I was having a discussion with a fellow class mate. and we came up on the discussion of david beckham and his reported contract of 250mil/5yr deal and it raised a question for me of what athletes are the most over paid?

here are my examples....

A-Rod - 27 mil, hasn't helped the yanks win a pennant
Bonds - around 15 mil, seen as a disaster for baseball
Shaq - 20 mil, plays 2nd fiddle behind wade
Starbury - 14 mil, i don't even want to start with this guy
Ronaldo - near 20 mil, getting old and has gain quite a bit of weight.
i'm not even going to include hockey players because in my mind, they get paid too much for a sport that barely anyone in the u.s. watches.
i'll give mentions about tiger woods too....when you make close to 100 mil, even that is too much for the best golfer there is.

Does that make them overpaid to the other 15 countries that watch hockey?

If you ask "What athletes are the most overpaid?" without designating a country, and then dog hockey b/c of your perception of how the United States feels about them, you've thrown your point out the window.

when i said hockey i guess i should have stated NHLers since most other countries have their own leagues like Russia and their Super League. you seriously can't justify 7 mil salaries for hockey players especially since half the franchises lose money (one of the causes of the lockout)

Hockey salaries had major cutbacks post-lockout. They now make less than the other 3 major sports. And as much as the leagues in Sweden and Russia count for something, those players jump ship or get drafted over here, and they skate over pretty quick.

You're underestimating the market for the best hockey players. They're playing for fans in several countries, not just America and Canada. Ichiro may come here, but the only people watching him are Japan and the United States. Alexander Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin are much more important to legions across the world.

They deserve all the money they make, which is a lot less now than you think they make.

Anyway, my answer for overpaid is the guaranteed contracts that go to fatsos and losers than can't play in the NBA. Contracts for the great players are fine, but there are so many guys making money than can't do a single thing in the NBA. The Knicks have too damn many of them. C-Webb was one of them. NBA teams trading contracts? Horrible.

i respect your point of view and i guess i agree with most of it. coming from a canadian point of view i guess is that a lot of our small market teams lose money, eg. Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames. I think the NHL has to adopt revenue sharing like the NFL. and as long as they have arbitration, NHL salaries will continue to increase like they did before.

i agree with saying the NBA guys are overpaid. marbury and francis for sure. 115 mil payroll for a very sub-par knicks team? all i can say is wow.

Oh, I just noticed now that you're from Canada. I don't know why your name didn't tip me off! I'm rough on my geography of Canada, but that makes you an Oilers fan, right?

i am a huge oilers fan. most of us saskatonians are on the bandwagon for the oil or flames, what we have most in common is that we all hate the leafs and canadiens, but i have a soft spot for the canadiens cuz of their history and former dominance. who do you cheer for?

I'm an Avalanche fan, but I haven't been following the league so far. Now that the Chargers are done...damnit...I'll be following them.
