Looks like the club and Clark have agreed on "the basics" of a contract worth approx. $900,000 for one year...still working working out the details though

I have to say that I really like this move. A veteren presence on the bench, not mention a Padre killer is now on our side (something CY should be happy with! :)). He's proven to be clutch, and I'd have more confidence in him when an important pinch-hit opportunity presents itself than Termel Sledge...:D

The Padres and pinch-hitter/first baseman Tony Clark have agreed to the basics of a one-year contract worth in the neighborhood of $900,000, but it may take another day or two to work out the details.

“It's looking good,” Clark's agent, John Boggs, said yesterday. Padres General Manager Kevin Towers also expressed strong optimism.

For most of the offseason, the Padres and several other clubs assumed Clark would sign for a fourth consecutive season with the Arizona Diamondbacks. But a snafu made Clark available to the buy-low Padres at a reduced price.

Earlier this offseason, Arizona offered a two-year deal worth $3 million to Clark, a former San Diegan (Christian High) who spends his offseasons in northwest Phoenix. Several Diamondbacks players had described Clark, 35, as a leader for a young Arizona club that won the National League West last season. In two of his three seasons with Arizona, Clark returned good value.

But negotiations fizzled, and midway through the offseason Arizona's offer disappeared, to the apparent surprise of Clark's camp.

Clark, a switch-hitter, batted .249 with 17 home runs in 221 at-bats last season. He was far more of a factor against right-handed pitching, batting .254 with 15 home runs in 189 at-bats. Against lefties, he got only 32 at-bats, batting .219 with two home runs and nine strikeouts.

Sweeney won't be a padre...he signed with the A's, so I'm sure that we will sign Clark now

I like this move. He's a pretty good bat off the bench with some serious pop and has proven to be clutch in these situations, especially against the Padres.

San Diego boy too, Bolt Cola...

I think it's a very sad thing that Sweeney played in KC his whole career. Just think of what a guy like that could have done for a team like the Pads over the years!

Don't get me wrong, I think it's honorable to stay with one team; but in KC? Dude must love his BBQ ribs!

And, in case you're wondering, I think Tony G's nuts for having stayed with the Chefs his whole career. (Of course, part of that is because he's been a pain in the arse to the Bolts...)

people called tony gwynn crazy for staying in sd his whole career too

did you not read the first post? I can understand you wanting to raise your post count but this thread is a bit on the old side. We signed him for what we thought would be his bat off the bench

That would be awesome...considering that might be the total number of at bats he even gets with Adrian playing every day at First.

Clark, now Floyd... have the Padres learned yet that they're wasting their money on these over-the-hill vets with nothing left to offer?
