No football during the summer, this is the second best thing to it. I've been a die-hard Lakers fan since I was 12, even though we had our sucess in the past decade, this has to be the proudest I've ever been as a Lakers fan. No basketball in SD, who do you guys root for?

Anyways, go LAKERS! in 6 games!

i hope the lakers win for a couple reasons

1. pats fans will hate it

2. it will cause shaq pain

3. i've thought for a while , that phil jackson is one of the best coaches of all time

i think he's an obscene 9-1 in finals

is that right?

that's insane

I cant stand the Lakers either. I wish they had lost to the Spurs. Now if they win the championship their fans will hail them as the team of the decade over San Antonio, and Ill have to hear all about it.

But even then Id rather see the Lakers win. If only to rob joy from the hearts of Boston fans. I mean really, the Red Sox won the World Series, the Pats made it to the Superbowl and now this. Its too much of a good thing for arrogant fans. Other cities are more worthy of a championship team, even a h*llhole like LA.

A man after my own heart. There were sooo many other teams I wanted to win the championship this year but one by one they were knocked off (Utah, Phoenix, Houston, Cleveland, New Orleans, Detroit). All those teams were more deserving imo. But it didn't work out that way. Instead, Stern gets his dream and I get a nightmare. Who do I root for? The selfish a-hole Kobe to win his fourth ring or the entire m******* population to celebrate a second championship in the same year? Tough choice.

I don't really follow basketball. I feel some vague sense of affection for the Lakers because I was into them when I was little, and they are the hometown team in Souther California.

More than that, I just like seeing Boston teams lose. I really would like to see the Celtics fall flat on their faces after dominating all regular season.

Lets Go Lakers!!!! Been our team forever. Its not all about Kobe, we have seen the rest of the younger players grow up and play great bball.

how are you going to say odom & gasol deserve a ring (when KG, Pierce, and Allen are on the floor)? i believe boston deserves it more. And i do believe the lakers have earned a shot at the title this year and kobe and phil should get ANOTHER ring. But the Big 3 deserves it more imo.

i honestly do not care who wins. like someone said on pg. 1, just hoping for a great series. GO CHARGERS.

Sure... have KG and Ray Allen abandon ship and scurry over to the Celtics. Of course they deserve it more.

Does today's football "vaguely resemble" the past when the plays were all run/option based from the wing formation, goal posts were in the end zone and the guys wore leather helmets?

If football players didn't have to wear a structured uniform, how would the players dress?

Since the arms of Tomlinson, Merriman and many others are covered in tattoos, does it make them "glorified thugs?" And are players like Rivers 'redeeming' them somehow (and yes, I am going exactly where you think I am)?

That's why I hate this argument. Sports and those who play them evolve both micro and macro.

Apples and oranges, your trying to compare 2 different things.

Doesn't matter. The NBA has rules regarding uniforms too. For example, you cant wear your shorts too low.

Since the arms of Tomlinson, Merriman and many others are covered in tattoos, does it make them "glorified thugs?" And are players like Rivers 'redeeming' them somehow (and yes, I am going exactly where you think I am)?

It's not the tatoos that have anything to do with being "glorified thugs". It's the attitude of the person. You find better characters in football than you do basketball.

That's why I hate this argument. Sports and those who play them evolve both micro and macro.

Look at the lifestyles between both football players, baseball players, hockey players, and then finally basketball players. There's a huge difference in between the attitudes of basketball players vs the other sports.

I really don't think I am. People like to downplay the style of the game, and I'm not on the train. It's one thing to say that players don't have the same intensity and team style of the past and that certain rules aren't the same, but the formation and techniques continually change as time passes. The league isn't worse formation-wise, but you can say it is worse in the way those formations are applied. The same goes for baseball with things like relief pitchers and the DH, and hockey with trap defenses.

Doesn't matter. The NBA has rules regarding uniforms too. For example, you cant wear your shorts too low.
I do need to clarify here. The difference between the two leagues is that one features team due to the body armor-like existence of the players. Then you have basketball, where so much of you is exposed. Person-to-person relation is so much more important to basketball.

What I'm saying here is that if a football players' tights, multiple head/wristbands, and the rest were much more visible than they are now, and the helmet wasn't on their head, you'd see more outrage about the dress. And if there was more access in the locker rooms and other areas, we'd see more outrage as well.

It's not the tatoos that have anything to do with being "glorified thugs". It's the attitude of the person. You find better characters in football than you do basketball.
Better characters? I see way more headlines involving football crimes than basketball ones, and I am factoring in that there are way more football players than basketball players.

Look at the lifestyles between both football players, baseball players, hockey players, and then finally basketball players. There's a huge difference in between the attitudes of basketball players vs the other sports.
I see the same styles with the same cars, friends, locations, attitudes. The only real differences I see are in the balances between white and black.

And what a cliffhanger of a comment that is!

It is exactly the same.

