Browns' Winslow says it's him vs. Chargers' Gates (http://www.ohio.com/)
By Patrick McManamon
Akron Beacon Journal
BEREA, Ohio - Fans have heard all the talk that NFL games are never about one player facing another player.
Kellen Winslow seems to disagree. At least he does this week, as the Browns travel to San Diego to play the Chargers.
"I look at it like it's a heavyweight match," Winslow said Wednesday. "It's me vs. Gates."
"Gates" would be Antonio Gates, a former Kent State basketball star who took the NFL world into his palm by trying out for and making the Chargers as an undrafted tight end.
Winslow continued: "I want to be the best tight end out there. Got to do it on Sunday. Tony (Gonzalez) is right behind me. Gates is right behind me. So I got to stay on top."
By on top, Winslow does not mean on top of the list for receptions by a tight end.
"The best overall," he said. "I'm trying to be the best. I said I was the best. I am the best. And I'm going to prove it on Sunday."
Got it.
Gates took a year to get acclimated to the NFL game, then caught 81 and 89 passes with 23 touchdowns the past two years, which coincidentally was a time Winslow sat out due to injuries.
One of those injuries was caused by a motorcycle accident, and it did serious damage to Winslow's knee. In training camp, he said he'd never get back to what he was, and at best, the knee would be 90 percent.
Then he added that he felt 90 percent of him was better than any tight end in the league.
Has he heard about that remark from a lot of other players?
"No," Winslow said matter of factly. "Because I am. That's not being arrogant. I am. I know what I can do. They know what I can do. The defensive coordinator knows what I can do.
"They're not going to match me up man for man. They're going to double me. They're going to do what they did to Tony. They're going to try to double him on third down and in the red zone, and I'm ready for that.
"Double coverage can't stop me."
OK, then.
Sunday's game is a homecoming for Winslow. He grew up in the San Diego area, and his father had his hall of fame career with the Chargers.
He said he is not bothered in the least that Gates is gaining fame in his father's stadium and wearing his father's jersey (though with a different number).
"I got all the respect for Gates, but he'll never be my father," he said. "Nobody will. I won't. He's on a whole other level. He made the tight end position."
Winslow and Gates are two of the league's best tight ends. At 6-foot-4 and 260 pounds, Gates is slightly bigger than Winslow, who is listed at 6-4, 248 pounds.
Winslow leads the league in catches by a tight end with 40. Gates is adjusting to a new quarterback in Philip Rivers and has 32 catches - 19 in the past three games.
"I don't think we're alike at all," Winslow said, "except for the speed factor. He plays basketball out there. I compare myself more to a (Jeremy) Shockey."
Gates' basketball background has helped him be one of the more adept in the league at using his body to catch passes. Gates also seems to run more downfield routes, though Winslow showed what he could do against the New York Jets when he got down the field for a 30-yard touchdown reception.
By most measures, Winslow is having a very good season. But he said he's looking for that breakout game - and he showed how closely he pays attention to the league's other tight ends.
"I haven't had a 100-yard game yet," he said. "Tony's had two. I'm trying to get up there. I'm trying to have some touchdowns, not just one. I'm trying to be the best, like I said."
Winslow does not feel, though, that he has silenced those who criticized him for his training camp "90 percent" statement.
"Not at all," he said. "Just got to keep going. When you play for the Browns right now, you don't get a lot of pub. I don't even know if (people) know what I'm doing. It doesn't' even matter. I've got to prove it against a good team like the Chargers, the Ravens.
"I've got to ball out."

he's got a lot of talent, but he should learn to keep his mouth shut sometimes and just play, or at least wait until he's made a pro bowl or proven himself that he is "the best" in the league.

I've liked Winslow's fiery attitude, which I love seeing in players. He is one of the best TEs in the league. I don't see him as arrogant or cocky. He strives to be the best TE in the league. Every player strives to be the best at their position. He realizes Gates and Gonzo are on top, and he has to show he cna do what they can do to be up in that echelon. If he believes 90% on his knee is better than any other TE, he has to complete his mission and prove it. His attitude shows that he will do anything he can do reach that goal.

Its annoying when unproven guys try to go after the top guys. He can be running his mouth about being better than Todd Heap or Tony G but dont go after the best of the best which is Gates. This reminds me of when Vernon Davis was interviewed and said that he will surpass Gates as the #1 tightend in the NFL by the end of the season...we all know the validity in that

gates never begged for attention like this guy does, he didn't have to he let his play on the field do the talking and the attention came naturally when he dominated.
if he thinks he is much better than TG and AG i want to see it, i want to see him catch more than 10 TD's and 1000 yards in a season.
right now he has 3 TD's with 393 yards, that is hardly worth ranting and raving about and it is not even close to the numbers TG and AG has put up in the past.
to me, jr is just a wannabe WR premodana begging for attention....and until he proves otherwise thats all he will ever be, not that he ever will.

Totally disagree. Winslow has done nothing remotely close to putting himself in the same category as Gates and Gonzales. He needs to stop whistling in the wind and do some performing on the field. Even if he did that, talk would still be cheap. Walk it, don't talk it.

