Lions crush Riders, advance to Grey Cup

Canadian Press 11/12/2006 10:06:23 PM

VANCOUVER (CP) - They were like wine and vinegar, silk and burlap.
On an afternoon when Paris Jackson was all finesse, Jason Clermont was brute force.

Jackson made two pretty catches for touchdowns and Clermont bulled his way to key first downs as the B.C. Lions mauled the Saskatchewan Roughriders 45-18 Sunday to win the CFL West Final.

The Lions will face the Montreal Alouettes in next week's Grey Cup in Winnipeg.

"The best thing I can do is make things happen when I get the ball," Jackson, the lanky wide receiver, shouted over the roar of 50,084 screaming fans as confetti floated on the field at B.C. Place Stadium.
"I got the opportunity. We play as a team, as a family."
Jackson, who grew up in Vancouver, gracefully made touchdown catches of 14 and 35 yards as the Lions outscored Saskatchewan 26-1 in the second quarter. He finished the game with five catches for 66 yards.

There wasn't anything fancy in Clermont's game. The big slotback made grabs in traffic, then knocked over tacklers like bowling pins to keep drives alive.
"I was able to go up and get the ball and big-boy some of those guys," said Clermont, who finished with nine catches for 98 bruising yards. "It feels good to get into a rhythm and into a game."

The Lions - who will play in their second Grey Cup in three years - hope to erase painful memories and frustration. They lost the 2004 Grey Cup to Toronto then were beaten by Edmonton, at home, in last year's West Final.
"We feel it's our year," said quarterback Dave Dickenson, who looked like a magician as he made the Saskatchewan defence disappear.
"We feel we are the best team. We have to finish it though. It doesn't mean anything if you don't win."
Montreal beat the Toronto Argonauts 33-24 in the East Final.

Dickenson methodically shredded the Rider defence, completing 27 of 37 passes for 274 yards and three touchdowns. He even showed some running skills, eluding three tacklers on one play, and sustaining another drive with a plodding 26-yard run.
"I felt comfortable with what I could do," said Dickenson. "I don't think they counted on me moving around."
Running back Joe Smith had 116 yards on 19 carries. He scored once on a five-yard pass from Dickenson and then on a six-yard run in the game's dying moments...

Notes: Dickenson's mother Sue, a Democrat, was re-elected as a Montana state representative in Tuesday's U.S. elections. ....Former Lions quarterback Casey Printers watched the game from the sideline. ...There was a delay in the first quarter when a fan ran onto the field and had to be taken away by security. ...

Thanks for sharing the article with us. :) :good: I remember he was a backup QB with the Chargers a few seasons ago. He didn't really have an opportunity to show his talent on the field or got much playing time for us, though. :(
