Just heard it on Sirius NFL radio. Don't know if someone posted this already. I know he had surgery but wasn't this guy a beast a couple years ago?

I dont know if it is true, but the guy was an absolute beast with a huge contract (note the use of the word 'was').

Buccaneers | Rice cut
Thu, 26 Jul 2007 16:27:07 -0700
Adam Schefter, of the NFL (http://www.kffl.com/team/77/nfl) Network, reports the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (http://www.kffl.com/team/35/nfl) have cut DE Simeon Rice (http://www.kffl.com/player/1796/nfl) after he failed his physical with the team.
Maybe kffl got this right

I thought that they would keep him on to tutor Gaines Adams? Surprised by this move, but I respect their desire to get younger.

It's Adam Schefter of NFL Network who got it right - if he's right.
All KFFL does is post what real news agencies report.
By all means, let's spend millions bringing in an aging 4-3 DE who doesn't fit into the 3-4 scheme and who couldn't pass another team's physical!! :LightsOut:

A little comparison .......
Simeon Rice (http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/4151) - 6'5" 268 lbs - 33 years old
Igor Olshansky (http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/493022) - 6'6" 309 lbs - 25 years old
Luis Castillo (http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/493022) - 6'3" 290 lbs - 24 years old (next month)
.... and just one more comparison .....
Shawne Merriman (http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/416752) - 6'4" 272 lbs
Shaun Phillips (http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/493029) - 6'3" 262 lbs
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Simeon Rice is far too small to play DE in our defense, and is roughly the size of our outside linebackers. Yet, with a dozen NFL years, and an aging body, there is no way he could effectively transition to OLB.
He's a "name" ..... a "flavor of the day" ..... but he'll never be a Chargers player.
a pass rush specialist doesnt really need a position...just bring him in and line him up wherever in nickel and dime situations...put him in 3 point stance on the line...this is what we would occasionally do with SP alot in his second year, when he was a situational player and he got like 6 or 7:LightsOut: sacks
I saw this this morning...and I just knew someone would say "Let's pick him up!" Idiots...gawd!!!! Our roster is already overloaded, and our finances are just fine w/o adding unnecessary big named players that haven't done much for the last few seasons. Give me a break...close thread...
Last year he did have a down year. te year before he had 14 sack. He will be a good addition to some 4-3 team that needs a situational pass rusher but not our team.
well, I'm sure he can't be that great of a help to any team at the moment if he can't pass a physical. A guy like him relies on his motor alot, if it aint cranking, then he wont be that effective. Maybe by midseason or by next year he will be able to get back to where he needs to be physically to play effectively.
Meanwhile in Denver, the Donkeys place a call to Rice's agent..... :p
Whoever wants to sign him is just antsy that AJ Smith has never made any big name signing. I remember there were rumors that we were going to trade the 1st overall pick (Rivers year) to the Bucs for their 1st rounder, a few other picks and Simeon Rice. Back THEN I would like to see Rice in an SD uniform because we were just beginning to restructure. A truly educated San Diego Charger Fan would know that there is no room for Simeon Rice on this team. The only way I'd even consider bringing him in is if we had injuries and AGB, Steve Foley decided they were done with football and if he would take the Veteran Min and even then I would STILL be shaky on the move. Hes too old and does not even fit in the system and I doubt he would want to learn the OLB spot for the Vet Min.
Why not?
Because the Chargers play a 3-4 defense, not a 4-3.
Rice would have nothing to offer as a mentor for veterans Castillo and Igor (who are mentoring other defensive linemen) - both 300+ pound defensive ends that is a mandatory requirement to play the scheme.
Rice is a 265 pound 4-3 speed-oriented defensive end who no longer has speed as knee injuries have apparently finished him off. He couldn't pass the Bucs team physical due to his knees being shot. He knows nothing about playing in the 3-4 and would literally get killed attempting to play the position.
Coming from a fan. Remember that. You should be a coach. I mean, you apparently know everything about the game of football and different schemes.
I don't need to be a coach to know about the Chargers 3-4 scheme. As a fan, I'm making my observation.
Simeon Rice can't play a 3-4 DE.
It's actually a pretty simple concept. I don't know everything about the game of football, but I don't need to know everything to realize that a 265 pound player cannot play DE in the NFL in the Chargers 3-4 scheme.
How come 265 lb tight ends don't simply move one step over and play tackle?
You don't have to be a coach or an "expert" to know there's a fundamental difference the needs of those two positions, which is why tackles generally go 310 lbs or more. You also don't have to be an expert to know that in a 3-4 defense the ends are much closer to tackle-size than they are to LB size. When he was in his prime Rice might have been able to play weak-side LB in our defensive scheme...
