View Full Version : Brees Blowing Into Minny?

From profootballtalk, one of my favorites:
BREES BLOWING INTO MINNY?
Sid Hartman of The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports (sort of) that the Vikings are likely to make a run at Chargers quarterback Drew Brees (http://www.startribune.com/507/story/285681.html), who'll hit the market at the start of free agency.
Brees, per Hartman, has a great relationship with new Vikings personnel boss Fran Foley. Foley previously was the director of pro personnel in San Diego.
The challenge for the Vikings, however, would be to work out a trade for current starter Daunte Culpepper before pursuing Brees. If other teams chase Brees when free agency opens at 12:01 a.m. on Monday, the Vikes will have to decide whether to jump into the fray without a deal in place for Daunte, even though it would be an implicit admission to the rest of the league that Minny isn't serious about keeping Culpepper -- meaning that he'd be cut before his $6 million roster bonus comes due in the middle of the month.
But anyone interested in Brees should be damn sure that he's on track to be recovered in time to play this season. Recent reports indicated that his shoulder injury was more than a torn labrum, and that he also had a partially torn rotator cuff.

I saw this too. With all the teams interested in Drew Brees, there might be one team who will gamble and overpay for him.
BTW, since this isn't directly related to his contract talks, I am moving it into the Free Agency folder, where you will find the other "Brees to this team" rumors.

No doubt about it. He'll be overvalued somewhere else.
I believe its a forgone conclusion that he's outta here.

I don't get this from Minny's POV. Johnson has said he wants to be a starter, and they still have the Culpepper issue to deal with.

They wont say it publicly but Culpepper will be cut in mid March when his 6 million bonus comes due. They want to try and trade him to get something in return but the truth is that the new FO wants a new team with no headaches. How can come off your worst season as a pro, major reconstructive knee surgery, have legal issues from the party boat scandal, possibly show that your not as good a QB as people might think without a super talented WR to chuck it to when protection breaks down and ask for a 10 million dollar raise this season off of a contract that you just signed last summer? He wont be a Viking when the season starts. And I'm willing to bet that if the Vikes get Drew to agree to a contract that Daunte is cut the very next day. He's an egomaniac.
Now Brad Johnson makes zippy as a QB so he can go back to the bench and sulk if he wants because it isnt expensive to keep him on the roster whether he's happy or not. He's only one play away from being the starter, or its possible Drew isnt ready on time and Brad has to play after all. So its a win-win for the Vikes in this regard.
All my opinion of course, (the 10 million dollar raise is fact) but this is what I think and I share it with all of you to disect and discount as you wish.

That makes sense Spank. I agree with you about Culpepper being gone, I know they're trying to trade him, but if they can't do it I think he'll be cut. Either way he won't be wearing purple next season.
The Johnson thing makes sense, to keep him as your insurance plan, because we all know signing Brees requires one.
Minnesota's an interesting place for Brees too. Plug a good QB and a better WR in there and they have a good team.

here's another article, this from Bob Glauber of Newsday who says the Bolts are making a mistake in not resigning Brees (course Bob is the same guy who predicted a victory for T.O. in his arbitration case).

brees may fit well in minny. brad johnson has below average arm strength and did well under their system.
also, they have even more room under the salary cap than SD.
i also heard that daunte really won't be playing this season. it's an 18 month rehab.
finally, brees aint coming back to SD. why would he? he might not even start.
why wouldn't he go somewhere that pays him well and is given a vote of confidence to be the starter. (e.g. miami, minny, oakland even detroit because harrington and shawn king suck)

Its rumored that they will be aggressive in trying to sign Edgerine James once FA begins so they may have a RB to play with him.
As for TE they have a big fella named Jermaine Wiggins. Now Gates he aint but he can play. He's a good blocker and he makes 1st down catches on 3rd down. In the last 2 seasons as a starter for the Vikes he has about 140 catches for 1500 yards and 5 TD's. He averages almost 10 yards a catch and he has 60 1st downs. He's a player.
Remember when Gates first burst on the scene a few years ago and he would come in and make a great play on third down to get us a first down and then on the next play he would have a false start penalty? You could see the potential but man would I get frustrated with those stupid penalties. I was always thinking after he caught the ball, "Marty, hurry up and pull him before he gets a stupid penalty on the next play." It took him a little while to get to the point he is at now.
Wiggins is in that type of mold IMO. There is still some potential to be fulfilled with this guy.

Brees is likely on his way out, I see some teams offering him a lot of money (possibly Lions, Vikings, Raiders) and I really don't think that the Chargers are going to throw enough money his way. I know Brees said that he wants to stay in San Diego, but thee million extra dollars a year is pretty tough to turn down. It's time to move on without Brees, and with Phillip Rivers. I hope that the money saved by not resigning Brees can be used on some quality linemen...

If Brees does go to Minny than he'll have something there he didn't have here...a solid O-line to protect him. But he'll be missing something there that he didn't have here...the league's best TE, and a RB to carry the load.

Drew Brees to Nate Burleson and Troy Williamson!!! Troy was my favorite WR coming out of the draft in 05 and I was hoping to get him in SD but the Vikes beat us to it.
If Drew lands in Minnesotta - I wouldn't mind that at all. I'll make that team my best in the NFC. Brees will flourish in a dome stadium. He did in Purdue and he will in Minnesotta. Prove AJ wrong, Drew!

The stadium the Purdue Boilermakers play in, Ross-Ade Stadium, is an outdoor stadium and has been since it was built in 1924.

I thought he played in the Colts RCA dome while in college?? I stand corrected...either way, Drew will be awesome and bring that team to 8 automatic home wins year after year.

Well, I'd be really thrilled for Drew if he signs with the team that lands Vernon Davis--He will probably make Gonzalez drop to 3rd best TE

Davis is a big man. He may be the steal of the draft. Of course he's from Maryland :)
