doesn't change my mind that he is overrated. People look at his stats from last year and go "ohhh, ahhh" but they don't bother to look at why it's happening. The people who did that are the same people that decided Ruben Drougns, Olandis Gary, and Clinton Portis to a much lesser extent, were can't miss prospects.
For the record, I don't think Johnson could get 1200 yards behind our line being consitantly hit in the backfield. His game is vision and power, and it's hard to use either when you are hit right when you get the ball.
Please don't put words in my mouth. I never said Johnson was crap, or he would be a failure anywhere else but KC. I said he is overrated and nothing outside of a 1700 yard season with 20 TDs is going to change my mind.

well this stinks if its true from PFT.com:
ABRAHAM TRADED TO BRONCOS?
A.J. Vaynerchuck of JetsTV.com reports that the New York Jets have struck a deal to ship defensive end John Abraham to the Broncos (http://www.jetstv.com/) in exchange for a first-round pick.
We're in the process of trying to confirm the report.
The Broncos hold the 22nd and 29th picks in round one. Vaynerchuk believes that the 29th pick is being sent to New York.
Our guess is that the Jets might then try to dangle the two first-round picks in an effort to jump up even higher in the draft, possibly as high as the No. 1 overall spot on the board. The Texans could be tempted to make a deal, since it would enable them to snag a guy like tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson at No. 4, giving them another first-rounder later in the day.
NFL teams use a chart that applies point values to draft picks for trade purposes. We don't know whether, under the chart, a No. 4 and a No. 29 would be enough to justify a trade up to No. 1. It's possible that the Jets might have to throw in another pick or two, if they indeed intend to make a run at the top spot.
The Jets slapped the franchise tag on Abraham a week ago, and Abraham has made clear his desire to get out of New York. The Jets have been shopping him for the past few days.
If the report is true, the Broncos' decision to cut on Wednesday defensive lineman Trevor Pryce, running back Mike Anderson, and tight end Jeb Putzier makes plenty of sense. The Broncos needed to clear cap room in order to absorb the new deal that Abraham undoubtedly will sign with the Jets, after putting his John Hancock on the franchise tag. The Jets then would trade the new contract to Denver.
To avoid a cap hit for the Jets, the deal undoubtedly will include not a signing bonus but an option bonus payment due within a few days after the trade is consummated, putting the entire responsibility for his cap number in 2006 and beyond (if there's a cap) on the Broncos.

IMO any veteran FA looking for one last SB run would have to think twice about signing in SD if Brees is gone, its just too big of an uncertainty expecting to go deep in the playoffs with an inexpirenced QB. If I were on that situation I would rather sign with PHI, IND, PIT, NE; solid teams that have a experienced top level QB running. I know its not a one man show but i take the effort of all to win and the failure of one to loose.

maybe, but if we were to get our line better, let LT run loose any QB can play behind that , and our defense is still growing, with a SS or FS that is good and can stay healthy who no's what we can do, plus this isnt a 1 man show game , its a team game a good QB just helps
