DUDE, you got the life-size autograph ... that is SICK !!! nice job and great pic!!!!!!!![/quote]

It's a nice job only if you're single. No non-collecting wife would allow you to hang that on the wall, and I'm speaking from experience! Ha, ha!

According to the Padres PR tweet Tony Gwynn Sr. will be appearing at Friar Fest on Saturday for a Q&A and will be signing autographs.

I would imagine this would have to happen in the morning. SDSU has an intra-squad game later that evening: http://goaztecs.cstv.com/sports/m-basebl/spec-rel/020810aac.html

Darn, I guess Goose won't be coming out for this. He was the only guy I wanted.

Darn it! Looks like Garvey and Rollie Fingers are out too. Oh well, I guesss Adrian's back on as priority #1!

Someone needs their eyes checked. As far as I can tell, Fingers is still on the list.

Has anyone seen a schedule for the signings? All I have heard on the radio is that Hundley will be in Section 117 from 2:30 - 3:30 signing autographs.

Go to www.flickr.com (http://www.flickr.com). You can find some there. Anything 1024x1068 should be good to print out 8x10s. Make sure you click on the images to maximize the size as much as possible.

Fanfest was a bit chaotic today. I had my daughter with me and the autograph sessions were not very stroller friendly, so I had to call it an early day. I did walk away with the only auto I really wanted (Fingers), so it wasn't a complete bust for me. I also picked up an Adam Russell Jersey, Chris Young BP Jersey, Antonelli BP Jersey, and a Randy Wolf bat.

Cesar Ramos (x2)
Kurt Bevacqua (x2)
Mike Adams (x2)
Rollie Fingers (x2) - Ball with 81 Cy Young inscription
Chris Young (x3) -Photo w/ 07 All-Star inscription

Decided to skip out on Latos because it was too late in the day and didn't want to wait for any personalized photos or balls. For those who scored on Latos without any personalization and got sweetspots on baseballs, more power to you.

Here's my haul from today:

Clayton Richard GU Jersey (signed at the event today)
Khalil Greene GU Jersey (might get him to sign it at ST)
Tadihito Iguchi GU Jersey
Luis Perdomo GU ST Jersey (for my personal use)
Bud Black signed card
Adrian Gonzalez signed dual 8x10 photo with Edgar (finally done!)

Adrian gave a crappier signature than what you'd normally expect from an organized signing today, although he didn't add his normal biblical inscription automatically. I'm hoping this isn't a reflection of his recent exclusive with MAB, and I'm guessing that we need to really jump on opportunities to get him this season before he signs that mega contract with whichever team he does next year.

Overall the event was MUCH better organized than last year, although I wish they didn't require everyone to leave the park to get tickets for other signings. It was great to see a lot of other threaders out there today, and I'm really excited about Spring Training coming up!

I've never heard of this company before, but if they are truly teaming up with Upper Deck for these signings, I'm sure they're a broker marking up the prices a lot more to get their take. Their asking prices are over 3 times what the going market rate is right now for most of these autographs! I would steer clear of this if I were you all, unless of course you have a ton of cash lying around that you absolutely have to spend...

Tony is the best...this is why we love him. Go to New York, LA, Chicago, Boston or any other Major League city and their Hall of Famers would never do this with the fans.

San Diego fans truly do not know how luck we are that Tony is Mr. Padre. We should start calling him Mr. San Diego for all he does here in San Diego. Remember he could have gone to New York for more money. Steinbrenner really wanted him. His father even told him to leave San Diego. Tony said it was the only time in his life that he did not follow his father’s advice.

Scoot, looks like you're in the process of 're-inventing' your collection like I did last year. I used to always do 8x10s and baseballs, but eventually I got to the point where only reserve the baseballs for high-end players and 'top' prospects (not any Padre player that gets called up from the minors!). You can't go wrong with 8x10s since they are much cheaper to print out, and easier to store without experiencing as much damage like the baseballs do. I've found that no matter what you do to protect the baseballs, they eventually end up with some sort of sun damage eventually.

Anyway, it's your collection you can obviously do what you want. But, I've personally moved towards only doing high-end rookie cards of my favorite players, and select lower-end cards and photos for the scrubs. I don't do the 10-20 cards of every player that a lot of other collectors do, but, again, that's personal preference. It might be a little late to stockpile high-end rookie cards right now, but I would advise that the 8x10s are probably the way to go right now getting ready for ST.

gonna try to make it out to some aztecs games soon, maybe this ssat game, i was searching some older posts and some some successes from greg vaughn, was he just sitting in the stands? was he at most of their home games?

newguy24, Greg Vaughn used to make it out for mainly the weekend games last year, and he gladly signed when approached. But, this is a new season, so you probably have to just go out and see how it goes on your own. Also, FYI, Cory Vaughn and Addison Reed were recently included in the top 100 prospects in college baseball. I suggest going on Google or Yahoo and see what images you can pull up there for 8x10s if you need photos...

Well, I returned from a successful (but rainy) ST trip. Although it was only a weekend trip (Fri-Sun), it proved to be well worth it. Unfortunately, it poured on Saturday and all the AZ camps were canceled. Some players, as they left their respective camps, signed here and there for those who decided to brave the rain but I opted not to do this as I did not want my items ruined.

On Friday, I hit the Pads/Mariners camp.

On Saturday morning (6am -8am), I returned to the Pads camp to get the players before the all day downpour began. The rest of the day was spent hanging out at the hotel and watching TV (especially the weather channel).