Browns tight end says game against Chargers to be personal challenge
By Patrick McManamon
Beacon Journal sportswriter
BEREA - Fans have heard all the talk that NFL games are never about one player facing another player.
Kellen Winslow seems to disagree. At least he does this week, as the Browns travel to San Diego to play the Chargers.
``I look at it like it's a heavyweight match,'' Winslow said Wednesday. ``It's me vs. Gates.''

``I've got to ball out.''

His dad must be shaking his head. KW is and was ALWAYS about class and humility. This kid's sense of entitlement has been with him since day one and I really don't know where he got it from. I can't believe his father instilled this into him.
The funny thing about all this, as has been noted, is this whole "Winslow v. Gates"... newsflash, "Warrior", Gates won't be on the field when you are. Christ Almighty I'm hoping for him to run a seam route and McCree knocking the living piss outta him.
I also find it amusing how he's pumping up his own stats... While 40 catches in 7 games is nice, the Browns really don't have many other options. Ruben Droughns at RB? Please... Braylon Edwards has a total of 56 yards receiving the past 3 games and Frye's thrown 11 picks so far. Can anyone here name ANYONE else on the offensive side of the ball for them?
I gotta believe that the kid is just stuck on stupid.
oh.. just had to add this last little bit... his junior year at Scripps Ranch, the team I used to coach beat them in the CIF Quarterfinals on our way to the Murph... He had 1 catch for 4 yards on us. After the game he was crying like a *****.

Totally disagree. Winslow has done nothing remotely close to putting himself in the same category as Gates and Gonzales. He needs to stop whistling in the wind and do some performing on the field. Even if he did that, talk would still be cheap. Walk it, don't talk it.
KW2 is a tool....he can't help the diahrea of the mouth.....that's what they teach at the U.

Another little anecdote from high school...while he was a senior at Scripps, I was a freshman, and he was involved in a brawl where he kicked a kid in the face who was on the ground and put him into a coma. It didn't get around to the media, so I'm assuming that the victim was paid off...shows the type of guy Kellen is though.
I heard the same thing

He's a chip off the old blockhead for sure.
At least, the father has the stats to back him up. What has the junior Winslow done in the NFL?. He referred to the upcoming game, as the 'clash of two heavy weights', referring to himself versus Gates.
Kellen Winslow Jr, a heavy weight in the NFL?. He is a trash talking jerk and needs to have that taste smacked right out of his mouth.

Gates may not be Winslow Sr. But not too many are like Gates either. After a few more ProBowl years, Gates will be the first Charger TE to get his number retired.

DutchCheddar: His dad must be shaking his head. KW is and was ALWAYS about class and humility.
I am not quite certain if the senior Winslow was all class & humility either. There is certainly a lot of bad blood between him and the Spanos family. He deserves to have his number retired and be paid his well desereved due respect as a football player, but I must refute you blanket statement above.

While Gates and Gonzalez are certainly the clear cut top tight ends in the league, despite his past outbursts and such, Winslow has been emerging as one of the top tight ends in the league himself. I'm pretty sure he leads all tight ends in receptions right now. As a person, I don't have a whole lot of respect for K-II, but as a football player he's the one that the Chargers should keep an eye on come Sunday considering that the middle part of the field in pass coverage is a weakness for our Bolts..

Time will tell on all counts. Right now KW doesn't really have the stats or time back up his talk. 6 games mean little. Let's see where he is in 3 yrs. I think he has real talent. He'll put up good numbers. The biggest questions - for how long? how good? when will he shut up?

Even though Gates is no monster blocker, K2 will come out way ahead in number of blocks missed that lead to sacks or busted run plays. Dude thinks he's too good to block and does it with all the passion of a kid eating brussels sprouts. Never realized how bad it was until I watched the Jets game on replay.

LMAO!!!, Kellen you just gave the chargers defense some motivation to knock you out. Not too mention Gates will get 140 yards receiving and three TDs vs. your 1 reception for 10 yards.

He's might be the best TE in the league at sitting on the bench with a broken leg.
Seriously, this guy isn't even the best at crashing a motorcycle. Big Ben outdid him by a long shot. Shut your piehole Kellen. If you want to talk to a REAL soldier, give me a call sometime.

people say and he also claim that he is very "athletic". well no duh. this is the NFL. and being a tight end means you have to be athletic. hes just another idiot claiming things.

Honestly, a lot of the bashing he gets is deserved, but at the same time give the guy some credit this season. He's putting up some good numbers with a subpar quarterback and subpar running game. Like I said earlier, he's leading all tight ends in receptions and is second in yardage only to Tony Gonzalez. He may be a punk, he may be a "soldier", but don't discredit him as a football player because watching him this season he has been pretty damn good.
This season he's showing that he's worth of the high first round pick that was used to get him and as a Charger fan, I will not overlook him. Our defense hasn't been very good against tight ends as of late and he's pretty much the only offensive player on the Browns producing [with Braylon Edwards being average after a hot start and Reuben Droughns not putting up the yardage like last season].
I don't like "the Chosen One", but he's an emerging player in this league and that's something you can't deny..

Thats the problem with your post, a LB hasn't been able to cover him yet. Remember, he's putting up #'s so far on the worst ranked O in the league!!!!!

Hmm.. I wouldn't mind having those kind of guys on my team.. Except they can get a bit out of hand at times.
