According to John Czarnecki of Fox Sports, the Chargers tried to hire an un-named coach to replace Marty, but the bid was rejected, as they couldn't work out the terms.

If he was really trying to break that story he would name the coach. Or dig the name up to solidify his story.

I doubt this is even remotely true.

If I were to guess anybody I would think Pete Carrol.

When I think about who could actually replace Marty, a VERY short list comes to mind. I hate USC more than any college team, but I fully respect the ability of Pete Carrol to mold superstars into champions.

Can't think of another name of who they would consider besides Marty

I doubt that's true. If so they sure didn't spend much time on it. Under these circimstances I would think it would have been tough to convince another coach to take the job anyway.

I was thinking Mora, who just signed with Seattle....

I read that story too. I agree that unless the writer can put a name with that rumor, it sounds like he is trying to stir up contraversy or sounds like he has inside scoop that he doesn't really have.

There is NO way it was Carroll. He wants complete control of a team, including GM responsibilities, which he would NEVER get here. I doubt this rumor is true, and like other have said unless this writer can give us a name it's useless and baseless.

Who in their right mind would pass up on being the head coach of a a team in the caliber of the Chargers to become the cooridinator of another team, albeit Seattle (which I am not diminishing, but still!).

I'd say that Jim Mora Jr would have jumped at the chnace of becoming the Chargers HC. Specially with the LT vs Vicks draft history of 2001 and Vicks eventual demise of Mora as a head coach in Atlanta.

What happened to reporting news, not making news? "reporters" should be fired for this kind of thing.

Chicken---t reporting by that Fox guy. No facts. No names. Make up a rumor and float it to see if it catches on. You suck, Czarnecki.

Best guy for next year is in there already. Now let us focus on improving our weak position areas in the draft and free agency.

I have a hard time believing the rumor from Foxsports.com is true, thus I wouldn't read too much into it. However, if I had to make a list, it would be:

1. Bill Cowher
2. Pete Carrol
3. Cam Cameron (Prior to his departure, they might have entertained this idea, however could not reach a financial agreement)

Cowher would be nice to see, however Carroll has done poorly in the past in the NFL. I don't think he would do well as it seems he does better in motivating college kids. I'm glad Cam wasn't put in as HC....I don't think he'll do well in Miami.

Agreed. All three cannidates are not a good fit in my opinion either.
I'm on the "Keep Marty" side of the house. He may have made a few mistakes here and there, but overall I feel he's done an excellent job.

I agree. The players all want Marty back too. That should count for something as well.

My guess is that they might have taken a flyer in bringing JJ back into coaching. There is a relationship between him & Spanos and would be an improvement, but he's got a pretty sweet life at this point & probably wasn't willing to give it up.

From what has been brought up here, I would think that JJ or Cowher make the most sense, as the Chargers were turned down.....That is if there is any truth to this report at all.....Which I also agree with what has been brought up here, Czarnecki should not be allowed to file such a poor report, with no backup, just float it out there....lame!

Well maybe....although if they get too comfortable with him it isn't necessarily a good thing.

some coaches are made for college, and some are made for the NFL...

pete carrol is made for college, not the NFL.....

i am so glad he is not the coach of the chargers.

Just a wild guess who the chargers had plans on. Cowher. Cowher still may be the guy they want next year. Thats why they want marty this year and out of here after this year. There definetly seems to be a plan on landing a new head coach. They are waiting on a certain coach to be available.

I don't know that Cowher would have taken this job had they fired Marty, don't forget they are best friends and frankly it's not like Cowher needs the money. Also it was said that Cowher wants a large contract and I doubt that this team would be willing to pay what he wants (not calling them cheap) I know that sounds like a contradiction but I think if and when Cowher decides to coach again he'll do it for a large contract and on his terms, he won't be a rookie coach or desperate for a job so I doubt he'd be trying to take over a team his best friend was just fired from.

Czarnecki is an idiot.

He's only making up this crap to cover his butt because his "you can take it to the bank" prediction that Marty would be fired last week blew up in his face.

The unnamed coach was me. I would've taken the job, but I've got these non-refundable plane tickets to Vegas that I don't want to go to waste.

Plus he wanted no say in the play calling. Frimples would be done after the opening pep talk.

un-named source? un-named coach ? Yea, sure.

I can't see this as being true. First of all, it would alienate Marty even more, something that is not needed at all. And second, wouldn't there be some sort of rule against negotiating with someone while you still have a coach under contract?

And as far as the Pete Carroll rumor, I would never see that happening with AJ around. Carroll is a great coach, don't get me wrong, but he desires full control over personnel decisions, something AJ would never relinquish.

Marty is the answer for now, and IMO will lead us to the promised land shortly.

I don't believe it but if so, thank God. You've got to be a complete moron to get rid of a 14-2 HC. How incompetent is the head office? Not that bad, i'll wager.