On Sunday morning, I returned to the Pads camp in the morning to finish my items then headed over to the Rangers camp (Royals closed their camp to the public on Sat/Sun because of the rain and field conditions).

My take for the two (2) full days of graphing (Fri & Sun) was 133 items (1 cap/1 HOF bat/1 vinyl poster/1 mini helmet/6 BB/19 pix/104 cards):

*All autos were on cards unless otherwise noted*

PADRES

Antonelli (2/1 pix), Cabrerra (3/1 pix), Stauffer (2), LeBlanc (2), Venable (5), Durango (1), Gwynn Jr. (5/3 pix), Black (1/1 pix), Ackerfelds (1), Garland (2/2 pix), Ready (8), Bell (3/3 pix/1 vinyl poster), Hundley (4/2 pix), Richard (1), Liz (1), Young (3), Dascenzo (3), Balsley (5), Blanks (1 BB/2 pix), Antonelli/Blanks combo (1 pix), Aaron Poreda (1 BB), Yorvit Torrealba (1 BB), Dave Roberts (1 Red Sox cap/1 BB), Dick Enberg (added to HOF bat)

Mariners

Johnson (1), Feierabend (1), Rowland-Smith (2), Tuiasosopo (1), Byrnes (3), Figgins (1)

Rangers

Maddux (1), Francisco (2), Ray (2), Hurdle (2), Davis (2), Cruz (2/1 BB), Kinsler (3/1 pix), Wilson (2), Oliver (1), Harrison (1), Harden (2), McCarthy (1), Feliz (1/1 BB), Saltalamacchia (1), Anderson (4), Jones (3), Moore (2), Buechele (3), Hamilton (8/2 pix/1 mini helmet)

Josh Hamilton isn't a typo...he signed multiples for everyone. All 11 items I got, he signed at once. He said he didn't want to see the same people coming back so he said to have the items ready and he would decide the limit based on what he signed for each person. He also jumped on some guy who came back with more items after he signed for him earlier...the guy left with only 1 more item as Hamilton cut him off.

I'll return to ST at the end of the week (Fri-Mon) to try my luck again when everyone is in camp (weather permitting).

Don't forget - MLB All Star FanFest tickets go on sale today. $30 per day. Starts on Friday, and runs through Tuesday.

Tickets have an 'entry' time on them, so you won't be allowed in before the time on your ticket.

Saturdays and Sundays are the busiest days, and the Hall-of-Famer softball game is on Sunday.

I got tickets for Friday (9 am) and Monday (10 am). I actually have an extra ticket for Friday, at 10 am. I have the ticket in hand already (print from home through Ticketmaster).

Ticket cost me $40 after their transaction fees. (I accidentally put in 10 am instead of 9 am). I'll let it go for $35 (it's $38 for a ticket via Ticketmaster to do the 'mail it to you option), if anyone is interested in it. Let me know, and we can talk about it.

Hello,

I have been a lurker on this site for many years and have decided to introduce myself. I have learned a TON from you guys over the years and really appreciate all the information that has been posted!

About me, I have been collecting autographs for pretty much my entire life primarily going to golf tournaments, hotels, car dealership signings, etc. The past couple of years, I had not really done a lot with collecting, but within the last year or so, I have grown more and more interested. I have a 9 year old son and a 10 year old daughter that seem to really enjoy it, so it has been fun teaching them the correct ways to ask for autographs and to use “Please and Thank You”. Also, I am not a guy that will have 10 helmets/ balls for the person to sign for my store on EBAY.. I know people do it, but I am not that guy, but my focus is more or less to do it for the experience and the challenge!

Anyway, I am planning on making my first trip to Spring Training within the next couple of weeks and have a couple questions. It looks like I am planning on hitting the Padres/Mariners/ Dodgers/ White Sox/ Brewers and possibly the Indians camps.

Here are my questions:

1. I was thinking about going from March 4th – March 6th, but was not sure where would be the best place to have as much access to the players at each facility.

2. It sound like workouts start around 9:30am, but what time do you typically arrive?

3. Does anyone have any good websites that I would be able to order bulk Balls, Mini Helmets at a good price? I was at CJ’s today and they seemed to be picked over very well..

4. We are on somewhat of a budget, so any good hotels, restaurants, would be really appreciated.

Ultimately, I would like to have as much exposure as possible, and really want to waste as little time as possible learning the ropes!

Thank you for taking the time to look at my post and look forward to hearing back from you!

I hit up the Aztecs game tonight. Besides some good baseball (and SDSU's first win of the season), I was able to score some nice autos afterwards.

David Eckstein - Mini Helmet
Tony Gwynn Jr - 8x10
Scott Hairston - 8x10
Mat Latos - 8x10
Heath Bell - 8x10
Yorvit Torrealba - 8x10
Everth Cabrera - 8x10
Chase Headley - 11x14
Matt Antonelli - Game Issued Jersey
Aaron Poreda - BP Jersey
Nick Hundley - resigned a Helmet and Bat for me.
Team Helmet - Torrealba, Hairston Jr, Salazar, Cabrera, Adams

And the BEST part.....After Poreda signed the jersey, he said he had something else for me....and reached into his passenger seat and grabbed his glove from today and handed it to me..then signed it.

Not a bad day.

