What a joke. Brandon webb won it with 16 victories. If there ever was a season where a closer deserved the CY award, it was this season.

IMHO, Webb deserved it. If I was voting I think I would give it to a SP 99% of the time over a RP. I know it's not easy closing out games. To replace Hoffman as a closer would be easier than replacing a #1 starter

No, to find a dominate closer like Hoffman is harder then finding a #1 starting pitcher. Why do you think so many teams last offseason paid so much money for closers?

Lets be real. Hoffman is a good CLOSER but he didn't deserve the Cy Young. I personally dont think any closer should get the award because they only pitch one inning a game! Hoffman blew some saves this year, more than any other year. I love the Padres but someone else deserved it other than Hoffman.

You don't know baseball. 46 saves is a lot and 46/49 attempts is pretty good. Hoffman deserved it more then Webb. Webb didn't even take his team to the playoffs. Hoffman won us 46 games and lost only 3 for us. The only pitcher I would have understood winning over Hoffman would be Carpenter.
It's a shame, but there is bias that favors the starting pitchers over the closers. I don't know how many more games hoffy has to save in order to get consideration.

Hoffman should have won it in '98 for sure... this year it could have gone either way. He'll win the Rolaids Relief award at least.

Seriously though, If Hoffman didn't win this year I don't think a non-SP ever will

I think he should have won it this year for several reasons:
1) It was a relatively down year for starting pitchers in the NL. 16 victories is hardly spectacular. If there was ever a year where a closer could have (and should have won), it was this year.
2) Hoffman broke the all-time saves record this year, which is a hugely significant achievement. All the more reason to bring recognition to the position with a Cy Young award, especially in this less-than-stellar year for starters.
3) He saved 46 games. It's not like he saved 30-40 games and was asking for a sympathy vote. He led us to our second straight division title and was the closer on the NL All-Star team (even though he blew the save in that game :/)

So with that being said, Barry Bonds should get the MVP next year if he breaks the HR record? The Cy Young is not a lifetime achievement award.

No. What I'm saying is that in a year where starting pitching was underwhelming, Hoffman had a stellar year closing (even without the record). But, the record just made this year all that more significant, and he should have won the CY.
If an NL pitcher had 20+ wins this year, we're probably not even having this discussion, but of all the years for a closer to win it, this should have been it IMO.

Gagne won it a few years back, he's not a starter. But he had an awesome season as well.

The "win" is one of the most overrated stats in all of sports. That's the only number you're looking at and that is one thing that is usually out of a pitchers control. Look at a guy like Clemens who will go out and give up 2 ER over 7 innings and get a loss because his week hitting team can only get him 1 run. Just like the only number you're really looking with Hoffman is his saves, when in fact I can give you a reliever that probably had a better year than he did.

he got robbed probably only because he lost the all star game.