Look at the lifestyles between both football players, baseball players, hockey players, and then finally basketball players. There's a huge difference in between the attitudes of basketball players vs the other sports.

The only difference is NBA players make more money and they are more marketable. If football rosters were only 12 men deep and there were 80 games in a year, you would see the same thing. The point is, when each NBA player is getting more personalized attention and you see them 3 days a week for seven months of the year, you over exagerate their egos compared to other athletes. They are all the same.

No way, no how. I can't agree with that at all, and that we will have to agree to disagree.

If football players didn't have to wear a structured uniform, how would the players dress? I don't have any problem with the uniforms or the clothes they wear off the court.

And how in the heck did you make the quantum leap to race (if that's really where you're going)?

That's why I hate this argument. Sports and those who play them evolve both micro and macro.
It's not an argument to me. I don't like the NBA, what it's become or how the game has evolved. I'm really not trying to make some larger socio-economic statement by saying I don't enjoy the NBA game or the attitude that is commonly associated with it.

u know what bro's David Stern is a joke to society. and i mean that with 100% of all that is inside of me.

i have been a Laker fan longer than i have been a Charger fan, since i didnt start really watching & understanding football till i was 12. but i have watched the Lakers and the sport of basketball since i can first remember.

however i am 800 times more passionate about the sport of Football than i am about Basketball. And would easily prefer Football over Basketball these days. And one of the main reasons why is because of the way David Stern has handled the sport. I remember the days of the 'bad boy' Pistons and the days of Rodman and the green hair.

The days when it was OKAY to be an individual in the sport.... But David Stern is trying to completely ERASE that mentality of the sport cuz through his stupid and warped CONSERVATIVE reasoning he is somehow 'bettering society' by not letting these players dress 'hip hop'.

Like if we see a player walk to the locker room when arriving to the game in baggy pants and a thowback jersey, thats gonna cause violence among inner city youth and copycat suburbian kids.

Gimme a break. David Stern in my honest belief is a warped overly conservative control freak dictator to say the least.

He thinks that by shielding these players personalities and uniqueness by controlling their clothing that he is saving the world. THIS IS BORDERLINE RACIST. And in every way outright stereotypical.

David Stern is a man who has a dictatorship in a society where CONSERVATISM has no place in modern society today yet because of people like him we are somehow moving backwards. Because people with warped minds like him have money and power.

Lemme tell u one thing dudes, if u think that the exposure of baggy pants, loose clothes and tatoos will incite the youth as a whole to become more violent then you are seriously FLAWED in your way of thinking.

David Stern has sucked the uniqueness of it's players (you know the 'players' the ones who are the heartbeat of the sport??) right out of their souls and would rather see a bunch of uniform cleanly shaven boys who resemble Wally and The Beaver as the heroes of the sport. Imagine fining a player cuz his shorts are too baggy.... Gimme a freakin BREAK.

Fining a player cuz he comes to work in clothes that he would normally wear because they make him feel like him.

SHAME ON YOU DAVID STERN FOR SUCKING THE FUN OUT OF A GREAT SPORT. AND FOR SUCKING THE PERSONALITIES AND THE FIRE RIGHT OUT OF YOUR PLAYERS.

WITHOUT YOUR PLAYERS YOU WOULD HAVE NOTHING, YOU CONSERVATIVE RIGHT WING JOKE OF A MAN.

GROW UP.

(and go Lakers.)

I think this is a pretty lame arguement being brought up by some in here. I love football and basketball, but I like football more. Some real idiotic statements in here being made. "glorified thugs" ? Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't football players get paid hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not millions of dollars to go out and hit someone? How does that differ from a "glorified thug"? You see football players getting into alot more trouble these days than NBA players. Look at Darrent Williams, he was gunned down due to gang violence, not saying he was a gangmember or anything, but he put himself in a situation where he'd be around them. Look at the pic of Vince Young rolling with his posse in those party pictures, do they guys at the sausauge fest look like young professionals to you?? In my opinion basketball players and football players probably have many of the same traits. You'll find thugs, and good guys in either sample pool.

Look at the lakers? How many "glorified thug" type of players do they have on that team??????

It's not just Las Vegas. It's other cities that hosted the NBA All-Star game as well, including I beleive it was New Orleans this year.

OK, I'll take that. When people downgrade current-day basketball, the closet racism starts pouring out, so I have to 'check up' and make sure it isn't happening.

I understand you, and I hate that there's this stigma...

...but here's what has to be understood. The biggest group of NBA fans are white men - a portion of which cannot relate to (or even tolerate) black players that display an attitude percieved as wrong. Stern has to protect his league to keep that stream of revenue solid.

I get Stern's motives, I just wish they didn't have to happen.

But why do SD people hate LA???? The city is not bad and its SO CAL. Two hours aways and thats it. LA and SD should both be Charger fans and LA and SD should both be Laker fans. WE MAKE UP SO CAL.