Latos was kind of a douche at friarfest. I hand him a mlb (payed $15 for it) then he spins it on its side and is about to pull the bull**** autograph on me. so I ask him if he can sign it on the sweetspot. So he hooked me up with a one inch autograph off to one side of the ball. I know it's a lot to ask of someone to sign all that stuff when he clearly wants to, but damn that was the only signing I had the opportunity to go to and it was quite a let down. friarfest last year was the best by far for autographs.

All the posters I've seen in my room, in class....in liquor stores have always referred to him as "Mr. San Diego". I think he will always be the iconic SD sports figure.

Get to the facility at about 830am. Wait by the entrance, where the players drive in.

Answer.....Sometimes they will stop and sign on their way in. After all the players are inside, the workouts begin. Hang out over by the batting cages. That's be best place to get the Padres during their workouts.

3. Does anyone have any good websites that I would be able to order bulk Balls, Mini Helmets at a good price? I was at CJ’s today and they seemed to be picked over very well..

Easy answer..... Come to see me at the store.

4. We are on somewhat of a budget, so any good hotels, restaurants, would be really appreciated.

Stay about 10-15 miles away from the complex, you will find much cheaper hotels.

Ultimately, I would like to have as much exposure as possible, and really want to waste as little time as possible learning the ropes!

Thank you for taking the time to look at my post and look forward to hearing back from you!

Ryan

Hey Sean,

Thank you for your feedback it is VERY helpful!! I really appreciate you taking the time to respond!!! I also wanted to say that I was just in your store a few days ago and you have some outstanding signatures! The Ali and Adrian Gonzalez photos really caught my eye!

I know you get quite a few people in for signatures, but I would love to see you bring back as many of the 1984 World Series team for a group signing! I realize that the Padres did this last year with some of the players, but it was only for 45 min, so I think it would be cool to get some of these guys..

Thank you again and I can't wait to get out to Spring Training!

Spring Training Day 2:

Brewers - Nothing (full team doesnt arrive til the weekend)
Rangers - Nothing (only really went for Hamilton, and hes out right now with an injury that occurred 2 days ago)
Padres:

Everth Cabrera 8x10
Chase Headley Mini Helmet
Chris Denorfia WBC Ball

Latos has been real cool the last 2 days. Im gonna try and have him sign a Mini Helmet tomorrow.
As far as photos, yesterday Latos said he wont sign photos unless he personalizes them (didnt matter to me)

I probably wont head anywhere but Padres tomorrow just because of how today sucked at the other places.

nice job! That's awesome that poreda gave you his game used glove! Was Tate there while you were there, because him & some other prospects are starting their rookie "training camp" soon. BTW, where did you get those mini-helmets at?

I didnt see Tate....there wasnt very many minor leaguers there yet....but then again, i didnt really look. Until you make it to the league.....youre not worth my time...LOL.

I got the mini helmets from a guy on ebay. Im sick of baseballs, and they are cheaper than balls so I'm going that route now. Only downfall is that they are team specific.

If youre going out...dont even bother with Adrian. Youll be wasting your time. Everyone else was pretty good though.

Went to the Walton/Winfield signing, before they started signing, they both stood up in front of everybody and welcomed those who braved the weather. Both guys were upbeat and just seemed like they wanted to be heard. Great Event. Walton said he hadn't seen the pic I had signed and wanted a copy, but I don't remember who I got it from. He also thinks that he blocked the shot.

I spent the weekend out in Phoenix. It was great seeing a lot of threaders out in force helping each other out. Unfortunately the weather didn't cooperate today as it rained quite a bit so I skipped out on the Royals/Rangers fanfest (I assume that it was cancelled). In all, it was a great time. How is all this worthless, EndzoneJunie? While some of these items might not be considered 'high-end' to some collectors, there are some decent items in Scoot's post that have some value to Padres collectors - especially the Poreda game issued glove. I don't recall you posting on this site before, so trying to call someone out like this on your first post is pretty pathetic.

I just got back from ST myself tonight, and I wanted to add to Scoot's post about Adrian. Adrian has gotten almost as tough as Ichiro this ST, and that's actually an insult to Ichiro since he has signed a bit since ST started on the Mariners side. At the Fanfest on Saturday, Adrian came out late and started signing down the line. But, he said that he would 'only sign for the kids first' and then sign for everyone afterward. Once he got to the end of the first base line (after signing for all the kids), he went to do a quick interview, and then headed back to the complex on a cart without signing for anyone else.

I, for one, never feel entitled to an autograph. But, I think there's merit in honesty. If Adrian doesn't want to sign for everyone then I think he should just say so instead of lying about it. I respect the fact that players might not want to sign for everyone, but just be honest about your intentions. I can handle the 'not today' or 'maybe tomorrow.' But, consciously lying about your future intentions knowing that you have fans waiting for you is pretty chicken s$%^.

There are dark days ahead for collectors in SD this season with Adrian. I don't know if it's because his recent exclusive contract with MAB, or his apprehension with upcoming contract negotiations with the Padres. But, either way, if you have a lot of items for him to sign (like I do), I wouldn't hold my breath about getting everything done.

It's times like this that really make me appreciate what Gwynn Sr. does for us out here in SD. He's a tried and true HOFer, and he still signs for free quite a bit. You might get an earful here and there depending on his mood, but you'll still walk away with the autographs you want.

