At 39 going on 40 even if he comes back from injury he won't be the same.

It doesn't matter what channel you change it to, he's there. He seriously screwed over the Jets. If he really wanted to play and was a man of his word, he'd be the Jets QB. He 'retired' so he could get out of that contract and hand pick another team to play for.

I'm not tired of Favre. I just don't like the way he handles these situations. It feels like every offseason for the the past 5 years, he retires, then unretires, then retires, then gets surgery and comes back with the team. And it doesn't help when the media is all over it every single year.

He announced his retirement before the draft. They wouldn't be looking for a QB if he hadn't retired. WHEN Sanchez busts, he will have screwed over an entire franchise.

the Jets Released him once they got Mark Shanchez, he honored his contract. now hes a Free Agent he can go where ever he wants.

Favre retired after the 2008 season ended - long before the 2009 NFL draft. He didn't honor his contract which ran through the 2009 season.

February 11, 2009

NEW YORK (AP) -- Brett Favre (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/nfl/players/1025) is done slinging passes with his rocket right arm -- maybe for good.

The 39-year-old quarterback told the New York Jets (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/nfl/teams/jets) on Wednesday that he was retiring after 18 seasons, ending a record-setting career in which he became one of the NFL's all-time greats.

"We had an all-encompassing conversation," owner Woody Johnson said of his discussion with Favre. "He told me at that point that he had made his decision to retire and thanked everybody and talked about what a great experience he had with the New York Jets."

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/football/nfl/02/11/favre.ap/index.html

After retiring, Favre asked the Jets to release him. Why a retired player would need to be released, I don't know.

April 29, 2009

Although it's really been over since January, Brett Favre (http://www.nypost.com/topics/topic.php?t=Brett_Favre)'s ballyhooed stint as a Jet came to an official end yesterday when the team released the Hall of Fame-bound quarterback from the reserve/retired list.

That means, should Favre decide he wants to play again, he is no longer the Jets' property and is free to sign with any team.

"Brett requested his release some time ago," Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum said. "He has not indicated any desire to return to football and he remains retired. We wish him the best."

Favre said, "Nothing has changed. At this time, I am retired and have no intention of returning to football."

Note the "at this time" caveat. Although it is unlikely that Favre will return to play, you can never rule anything out with him.

http://www.nypost.com/seven/04292009/sports/jets/jets_release_favre_166776.htm

After the Jets released the already retired player, the same old song and dance started once again. Very tiring and boring stuff.

Perhaps Favre will get the opportunity to screw over another franchise. Time will tell.

I have high respect for what Brett has DONE. Done as in past tense. Definitley not for what he's doing. I would have liked to see the Vikings just say no, were not interested so that he couldn't have gotten as much face time as he worked himself into all over TV.

I will agree that the drama over him got out of hand, I think he loves the attention to be honest. While the Chargers are #1 in my heart the Vikes are a fairly close second and I did not want him going there, it was totally unfair to the guys who are already on the team and working hard to be better. I really think Jackson once he gets his confidence up can be a very good QB and having Favre there as a temporary solution would have only derailed Jacksons attempts at improving and probably would have ended up with him asking for a trade. If the Vikings can get the passing attack going consistantly they will be a hard team for anyone to beat, they have arguably the best running back currently playing (other than his fumbles lol) and their D is very good so once they get that air attack going they will be a force in the NFL IMO. Back to Favre though, I do not see how he thought the packers were supposed to sit around and wait until the draft every year or longer to see if he was going to come back, that was very selfish on his part and I was glad to see that they stopped playing that game with him even though he says they forced him into early retirement.

Just a quick note, IMO LT is the best running back in the league right now but many others say it's AP and it's hard to argue with them other than the fumbling issues which are a big deal. Either way I'd love to see both players do well this year and tbe the top 2for most yards and most scores, ofcourse LT #1 in both and AP #2 lol.

Football is a business. If any of you had the ability to go out and make millions of dollars to play a game dont tell me you wouldnt keep going yourselfs. Absolutely, and we also live in America where people can change their minds as often as they want. Favre is a business and as long as he has a market for his services, the NFL, we'll hear about him, Old, Wishy Washy, and anything else, its just the way it is. What I find funny is the guys that whine about it, write in a post about it, perpetuating the exact thing thats driving them nuts, LOL. If everyone would stop talking about it and stop showing interest in the story, it wouldnt be a story anymore.

I'm wondering if some of the Minnesota players are already resenting his latest re-entry: Alex Marvez's column in Fox Sports reveals that "[C]hildress may have lost respect from some of Minnesota's veteran players earlier this summer by asking them to press Favre to play in 2009 via text message".
I could understand a player, on his own, communicating with a free agent and asking him to come in for a look-see. But when it's done at the behest of the coach or management, that is just so wrong, in my opinion.

I find it funny that no one here is even seeing the other side of the table. Why aren't any of you jumping on the Vikings for keeping their hopes up on the shoulders of a 39 year old recovering from surgery? Not only that, but knowing that you ALREADY traded for a capable starter in Sage Rosenfels? The kicker is that Favre is just one person. One free agent that could've stayed retired had no one shown interest like the Vikes. Anybody think there are other willing teams out there now? If anything, it's the NFL teams that are calling out to him.

On another note, I can't wait for Favre to lead the Vikings. I hope this season goes better than the one he had as a Jet.

it is just funny how Tomilson turns 30 and has a 1,000 yrd season but he is on a downfall, end of his career, shadow of his formerself, to old, and no longer a threat. But when Brett Farve comes back throwing 100 INT per year comes back at 40yrs old it is a golden pick for the vikings. Are you kidding me!
I dont care i am done with farve after his 5 retirement.

Favre's longevity is just an incredible feat. All of the advice he gets about retirement comes from players who retired at the nadir of their careers (unless he consulted Jim Brown and Barry Sanders, then two former greats with comparable careers weighed in). Beyond that, the story about his daughter reveals how even those who are closest to him measure their words when advising a 39 year-old NFL player... It was not until he decided no that his 10 year old opened up. Waffling: so is everyone around him (and the media) it seems.

Favre never had the drop off in production that other quarterbacks had at his age. NFC Championship game in sub-sub-zero temperatures... GB would have won under those conditions if the defense not let down and Grant began with some clumsy plays. Sure he gets the X for the interception at the end, but the team knew they never would have been in the game at the end of the fourth if not for Favre.

Then the Jets.. whole new offensive scheme and playbook, but the guy leads the team to an 8-3 before an obvious injury. He perhaps should have been sat last year, but a player typically does not ask to be benched. Unfortunately, no way in hell "Mangenius" (lol) was going to seat Favre.

This year, once Favre surpasses Jim Marshall's consecutive game streak, he will be sat if injuries or wear and tear indicate it is the best course of action. Will he put them over top? Who knows, their o-line pass protection looked horrendous and the receivers (sans Berrian) do not seem to be too competent adjusting to blitzes. The bad thing is, no matter how well he plays, the Vikings are going to run into a revitalized Eagles, improved Cardinals, refocused Giants, and hungrier Cowboys teams outside of their division (four teams on the bubble with substantial inter-season media attention). In the division, GB and Chicago improved substantially imo.

/snip.../ On another note, I can't wait for Favre to lead the Vikings. I hope this season goes better than the one he had as a Jet.
