Apparently the Chargers have shown interest in LB Willie McGinest. No word on whether that interest is strong.

I saw this originally form Espn.com but I checked out the Boston Globe

"His heart is in New England, but if McGinest's body gets on the open market, he will find many suitors, according to NFL sources, and he will have a hard business decision to make. The Browns, Cowboys, Chiefs, Chargers, Dolphins, and Jets are interested in him. Some, like the Jets and Chiefs, have cap problems, but others, like the Chargers and Browns, will have money to spend because they are well below the current $94 million cap, which could drive up McGinest's price even in a difficult market, and drive him out of New England."

I would mind a leader like McGinest coming in for the right price, although we have a strong LB corps Already.

He's a Trojan. so it'll be sort of a homecoming.

Thing is that just because the report says the Chargers are interested, it doesn't mean much. We were supposed to have strong interest in John Abraham, but do any of us actually believe that was true?

Truth is that agents will say teams are interested to up value. We'll see what happens though.

I personally would rather go after John Abraham than Willie McGinest.
Only because we already have a great LB core and our DL could use a lil help, and Abrahams 10 sacks a year wouldnt hurt.

They wouldn't help considering Abraham can't play DE in a 3-4

I see it too. I think us and Cleveland would be his two top choices, but his former coordinator is up in Cleveland. Plus, he was a star in his scheme. Now, he's used less in Bean Town.

Does anyone have any idea who we are going to target at this point in FA?

AJ: We don't talk about our football business.

It's probably best that the Chargers don't divulge that information, because when things are silent , their better.

McGinest is a solid player and would be an upgrade over the two ILBs we currently have starting.

Cooper and Wilhelm are still RFAs if I'm not mistaken.

And in case anyone was wondering, if the Chargers release Godfrey, they save 2M against the cap.

Where would you put him? I don't think he'd see much time with our LB corps. I think McGinest is a good player, but he's old and he's not better than Foley/Merriman outside and not better than Donnie/Godfrey inside. He might be a slight upgrade from Godfrey in the form of being a little more of a playmaker, but I like the job #58 does inside for us and I don't see us spending cash on a guy like McGinest. He just isn't enough of an upgrade to warrant it, IMHO.

Dan,

McGinest is a 3-4 OLB he would have to fight with Foley Merriman and Phillips for time he is not a ILB. I would not mind having him as a LB coach but not a player.

I hope he does go to the Browns and take some of that cap money with him. Because the more money the Browns spend on other players, the less they will have for Bentley.

Get Bentley... our LB's are good... we don't need an old one to come in.

shut down corner? Don't come in here spreading lies. Ty Law led the WORLD in PIs.

very good? How much playing time did he get for New England? McGinest is one of the original hybrid OLB/DEs. Foley, Merriman.. yeah..

shut down corner.http://www.clublakers.com/forums/images/smiles/lol.gif (javascript:emoticon(''))

McGinest plays outside I guess he could replace Foley but I think he fits with Cleveland more. Id rather get Milloy or an O linemen.

Nailed it! There is a lot of talk of the Browns this, the browns that, etc. they don't have that much money to sign everyone. So Yes, PLEASE get Bently.

ESPN -

McGinest moving on?
<Mar. 3> Although he received a 72-hour reprieve when the start of free agency was delayed until Sunday night, McGinest knows it's only a matter of time before he's released.

"We didn't think they were ever going to pay me $7 million or $8 million next year," McGinest told the Boston Globe. "This last year [2006] was a ghost deal. It wasn't meant to stick. That's why we escalated the numbers the way we did. It would be great if they exercised it and gave me $7 million or $8 million, but I knew if it came to it, they'd renegotiate, release me, or release me and then do a new contract."

McGinest hasn't ruled out re-signing with the Pats after his imminent release, but he'll have other options as well. Teams such as the Jets and Browns, coached by former Patriots assistansts Eric Mangini and Romeo Crennel, are looking to upgrade their pass rush and could make a run at McGinest. The Cowboys, Chiefs, Chargers and Dolphins are also believed to be interested.

Obviously Mcginest isnt my first choice, but the guy has some serious upside. Mcginest is an OLB in the 3-4 and has spent many years becoming a master of that craft. He knows more about that particular scheme than anyone but Wade on this team.

Mcginest is old, but look at his numbers from last year playing in a depleted LB corps. Especially look at his numbers AT THE END of the season....this guy isnt slowing down, he is catching his second wind!

The thing is, besides RB and maybe QB right now, the OLBs are the deepest position. I do think the money would be better spent elsewhere, but if Willie finished his career as a Charger, I wouldnt complain a bit.

True. Godfrey and Edwards can't really stand up to McGinest, but really, shouldn't our Cap space be directed in other areas this FA?