The new generation of superstars in MLB have a lot to learn from HOFers like Gwynn, but I'm afraid that those lessons aren't going to be learned in the money-making environment that has consumed MLB. Bottom line - don't pass up an autograph opportunity with anyone of note in the near future if you can help it...(off my soap box now)

I hear you, but frivolous posts like that without any sort of merit only serve to cheapen the value of what we're all trying to accomplish on this thread. Whether or not many 'regulars' like to post on here, we all benefit from much of the information that other people post. There are plenty of other threads to hate on people. Well, we returned from another successful (but again rainy) ST trip. This time, my travels took me to see the Pads/Mariners/Brewers/Rangers/Royals. We were there Friday-Monday. Unfortunately, it poured on Sunday and canceled most practices including the FanFest at Surprise, AZ for the Rangers/Royals/Old Timers game. With that being the case, it left three (3) good graphing days for us. It was also nice to see Scoot/Lou/DV/SDFan/Harrid and others out there racking up the sigs and helping each other out.

On Friday, we hit the Pads/Royals/Rangers and fared pretty well. Hamilton and Insler signed multiples all day long at Rangers' camp...it was great! They ran a little long on the practice side which made it easier to get other teams (for those who did) then go back to the Rangers camp for more sigs. The Royals were their usual selves and Granke didn't sign that day; we heard he signed on other days but this was my only visit to the KC camp during the trip.

Saturday, I went to the Pads/Mariners Fanfest then the Brewers camp (this was their first team practice and luckily for many...it started late in the afternoon). The Mariners were the first to practice and it was a ZOO!!! Ichiro, Griffey, Lee, and Sweeney (to name a few) came over to sign. Unfortunately, I ended up at the bottom of the "pile" (literally) when Ichiro came over but I got him twice (x1-base/x1 '06 WBC program). Congrats to those who scored Griffey as he only signed a handful before leaving. Following the Mariners, the Pads took the field and as previously stated in past posts, Gonzalez was not fan friendly...to some degree. He signed for kids only. He also signed very few (only a handful) at various times during the Pads practices; in most instances, he gave the "traditional" wave hello or good-bye as he arrived/left practice or ignored the Pads faithful all together! The remainder of the team was great!

On Sunday, the rains came so it was hanging out at the hotel, watching movies, having a drink or two then trying to plan Monday's adventure since it would be my last day.

On Monday, we hit the Pads in the morning then left to the Brewers camp. I found out the Mariners and Rangers had inter-squad scrimmages at their respective camps and would be practicing later in the day. Since we had to drive back, Brewers camp was our last stop before heading home. In fact, the Brewers also ran late due to a MLBPA Union meeting in the morning. They practiced until 1:45 pm (AZ time). We got a few more sigs there then left.

Again it was a great trip. My take for the three (3) full days of graphing (Fri, Sat, & Mon) was 200 items (1 WBC magazine/1 GU Hairston bat/1 mini helmet/2 full sizes bases/9 BB/34 pix/152 cards):

*All autos were on cards unless otherwise noted*

Padres

Black (1/1 pix), Tate (1 BB), Balsley (6), Eckstein (3/2 pix), Stauffer (5), Headley (4/2 pix), J. Hairston (3/1 BB), Loretta (8/1 BB/2 pix), Carrillo (3), Venable (5), S. Hairston (3/1 GU bat/1 BB/2 pix), Gwynn Jr. (2/1 BB/3 pix), Ready (8), Riddoch (6), Latos (1), Stairs (6), Bell (2 BB/2 pix), Roberts (1 BB/2 pix), Garland (2 pix), Blanks (2 pix), Antonelli (1 pix), Blanks/Antonelli combo (1 pix), Cabrera (2 pix), Durango (1 BB)

Rangers

Saltalamacchia (2), Hawkins (8), Maddux (3), Kinsler (7/1 pix), Young (2 pix), Hamilton (3/1 full size base/3 pix)

Royals

Seitzer (4), Tejeda (1), Cruz (1), Humber (1), Gordon (1), Podsednik (1), Davies (3), Soria (3), Butler (7), McClure (2), White (2), Chen (2)

Brewers

Davis (1), Hawkins (1), Halama (1), Butler (1), Loe (3), Narveson (1), McGehee (1), Edmonds (3), Fielder (3/1 mini helmet/2 pix), Weeks (2), Gerut (2), Hart (6), Gamel (1), Gale (1), Salome (1), Zaun (1), Braun (1/2 pix)

Mariners

Ichiro (1 WBC magazine/1 full size base), Snell (2), Wetteland (2), Sweeney (1), French (1), Lopez (1), Lee (1)

Combined totals for the past two weekends are 333 items...not bad for any "ST vacation".

Ruppert Jones and Kurt Bevaqua were there too.

Apparently Archi Cianfrocco was there. I debated going down there and having him sign the 1998 World Series program but so far I only have starters on it.

ticket from Cincy? Or at the Braves? I have about 6 from my family going to the Braves series.

Mat Latos made his major league debut July 19 2009 against the Rockies. I only had one ticket from that game and I had Latos sign it at Friar Fest. He got his first win July 24 2009 on the road in Washington DC against the Nationals. I'd love to get that ticket stub but somehow I don't think I'll ever get it!

Sean would you ever consider having Latos sign at your store? He's a tough autograph to get and I know I would be there!

i don't know, last year at the reds/pads game, he would not sign for anyone either. has anyone here gotten griffey?

As random as this is I got him at Cheesecake Facotry a couple years ago in Fashion valley. His group parked next to me so i shook his hand and he signed a piece of paper i had, nothing too spectacular as far as collectibles but it was cool and he was actually nice about it, i think because of no one being around and who can put up much energy after eating at the factory?

