The Chiefs started their salary cap purge Thursday by terminating the contracts of four veteran players: cornerbacks Eric Warfield (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=4445) and Dexter McCleon (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=3945) and linebackers Shawn Barber (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=4342) and Gary Stills (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=4725).
The moves cleared out $6.3 million, but the Chiefs have more work to do to get under the $94.5 million salary cap. They started the day $18.1 million over the cap, so these moves leave them $11.9 million over.

The Chiefs are in the process of restructuring contracts and considering other releases of veteran players.
Other veterans who could fall under the salary cap knife are guard Will Shields (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=2445) and safeties Jerome Woods (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=3607) and Greg Wesley (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=5114), but nothing is done at this time. yeah, its called being a raider! but the chiefs and everyone in the afc west except us will have issues with the cap and have to release key players. It is our division now I hope.

This is gonna be great for us if AJ can capitalize from all the FA's out there. I'm really looking forward to 2006 now. This should be a lot of fun to watch.

I undertand that all cuts made today have been nullified. Which would mean Sheilds is still a Chief.

It's up to him, after 13 years and 11 straight pro bowls, they want him to take a paycut, he loves the Chiefs and KC, and has said he wants to remain....so I guess it's anybody's guess......:( After all the changes in the last 3 years.. I just don't know if I can take this one..

Because the league and the Player's Association could not reach a deal, the NFl pushed the first day of free agency back to Monday so that teams could have more time to restructure contracts and release players

I've always liked Dexter McCleon, he seems to make plays and the prospect of him in bolts for '06 intrigues me.