nah son, looks like everyone on this thread took care of you. What Simeon Rice and the tandem of Igor and Castillo do entirely different things besides play football. All of the down linemen in our defense might as well be all Defensive tackles and Rice doesnt fit that build.
Steve Foley is done...he is going to retire and be done almost for sure (but if he feels like he wants to give it a shot, which I am not sure would be possible, and tries to come back he will be nothing). I loved Steve when he was here, but I have some inside info on his condition and it was not good from the very beginning and is still no good now. Also, I was wondering if anyone knew when his trial versus Coronado and Mansker was, and if it was sealed or open to the public?
There won't be a trial until Foley files a lawsuit against Mansker and the City of Coronado. To date, I don't believe
Additionally, a trial date isn't set in civil court proceedings until discovery and pretrial motions and procedures are well underway.
If there isn't a settlement (I'd imagine that a settlement will be the likely outcome), a trial likely won't be set for a date any earlier than a year from the date that Foley files the action.
That's not KFFL who got it right.
It's Adam Schefter of NFL Network who got it right - if he's right.
All KFFL does is post what real news agencies report.
Adam Shefter also reported the reason given for Simeon failing his physical with the Bucs was a shoulder injury. I assume he elected to let it go untreated hoping it would get better on its own - but not a good thing to "assume". He was already having problems against the run and was turning into a pure pass rushing specialist IMO. ;)
Apparently the Giants are thinking of having a look (http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/2007-07-29-3543112496_x.htm) at him due to Strahan holding himself out of camp while "deciding if he will retire".
Alright since I just MUST draw it out for you like I would for a child... Castillo and Igor play a completely different style than Rice. Also quit putting words in my mouth son... I said "What Simeon Rice and the tandem of Igor and Castillo do entirely different things besides play football." All three do play football... lets agree on that.. I never said they "do more" just DIFFERENT THINGS.. Igor's claim to game is that he can stuff the run... can Simeon Rice make that claim? Whats he gonna do? Teach Igor how to Pass rush when hes clearly not in a pass rush mold? We have Shawne Merriman and Shaun Phillips to take care of the pass rush... Luis Castillo doesnt need Rice to teach him how to Finesse Rush and beat people off the edge.. thats not Luis' game.. hes powerful and has deceptive agility and thats what makes him such a threat inside. Sit down... go home
I hope everyone who think that Rice should be a Charger is just joking. He could not teach our DE anything. <---- That is a fact. They have a mentor his name is Jamal Williams. I am sure if they had any questions Big J could tell them exactly what they need to know.
"Don't let that guy in front or you or to your left or right push you around."
WOW!! I just had an out of body experience I just thought precisely what Jamal Williams would tell Igor about playing DE in the 3-4 scheme.
Also Rice as a OLB/Pass rush specialist wouldn't be that great because that would mean one of best pass rushing would be off the field on 3rd down. If I was the opposing team on 3rd down I would just run right at him because is as consistent as diarrhea against the run. He is too scared to stop somebody like Larry Johnson or Lamont Jordan the only reason he is still playing football is because he was one of the best at rushing the passer.
On a side note the release of Rice might also mean that Gaines is ahead of schedule.
My roommate's a huge Bucs fan, and he's kind of on the fence about the whole thing. Rice failed his physically initially, then passed with another doctor. I guess due to the $10 million cap hit, they decided to cut him.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Defensive end Simeon Rice (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/player/70820)'s tour of NFL teams brought him to the Tennessee Titans (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/team/67047) headquarters on Friday.
Titans (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/team/67047) coach Jeff Fisher is expected to talk with reporters after an afternoon practice. But Fisher said Thursday if Rice visited, they would give him a physical. The Titans (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/team/67047) had 26 sacks last season, a big drop from 41 in 2005.
Tampa Bay waived the 12-year veteran because of an injured shoulder last week. Rice, whose 121 sacks are second only to Michael Strahan (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/player/70337)'s 132 1/2 among active players, took a physical for the New York Giants (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/team/67056) on Wednesday and met with team officials.