Hit up the SDSU Invitational against UAB this evening and scored Gwynn after the game on x3 cards and x1 magazine. It was a close game...Aztecs leading 8-1 going into the top of the ninth only to hold off the surging UAB bats to win 8-7.

Nice ... looks like Tony is relaxing on the HOF inscriptions only for HOF items.

It kinda hit and miss. I have other "non-HOF" items signed with the inscriptions.

Just curious x, did you ask him to inscribe on the 3,000 hit program?

The last few times I've seen Tony sign, I saw him add his HOF inscription to a lot of non-HOF items automatically, so I would agree that he appears to be relaxing his previous policy. The only exception would be cards and smaller items. But, to be on the safe side in the future, if you want him to do it it never hurts to ask politely...

Hi everyone,

I'm checking to see if anyone has an extra Cal Ripken Jr. Sports Illustrated magazine available you would be willing to part with - the September 11th, 1995 'Iron Man' issue, and/or the 2007 HOF Commemorative edition (similar to the Gywnn one that everyone has)? I'm looking for a copy that is in mint condition with no label on it. I know there are a few on ebay, but I need to try and get my hands on one sooner than later. Please PM me if you can help me out. Former Chargers RB & KR Ronney Jenkins will be signing at the store on April 17 for only $5. That's right $5 autographs on any item. Also signing with Ronney Jenkins will be Padres Kyle Blanks & Chase Headley and Playboy Playmate Candice Cassidy.

Ronney Jenkins
San Diego Chargers (http://forums.chargers.com/wiki/San_Diego_Chargers) (2000 (http://forums.chargers.com/wiki/2000_NFL_season)-2002 (http://forums.chargers.com/wiki/2002_NFL_season))
Oakland Raiders (http://forums.chargers.com/wiki/Oakland_Raiders) (2003 (http://forums.chargers.com/wiki/2003_NFL_season))

WAC (http://forums.chargers.com/wiki/Western_Athletic_Conference) Freshman of the Year (1996)
2nd team All-WAC (1998)
2nd team All-Big Sky (1999)
AFC (http://forums.chargers.com/wiki/American_Football_Conference) Special Teams Player of the Week (Week 2, 2000)
AFC Special Teams Player of the Month (October 2001)
Pro Bowl (http://forums.chargers.com/wiki/Pro_Bowl) alternate (2001 (http://forums.chargers.com/wiki/2002_Pro_Bowl))
I'm hoping that we get a good turnout for Jenkins.... I would like to bring in a $5 autograph guest every month. I'm excited to see how this turns out. I am also thinking of starting some kind of rewards program for the people who regularly attend our signings. Let me know if you have any ideas.

So far we have Padres Kyle Blanks, Chase Headley, Clayton Richard & Mike Adams scheduled this season. We are working on a deal with Mat Latos right now. Are there any other current Padres that you would like to see sign at the store this season?

Don't forget this Saturday at the store Doug Wilkerson, Ed White as well as

Lionel "Little Train" James 1st signing

& James Brooks' 1st signing since 2005.

Thank you,
Sean Jacoby

Sean,

I agree with Scoe25's post on the Chargers thread - there are really no other Padres I would be interested in paying for right now. But, I think it might be beneficial for AIA to try and bring in some star players and hot prospects from visiting teams throughout the season, like you did with Chipper Jones last year. The Braves have a lot of good young talent who shouldn't be very costly, such as Tommy Hanson and hopefully Jason Heyward. The Giants have some good young players as well, such a Bumgarner and Posey (not to mention Lincecum and the other big names). I could go on and on with the other teams, but this effort is definitely something I would be interested in if you could do it this season... :D

Thanks loumud, just found a site called futurestarphotos.com, they've got alot of minor league padres photos there, but I'll also be checking the bay as well.

Futurestarphotos is a good source for some quality photos of prospects. Plus I do like the MiLB holograms on them. However, there are 2 main drawbacks. #1, the pictures run $6 a piece and the shipping is pretty steep if you only have a handful of photos to order. #2, once a player gets called up to the majors they have to take the photos of that player off the market or else they violate some sort of licensing agreement. Also, they don't have photos of all the good prospects, so you still want to check out other sources for some of the lesser-known, but talented prospects. Some of the sellers on eBay take some quality photos during ST and during the AFL, so they can often times offer a better selection overall...

Not really a Padres thing, but baseball none-the-less. I was in Florida on business and I stopped by Nationals camp on the way to the airport yesterday. I could only stay for 30 minutes, but I wanted to try my luck at Strasburg. It didn't work out for me, but Nationals camp was a different experience. There is no security. You can go wherever you want (including parking in the players lot). There is no one there (I was one of only 4 or 5 people).

Strasburg pitched an intrasquad game and when he was done, there were only two people there. One was a little kid with a Strasburg jersey, and Stephen blew him off. No one got an autograph from him. I was talking to an AP reporter and he said Strasburg is the only guy he's ever known that won't schedule interviews through the PR staff. The reporter had to hang around like us collectors and just try his luck.

I did walk away with a couple autographs. I got Chris Duncan on a couple of cards and Jerry Owens.

Just got back from spring training and to see my Braves he is a great signer so far what I seen at spring training. And then again during his time spent in the AFL last fall also he was a good signer. But who knows how he is around game time. I myself in my opinion think he is good. Usually the Braves are a good signing team.

