please add here, as I think we will be shopping for Philips next backup, unless Charlie can pick it up.

Looks like a lot of third string QBs. Someone will give Grossman and Lemon a good size contract because of their recent starting experience. Maybe we can bring Flutie out of retirement

I Dont Know If Everyone Has Heard, But Chad Johnson Wants Out Of Cinci!!! Chargers Have To Pick Him Up Or Get A Good Trade For Him. Just Imagine Chambers On One Side And Chad On The Other. And Having Jackson As A Slot Receiver Would Be Nice!!! We Would Be The Parallel To The Patriots Wr's

Chad Johnson wouldnt work out for us. He wants the ball alot and we are team that rely's heavily on our running game. We also would be passing to Gates most of the time. I just think he would not work for our system.
McCown would make a great backup.

maybe, mccown.... I would really like a decent vet, like a Kurt Warner what is his situation? also, maybe...a cast away....or cut hit.

with whitehurst going into his third yr next yr I would look for a 3rd string QB which would be less money. none of the present guys on that list intrigue me a lot. maybe AJ will go the draft route to fill that spot
and O'Connell out of SDSU has some promise

What about culpepper, grossman, or mcCown those 3 seem pretty decent...

That seems like a likely scenario. Mark Brunell is schedule to make $5mil next year and will probably be cut. Chris Simms doesn't appear to have a future in Tampa and will probably be let go. I doubt he'll get a shot at starting somewhere, but he might be a good cheap option as a backup. And he has playoff experience, which is a plus. We could also lure Jake Plummer out of retirement

Here is a good list. Basically Anderson could be at the top. I also think Kurt Warner will be looking for a home

Of the guys on that list I like McCown the best, since Anderson is going to be extended by Cleveland. Dante Culpepper would be a cancer, and Grossman doesn't have "it". I would be scared about the Chargers winning with Grossman at QB, even as a backup.

Who knows? Before the season, people think Moss is not a good fit...The rest is history as they say...
If we somehow win the SB or getting to the AFC Championship game, we will attract alot of good players like CJ who want to play for us for a ring.
I don't think a WR is our main concern right now....A top flight SS like Bob Sanders (I know I know he is no longer be available) would be nice.
Chambers will be even more in sync with Rivers next season and the same with VJ and Buster Davis...
But hey, if the deal is good and CJ really like playing here, why not?

CJ is under contract through 2011. Are the Bengals going to cut him? Don't think so.

1. Volek walks
2. Whitehurst is Rivers backup
3. Draft Josh Johnson (USD) or Joe Flacco (Delaware) as the 3rd stringer

Probably is time to promote Whitehurst. Hopefully he tears it up in preseason and mop-up duty next year so we can trade him for a first day draft pick.
If they do want to bring in a Vet, I'd love to see us throw a 5th or 6th round draft pick at the Cowboys for Brad Johnson. He had a pro bowl season playing for Norv in Washington, has a Superbowl ring from Tampa, and would be the ideal mentor for Rivers.
Doubtful that anyone we take in the 5th or 6th round even makes the team, so why not use that pick to lock up Johnson for 2 years? God forbid, if Rivers has to sit for a crucial game next year I'd feel a lot better with Johnson at QB than Whitehurst, Grossman, Lemon, or even Volek for that matter.

That's one of the best ideas I've heard regarding a seasoned backup for Rivers. I like Volek, but if he walks, and he probably will, Brad Johnson for a 5th or 6th rd pick would be great .

Forget Johnson, I have a dead grandfather who'll be willing to play for half the price.

At 39 he's no spring chicken, however that's only one year older than Favre, and 5 years younger than Vinny Testaverde who won some games for Carolina this year. Johnson has 2 years left on his contract with Dallas, so that's probably a perfect contract for us to take. Our window for a Super Bowl with LT is probably about 2 years.
Question is, will Dallas give him up? Clearly Romo is not a one hit wonder. They have no QB listed as #3 on the depth chart, they have a rookie named Richard Bartel on the roster, he's probably Scout team fodder. We'd have to make it worth their while, but Johnson would be a great fit in Norv's offense.

I would not mind at all if the Bolts got Grossman, provided he signed for a decent price. Lemon would be nice as well. If not, Hopefully Smith finds someone in the draft.

Grossman would be the last QB I would want to see,
Lets move Whitehurst to the #2 spot, We know if Rivers can stand he will be playing. Our 3rd QB will only need to be able to hold a clipboard. Take care of this latter in the draft.
I would much rather see any money that AJ spends go into the O-line or d-backs.

Grossman would be a horrible back-up QB IMO. If a back-up is ever put into a game he is expected not to make many mistakes or any at all. The back-up must not force balls which will hurt the team. That does not sound anything like Grossman. He has shown he has plenty of potential but he shows he makes way too many mistakes and forces too many passes, something that is not smiled upon when it comes to a back-up QB.

Perhaps Norv could work with him as he is credited for his work with Quarterbacks....Grossman is about as hot and cold as a QB can be, with the right coaching he still could turn into something special.

Why would we want Norv to work with Grossman?
Rivers is our QB end of story!

You can never have enough talented QB's on the roster.

True,
But I would want Norv's time spent with Whitehurst.
Grossman would be in his 6th year and would want too much money.
If we pay for a vet he has to be ready to walk onto the field and play if needed.
Good thing this is AJ'S call, I say he will not sign Grossman.

If Volek walks away in FA we'll bring in a vet Qb, even if Whitehurst is the #2 guy. That's because Rivers may or may not be ready in September. You don't enter the season with one Qb and no experience behind him.
Lemon is a good fit and knows our system. That's the guy I would go after if I were AJ. But I'm not.

Kevin O'Connell of SDSU or Josh Johnson of USD...I think either of them would be more than capable. :helmet
