Packers | Whitticker could be on the hot seat

Rob Reischel, of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, reports <A href="http://www.kffl.com/team/17/nfl">Green Bay Packers OT Will Whitticker (http://www.kffl.com/player/12097/nfl) could find himself off the team before the 2006 season starts. Head coach Mike McCarthy (http://www.kffl.com/player/8304/nfl) and offensive coordinator Jeff Jagodzinki want sleek, athletic offensive linemen to fit their zone-blocking scheme. Whitticker, at roughly 340 pounds, does not fit their scheme.
This guy went in the same round as Scott Mruczkowski (http://chargers.com/team/roster/scott-mruczkowski.htm), is the same height, but is a bit heavier and started last year for the Packers. Isn't our scheme looking for jumbos cloggers? Could be a good pickup for depth. River's has a pretty quick release, so maybe guys large dudes with long arms could get it done best for him.

The Packers lost both of their excellent starting guards before the 2005 season. They're desperate for guards - so why would they be releasing a young guy if he had any promise whatsoever?
A 7th round pick who isn't good enough to go to training camp for the guard desperate Packers has no place in Chargerville. :Bolt:
As for wanting jumbo cloggers: I think the whole idea of the Chargers offseason is to have their interior linemen be more fit and mobile so they can utilize LTs talents to get to the edge on sweeps and screens as evident in Jack Henry's coaching with the offensive line over the past month.
Jumbo cloggers are a thing of the past in the Chargers offense IMO.

I'm not the biggest fan of our guards, but this guy would be a setback

I agree, I dont think he fits the philosophy of the scheme being put in place this year. I look for the OL to be more active and mobile this year than it was in 04 and 05.

I agree with your opinion. I think the Chargers are getting a little tired of watching div rivals get 1000+ yds with whatever RB is handy while the greatest talent now playing busts his hump for 1500. Blowing up safties and LB's with a lineman is a major asset if you can do it.

Good perspectives, ya'll.

arent bigger gaurds for passing teams and smaller ones for runing teams
(so they could lead block faster)

Lt is going to get the ball alot this year and we need gaurds who can move and pull and get out in front and lead the way for Lt so he won't be getting hit behind th line of scrimmage. That will save him a lot and protect him.

We need an upgrade in some way on the right side of the line at gaurd. Who's out there that could possibly help us out?

How come everyone is down on our Guards ??. I think Mike Goff and Kris Dielman did a good job as the starters last season. Maybe not the best in the league, but definitely not the worse, As for depth, does anyone know if Wes Simms could be a good backup ?.

not always. It really depends on what type of blocking scheme youre running. zone blocking = faster and more athletic linemen and i think its max protection or something like that where the linemen are usually bigger, stonger, and less athletic

IIRC, Goff even got a vote for All-Pro, by SI's Zimmerman

I think he will make the squad. I watch some games of his at OK and he was a sometimes dominate blocker. Moving him inside to guard will hide his only weakness in the speed rusher outside. He should be a solid backup and possible starter down the road.