Finally a topic that a lurker can offer a point of view on . . .

I'm in agreement with Scoe25 on both the Braves and Heyward. Heyward seems to be a good signer for someone in demand, at least at spring training. He doesn't sign every day, but when he does, he tends to sign a lot. I got him to sign a baseball for me a few days ago.

However, it should be noted that his signature, which wasn't pretty to begin with, has now been abbreviated to simply "JH" and a line. I saw a ball he signed for a charity auction the other day and the autograph was only a tiny bit better. Also, he already has a marketing contract and will not sign the sweet spot on baseballs. If anyone's interested, I can post the photo later.

Make of this what you will . . . and good luck to newguy24.

Gotta love the 'new' Adrian (or not).

On a side note, I decided to take a leisurely stroll up to Huntington Beach today to check out Jennifer Love Hewitt's book signing at Barnes & Noble. I took a couple of photos and a magazine as well, but they were strict about no outside items. She's such a nice lady in-person, and she looked spectacular as always! I swear she looks better in-person than she does on film. Being able to see and talk to her in-person is always worth the trip! Sorry the photo didn't come out too clear, but security made us put cameras away before we could get good close-up shots.

On another side note, there was an Upper Deck store in the sample shopping complex, so I went in to check it out while I was waiting for the JLH signing. If you act quickly, they have a Tony Gwynn Sr. single signed SS ROMLB for only $225! It's not inscribed with his HOF inscription or anything! What a deal - I almost fell on the floor laughing...

I spent a couple of days out at the KIA LPGA Classic at La Costa last week, and I have posted some of the more notable spoils of my efforts below. I wasn't a big fan of the LPGA until dv82u brought me into the light last year. The women are definitely MUCH more pleasant in-person overall compared to the PGA players with few exceptions (cough, cough, Suzann Pettersen, Karrie Webb, Julie Inkster, etc.). In any case, being able to meet Natalie Gulbis in-person was more than worth the effort! She absolutely racks in-person.

I have a funny story to share concerning the semi-nude photo of Christina Kim, Anna Grzebien, and Sandra Gal if anyone wants to meet up for beers (it's a legitimate photo that was shot for ESPN magazine)! By the way, though her photos are so-so, Sandra Gal looks amazing in-person. Anna Rawson is also the biggest sweetheart in the world too! It's too bad Creamer was injured and didn't attend the event. Congrats Loumud on your haul! I definitely enjoyed viewing all of your items! I might have to secretly attend one of these LPGA events with you and dv82u in the future to truly experience the joy you described above. That leads me to one question....what does your wife think about all of the photos/magazines/cards of these beautiful women? My wife would KILL me. :)

I'm fortunate since my wife's cool about it. Plus, after 10 years of marriage, she's pretty much gotten over any insecurities she might have had before. As long as I'm not staring at the racy photos drooling over them all day, she just rolls her eyes and laughs about them!

I'm excited for that one! Great pricing!!! I'll probably get a ball and a flat.

Question is, since we are paying for it, does he still inscribe it? Not sure how that works.

for 7:05 games, players start getting to the stadium around 1 or 2, right?
and for 1:05 games, they arrive around 9 or so?
so for 5:35 games, theyd be arriving around 11 or so, right?

It depends on the player...

ScootMagroot
04-04-2010, 05:38 PM
but those are somewhat around the avg times players would be arriving, and that omni skybridge is off-limits for non-hotel users, right?

Yes, and yes. The Braves havent stayed there in the past so unless its changed, that shouldnt be a problem. they typically get a cab or petty cab to the park. or the shuttle from the hotel

$100 for an Aaron ball with an incription plus a signed card sounds a bit low to me. But, stranger things have happened. Goldin used to be a reuptable dealer back in late 90s, as far as I know, but the problem with them and the previous Scoreboard company is that they didn't have any matching holograms for their certs and items. So, anyone could add an authentic cert with any item and try to claim it as authentic. My suggestion is to send it into PSA/DNA or JSA and see what they say. At least that way you'll at least have a third party opinion that will hold some weight.

i wonder if roberts will be at any shows this year? need to get him on a few more cards....

Someone asked him that in Peoria and he said he wouldn't because he doesn't work for 1090 anymore, he's a Pads employee. All his functions will be with the team although he could be a special guest on the show from time to time.

Went and checked out the Braves this week. Wednesday was a total bust (wrong place at the wrong time all day), but I'm glad I took the hit and went back Thursday. Wasn't able to get Chipper, but still walked away with pretty much everyone I needed. Heyward was hit or miss outside, but he signed some on the field after BP on Thursday. Tommy Hanson was really cool on Thursday and gladly signed multiples for the people who caught him on the way in. Overall, definitely worth the effort!

Wish I could have gotten more items signed by Heyward, but with the card I got him to sign I was finally able to finish up my player sets from last year's California-Carolina League All-Star Game in Lake Elsinore (still missing 1 of the assistant coaches from Carolina, but as far as I'm concerned they're done!). The sets contain a lot of good prospects, such as Buster Posey, Logan Forsythe, Cory Luebke, Mike Moustakas, Brian Matusz, Alex Liddi, Cody Johnson, Lonnie Chisenhall, Christian Marrero, and of course Jason Heyward.

Those are cool sigs. I got Blanks and Headley when the team played the exhibition game over at Elsinore. I got a feeling that the Pads aren't going to do many free public signings since a lot of them are signing over at AIA. We'll see how the season goes.

