Switch paid off for Chargers' Chandler
During his freshman season at Iowa, Scott Chandler didn't catch a single pass. Yet he finished his career as the second-most-prolific player in school history at his position. (North County Times) More... (http://www.nctimes.com/articles/2007/08/23/sports/professional/chargers/20_21_318_22_07.txt)

I think he is a solid all around player that reminds me of todd heap. He is tall and seems to have good hands and he seemss fast enough to make plays in the slot. we should use him on short yardage plays where gates is resting and when 86 is blocking.

I caught a lot of Iowa games and he bailed Drew Tate (the QB) out alot during the past 2 seasons. I didn't understand why we needed so much depth at TE when we picked him up, but I did think going into the draft that he was very under rated at his position. If he develops as a good blocker he could very well be a Todd Heap/Mark Bruener type of TE.

I'm from Iowa and see every Iowa game. While he is not as fast or quick as Dallas Clark was, he was still a big part of their Offense last few years, will be a good # 2 TE in this league

I am really impressed with this guy, I hope he makes the team, otherwise someone will snatch him up in a heartbeat

Chandler makes the team. He's already shown more than that 3rd TE we had last year: Griffeth.
The TE trio of Gates, Manu, and Chandler will be the best in the NFL this season.

Yeah. Because of Manu's play last year, and the picking of Chandler, we were able to release Krause and Shea in the offseason with no regret.

I thought Krause was a good player, but I guess he rubbed the coaches the wrong way and then had some off the field problems to boot, I hope he makes a career for himself in cleveland

Well, other than his untimely drops, and frequent injuries, he was great. :LightsOut:

Chandler knows his weakness and knows his strengths however is "I'll do whatever it takes to help the team" is his best asset.

Krause was the man, should have replaced Gates!

Heh.
Although, Landon Trusty from the 2005 preseason was the one I was hoping we'd keep. He was Chandler's size: 6' 7" 265 lbs. Remember that 2005 preseason game versus the 49ers where Cleo Lemon and Trusty hooked up for some amazing plays?

Yeah. The local announcers were Billy Ray, and some other guy I can't remember now.
Billy Ray was remarking that "Trusty is living up to his name!" :LightsOut:
I pulled my VHS recording of that game out of my archives and watched it a couple of weeks ago, before our first preseason game.

I have to admit that watching the first game where he caught four passes that I thought that he looked very confused. Of our first several draft picks I thought that he might be one that could get cut. Remember at the end of the game when he ran the wrong route leading to Seattle's final interception. Compared to Nanee and Weddle, Chandler didn't look too good to me. But the catch in the right corner of the end zone against St. Louis where he reached up and grabbed the ball out of the air showed me that he has good hands.
And it seems that once he understands his routes that he's a good a fluid route runner for a tight end, thanks to his previous experience at wide reciever.
One other thing pertaining to Chandler, and in relationship to Gates. When Gates came in he wasn't too good at blocking, but what set him apart was his size, pass catching skills, and use of his body to shield the ball from defenders so that only he can make the play on the ball. Well, Chandler has better size than Gates. He obviously has good hands. And while his blocking skills need to be worked on, he may be ahead of where Gates was in his rookie season as far as route running, pass catching, and play making is concerned. It will be interesting to see how Chandler develops.
