The Ravens can release him at any time, or he can retire. This is just so they can keep him as long as he is worth the price they paid, and (joe correct me if I'm wrong) spread out the cap hit form the signing bonus over a long period.

Correct, they're using the years that Lewis will never play under the 7 year deal to spread out the bonus hits over 5 years.
If it's a 3 year contract, they can only spread the signing bonus over 3 seasons. If Lewis gets an option bonus in 2010, it can only be spread over 2 years. If Lewis gets an option bonus in 2011, it applies entirely to the 2011 Ravens cap.
By making it 7 years, they can spread each of the example bonuses over 5 seasons, making his contract far less burdensome over the short haul.

Great re-sign for them and Lewis, now they can draft a ILB in the first and have Lewis bring him up for the next couple of years.