Really disappointed I missed the signing at AIA. An errand that I thought would take less than an hour took 2. Wouldn't miss the Mat Latos one for anything!!!

Again, refer to my comment above! Latos is a bit of a different cat, so I will probably partake in the AIA signing to get a couple photos signed without personalizations. But, everyone else on the Padres roster (excluding Adrian) is not too difficult to get...

I was thinking about going to Tuesday's game and trying to get some of the Giants. Anyone have any luck with Lincecum? I am trying to decide on adding Bruce Bochy to my 1998 World Series program. So far it's only starting players (Gwynn, Vaughn, Carlos Hernandez, Finley) but Boch was a big part of that team. What do you guys think? Have any of you got him since he's been the Giants manager?

Yes, you should get Bochy since he was the manager. I've gotten him a couple times as he is great signing for anybody.

I concur - Bochy is definitely a must for your program. I would also take it a step further - instead of just getting the starters, why not try and get the entire team (living members)? Or, you can get one already signed by Caminiti and start over since you don't have too many sigs just yet. I did that with my Astros 1986 Pennant program. It was one heck of a challenge and took me around 3 or 4 years to complete. But, it was well worth the effort!

I headed out to a USD game today. Kyle Blair is the real deal. There were a lot of scouts checking him out today. All of the players were great. I walked away with:
Kyle Blair - 4/4 cards, 1/1 photo
Victor Sanchez - 4/4 cards, 1/1 photo
Sammy Solis - 3/3 photos
James Meador - 2/2 photos
AJ Griffin - 2/2 photos
Ryan Carpenter (Gonzaga top prospect) - 2/2 photos

I'd still like to see him pitch. Is there a "plan" for when he pitches? I know college is kind of different than MLB.

Went to check out the USD vs. Cal State Fullerton game today, mainly to get autos from CSF's star player Christian Colon. He was the 2009 Team USA team captain, and is expected to be an early 1st round draft pick (on top of being a contender for the Golden Spikes Award this year). Got 12 cards signed by Colon, including 4 AFLAC cards. Also got 3 cards and a photo signed by USD star pitcher A.J. Griffin. A good day for graphing, despite USD losing the game to a CSF grand slam in the top of the 9th.

Oh nice Trevor signed (and didn't personalize)! Anyone else get him?

There were 7-8 people that scored a nice auto from Trevor (including a couple threaders).

The best part was as he was signing, Will Venable pulled in to the players lot, rolled down his window, and said something along the lines of "Mr. Hoffman, good to see you." Trevor responded with "Hey kid, you're having a great start to the season. Keep it up." I'm paraphrasing a bit, but it was great just seeing Will be starstruck.

Went out the check out the Brewers a few times this week. Braunie only signed outside 1 day, as far as I know, and gave a pretty crappy signature, personalizing all photos and not doing any sweet spots. Gallardo was true to form and only signed 1 autograph total that I witnessed. Fielder and Edmonds threw down as always except for 1 day. Trevor only signed 1 day going into the stadium, but typically signed on his way out after the games. I was able to score the following items total, although more players did sign that I didn't have anything for:

Trevor Hoffman x2 (including my second full 2007 Padres AS Trio photo)
Jim Edmonds x4 (2 cards and 2 photos)
Prince Fielder x3 (photos)
Randy Wolf (card)
Jeff Suppan (card)
Jody Gerut (photo)
Latroy Hawkins (photo)
Alcides Escobar (ball)
Craig Counsell (card)

Some of the more notable items are pictured below:

Ok, it's confirmed now - Mat Latos has at least 2 different variations of his autograph. I've heard through the grape vine that he has 3, but these are the only two I have witnessed. I got the photo below signed at the Lake Elsinore game at the beginning of the season, and the top card was signed at ST. I think these are the regular version of his auto. The bottom two cards were signed recently at Padres games, and it's funny because he actually paused a bit and took some time to sign the autos like it didn't come natural to him, whereas his regular auto comes more automatic. I'm a much bigger fan of the regular version.

I think Latos has definite potential, but in the grand scheme of things I also think it's hilarious that someone who hasn't even thrown a full MLB season with a winning record already feels the need to sign different variations of his autograph (or even more so that I took the time to provide this evaluation here)!

To the card collectors on here, can someone tell me how to spot the difference between a regular 1991 Topps Traded issue baseball card and the Tiffany? I though the Tiffany cards were supposed to be glossier on the front, but someone on ebay is telling me it has to do with the coloring on the back of the card. They said that the coloring on the back of the card is a lighter neon color on the Tiffany. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hey guys - I am hoping that you can answer a few questions as I will be visiting San Diego on holidays in mid June and attending the Mariners series:

- how early can fans attend batting practice and is it possible to get autographs from the visiting team?
- I am just looking for single tickets but since I have not attended any Padres games I would like to frame the ticket stubs. Because of this I am looking for Padre season ticket holder stubs rather than the generic ticketmaster type - any ideas where I can scoop some?
- I may stay at the Omni - do any teams stay there and does the hotel have any autograph policy if you are a guest there?
- which Padres have the most legible autographs?

Cheers.

-Stadium opens 90 before game time during the week, and 2 hours before on the weekends
-look on craigslist for season ticket holders trying to sell their ticket. either that or buy a cheap seat, and search the seats after the game.
-some teams do stay there, but dont know about the M's, they dont let you inside if the team is staying there, and they dont like you out front, but if youre across the street or around the corner they dont say anything.
-chris young, david eckstein, heath bell......thats about it.

