FBI Investigates Merriman Kidnapping Claim

Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation are meeting today with San Diego Chargers security officials to review allegations that linebacker Shawne Merriman was kidnapped prior to Sunday's game vs. the New England Patriots. The FBI was acting on a tip from Merriman's girlfriend who said, "Shawne never touches me the night before the game because he believes it weakens him mentally. But Saturday night, he just didn't seem like the same man, I mean he went at me like a snake after a mongoose. When I saw the way he performed in the game, I knew that could not be my Shawne."

A spokesperson for the FBI's San Diego office said, "I am a Charger fan. And when Shawne's girlfriend called us her story made perfect sense to me. This had to be an impostor wearing #56. Otherwise, how come there were no sacks?"

The FBI said that a person of interest in the case is Harold Sneed, an English teacher at Boston's Betsy Ross High School. Sneed, who bears a strong resemblance to Merriman, was reported to have worn a #56 jersey to a Holloween party in 2006. The FBI said, "Sneed is an assistant coach on the Betsy Ross football team. He knows just enough defense to get by and that's what #56 did on Sunday. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure this case out. There is no question in my my mind that Shawne Merriman was not on that field."
