In a meeting Bill Parcells scheduled, Jason Taylor and the vice president of football operations held an amicable in-person talk away from the team's complex to discuss Taylor's concerns about his future with the team, two sources said Friday. Although it might have been cordial, it also was ultimately ineffective.
Taylor, according to both sources, left the meeting without any better feelings about his situation. He still prefers to be traded. And he told Parcells he still believes it can get done. That's where both sides apparently disagree.
During the meeting, Parcells told Taylor that efforts to trade him have become fruitless because the market for the Pro Bowl player doesn't match his current value to the Dolphins. As a result, one source said, Parcells suggested Taylor return to the team.
:Bolt: Sorry Tuna, no one is giving you a 1st or 2nd rounder for a one year rental. If you were more realistic, then some team would make the trade.

But Parcells is right. It's very similar to what AJ did with MT. Taylor is valuable enough for the team, that Parcells wants a kings ransom to part with him. If he doesn't get it, then he won't be traded. Win-win for Parcells and the Phins(for next season at least).
However, the Phins situation is a lot different than that of the Chargers last year. The Phins could take a "reasonable" offer and it would do noting but help them in their rebuilding. If Taylor walks at seasons end, the Phins get absolutely nothing. I have always believed that something is always better than nothing, unless your talking about a disease. :)

I don't think this is like the Chargers and Michael Turner at all. SD was a good team, and the Dolphins are rebuilding from scratch.
Taylor is just a monetary drag on the Dolphins. He adds something on the field, but not enough to make up for a complete lack of talent around him. The Dolphins would be much better off getting something for his value, even if it's less than the perceived worth Miami believes.
I think Parcells is playing a game of chicken, hoping a contending team sees a weakness on their own defense, or has an injury to their own DE. That would give Parcells some leverage in trade value.
If no one takes the bait, then the Dolphins might be forced to cut Taylor at the beginning of the year, instead of paying that contract. I think Parcells loses this game of chicken and comes up empty handed in compensation for Taylor.

If nobody pays Parcells' price, Taylor is a Fin for 2008.
They don't need to cut loose of Taylor's salary to make ends meet this season. The message is clear: come very close to meeting Parcells' terms or come up empty-handed.

Why would they want to pay that much for a guy who won't win them any extra games? He's not the deciding talent between winning and losing right now. It doesn't make sense to keep him either way.

Hmmmm...kinda reminds me of a practice some GM in San Diego has when one of his players are on the trading block...
Also, I sort of thought Taylor gave up all hopes of being traded when he said that he was definitely only going to play for 1 more year in his press conference. No one in their right mind is going to give up a 2nd for a 1 year rental.

Yes, it does. It sets the tone for all future dealings with the Tuna: meet his price if you want something, much the same as AJ not acquiescing to the Saints in 2006 regarding Donnie Edwards.
If nobody comes close to the Tuna's asking price, Taylor is a Fin in 2008. They don't need the cap space, so he won't be cut loose.

Again, different situation. SD was a good team, Miami is where the Chargers were before the 2004 season when AJ did a major housecleaning.
I agree that the Fish don't need to move him for cap reasons. I agree that normally a team does not want to set precedents. However, the Dolphins need future draft picks more than they need a DE who won't help them win even one extra game.
Parcells set the bar too high for compensation, and he's going to be stuck getting nothing if they cut Taylor, or having a potential locker room problem if they keep him.

It's not a different situation as far as Tuna setting the tone for the Fins in future negotiations.
"Too high of a bar" or not, Tuna's not cutting Taylor for nothing. If there's one thing that Parcells doesn't give a rat's ass about, it's what others think about him.
Either someone meets his price or Taylor is an "unhappy" Dolphin in 2008 - just as Edwards was an unhappy Charger in 2006.

Parcells won't give in , he's got too much pride . He's right too . As soon as he lets a star player push him around , he loses alot of leverage . What Taylor wants may not be in the Dolphins best interests . He only wants to play 1 more year , and Parcells knows that he can't get enough value back for him in trade . He would rather just get what he can out of him for this 1 last year .