I don't know if he's in town this weekend but he is smoker...I remember getting him during his playing days with the Pads and on most occasions, he was smoking a cigar while he signed after the game. Back in the day, he along with Garvey and Hawkins used to park near Gate H at The Murph to avoid the auto hounds.

I found the TG signing online (EC Ford wesite) this morning before I left work at 4 am. Needless to say, it was a looooong day as I went from work to home to get some items then back to EC Ford. Gwynn was scheduled to be there from 9 am-10 am but around 9:45 am, they made an announcement that he would stay until 11 am. For those that stayed (about 12 or so) for round 2, he hooked everyone up and was in a pretty good mood as he joked with everyone, especially those of us who stayed around. It was also noted that his 50th B-day is tomorrow.

My take from the signing was:

x1 full-size home plate
x1 full sized helmet (clean auto...flash didn't capture entire sig)
x1 Pads jersey
x2 magazines

It's probably between glossy and matte. I personally prefer matte photos since the markers or paint pens tend to 'catch' the surface better resulting in bolder autographs. You also don't get as much of a splashing effect with paint pens on matte photos as you do with glossy photos as well.

Hey Ken, I think I just one-upped you today on your Chargers signed book that was stolen out of your car a few months back!

It is with great sadness and embarrasment that I am informing everyone here that my Mark McGwire game used bat was stolen from me in front of the Omni today. I took it with me today to try and get it signed. I originally purchased it back in 2004 for $1,500, which the re-sale value would be significantly less in today's economy. I had it in a clear plastic tube, but I had a black sock over the barrel. So, only the handle would have been visible. I didn't take it out to show anyone, but I mentioned to a couple of people that I know that I had it with me. I had it leaned up against the wall near the entrance to the parking garage behind my backpack. I walked a few yards away to talk to someone else briefly, and when I came back it was gone. I was literally apart from it for only a few short minutes. I originally thought that it was a prank since there were a handful of regular collectors I knew in the area when I walked away, but it never turned up.

I subsequently had an officer from the SPD come out to take a police report on it. The case has since been assigned to a detective in the Central Division for further investigation on account of the value of the item.

For now, if anyone has any knowledge of its whereabouts, I am asking that you please let me know. If I can get it returned, then I will write it off as a simple prank, cancel the report, and we can get on with our lives. Otherwise, if it turns up later then the process will run its due course.

It was a blonde Rawlings Adirondack McGwire model bat with a good amount of pine tar in the middle, used in the 1999 season. The bottom of the knob has "MAC25 4 10 99" stamped into it, which is unique to the date the bat was made. This cannot be taken off without causing significant damage to the bottom of the knob. It was also authenticated by PSA/DNA and had an authentication sticker on the end of the barrel.

In any case, I feel 'mentally challenged' (the current politically-correct way of saying 'retarded') on account of my mistake, and I feel like I just lost a family member today, as this bat was one of the crown jewels of my game used collection. If anyone here can learn anything from this it's that nothing is safe, not even for a few seconds! I guess I just got complacent since I've never had any issues like this before over the past few years.

But, for now, I'm going to find a bottle of whiskey to drown away my sorrows tonight, secretly hoping that my insurance company will at least cover a good portion of the value. I'm not holding my breath, though...

I'm sure SDPD detectives will look at it but did you try contacting the Omni to inquire about their CCTV system? I'm sure they have cameras outside their hotel which may have caught someone taking the bat? Speak to their head of security and advise them what happened; they may ask for the SDPD case number to verify. If you view the video, you may recognize the person(s) involved.

I appreciate all the support you guys have given me thus far, and I'm hoping someone will help provide me information that will help me eventually recover my bat.

While I continue to work with the police department to figure this out, I've done some research on the infraction and this is what I have learned. As far as California Law is concerned, any theft exceeding a value of $400 is considered Grand Theft, which can be prosecuted as a misdemeanor or a felony. It's at the discretion of the prosecution. I can guarantee that if this bat is recovered later on, I will definitely push for a felony. A felony conviction carries a penalty of 16 months to 3 years in jail plus court fines, restitution and probation after the jail sentence is served. I simply don't see how this can turn out well for the person who stole the bat from me if they are caught later on!

Anyway, I am extending an amnesty period of a few days while I continue to work with the police department to recover any video surveillance of the area. This includes surveillance of the actual infraction point, and also the surrounding areas that might show someone walking away with the bat. I am offering 100% confidentiality if you come forward and return the bat to me, and I will promptly cancel the police report and investigation. And, anyone on this thread who knows me knows that my word counts!

If anyone wishes to contact me directly, you can e-mail me at: loumud@yahoo.com or you can call me on my cell phone at 619-952-0033.

Again, for now, I am promising to keep this 100% confidential. I just want to get the bat returned to me. Besides the obvious monetary value, it also has a lot of sentimental value to me as well.

Thanks again for everyone's support. I have received a few tips thus far that point to one person, and I'm hoping video surveillance will eventually confirm it...

Hey Lou,
Sorry to read about your loss. I dont go down there as much as the others but when I do get the chance I will definitley keep an eye out and an ear out. People that have to steal stuff get under my skin. Nobody seems to remember that if you want something you dont just take it, you work for it. I'm with ya on this , lets find the dirtbag that stole it.
