I tried the sharpie paint pens. They are terrible. Bled everywhere and were a pain to get working right when you need them. The gold one worked for me but when I needed it, it came out all spotty.

The sharpie metallic silver is my go to for those types of things but it may not put down enough ink for your liking.

There is another type of pen which is like the sharpie paint pen but works a lot better. You can get it at Michaels but I don't know the name of it (look through this forum as some have mentioned it before).

Seriously, anyone know what kind of pen/marker I should use? Thanks!

Silver looks amazing on those baseballs... I would recommend Deco Paint Pens... thats all I use... I know that people are saying that you cant get them in town now but you can order them online here http://www.artsuppliesonline.com/catalog.cfm?cata_id=9036 and I would suggest getting a few that way it make the S/H charge more resonable even though to me the $6 charge isn't bad :)

If you don't want to go that way you could try Elmers Paint Pens

I think all of you's are high strung! Just go out and graph, where's the sense of adventure. If some of you don't want to put in your time, then you shouldn't graph and just go to the paid signings.

Nice successes - I got James Loney & Jay Gibbons from the Dogs. I'm going tonight to try to graph the Giants...I hear Lincecum is a good signer so I'll try to get him.

Anyone have any luck for the last time this year with the Dodgers? I didn't have the greatest luck in the world but I was able to get Furcal and Torre on Tuesday night. I got Torre on some old Dodgers board that I have other graphs from previous years. With Furcal I lucked out and he just signed mine and went into the clubhouse, But sucks when he threw my pen back it made a mark on the ball, duigout and my shirt. I did get Don Mattingly on my ticket stub but I don't even know where that is. My kid prob took it.

Anyone going to the Giants, I doubt I will hit the pavement but just hit up bp.

Yeah every time I have gone to a Giants game where he wasn't pitching he signed. He is always cool about it and sticks around to get them done. I think I was able to get him 4 times so far this year.

I'm hoping to get him and Buster Posey. Not sure how good of a signer he is but those are the two I'd like for my collection. I'm glad to hear he is a good signer...look forward to graphin' him!

Good luck with Posey. He was tough at the end of last year when no one even knew who he was. I've seen on other collecting sites that he's hardly signed at all since getting called up earlier this year...

Twice- once on my team ball by the dugout on the right side and once by the dugout when he walked in after bp.

I've also seen several other people get him.

Would it probably be another Padres player (current)?

We did get one of the current Padres players to come in from 5-5:30pm. He will be signing for FREE. We are not going to tell anyone who the suprise guest will be, so please do not ask. I will tell you that it is not Webb, Adrian, Durango, Denofria, Cunningham, Thatcher or Mujica. Adams and Richard will also be there and it is not Bell or Latos because they are coming in November. That should narrow down the list for you guys. I hope to see you at the opening of our new store.

It's not an opinion, it's a fact. But, I will admit that Hundley doesn't sign every single home game like Headley and Eck. I guess it depends on what games you go to, but I've never had any problems getting Hundley this season. Yesterday before the game he even came out and walked back outside the player's entrance after he parked, and signed for everyone there. He's always seemed like one of the nicest guys on the team to me in the past...

Fairly decent series against the Reds this weekend. I was lucky enough to get Aroldis Chapman twice on 2 rookie refractor cards yesterday. Some other highlights include Bronson Arroyo, Jay Bruce, Jim Edmonds, Orlando Cabrera, Scott Rolen, Aaron Harang and Laynce Nix.

Unfortunately, I didn't see Votto or Brandon Phillips pick up a pen the entire series. I even had Votto one-on-one by the dugout before Sunday's game when he did a quick interview with FOX, and he completely ignored me when I asked him to sign after he was finished, even though he had looked over at me several times during the interview itself. He's kind of a strange cat...

I agree it depends on the games. I've only seen Hundley sign twice inside and I've seen Tejada sign 10 times. So it's hit or miss.

Lou ... is Bronson Arroyo's autograph really just B A??

Yep! Believe it or not, he has carpal tunnel syndrome and physically can't sign his full name, especially for a large group of collectors in one setting. How he can still pitch is beyond me? He also explained to us how his condition prevents him from playing guitar, which is another big love in his life. I feel for him, but anyone needing Arroyo on anything in the future should know that you'll get the 'BA' if you're able to get him at all!

Sorry about Richard and Adams being late, their agent gave them the address in RB. They drove all the way to our old store and back down to the mall. So I tried doing some research about the Gwynn signing at the Air Show this weekend... but the Facebook Event post is all I could find that talked about it. Does anyone have any more information about it? Or did anyone go to last year's? (If there was one last year, I mean...)

I hope that isn't too many questions! Hahaha. And for future reference (if anyone cares) Tony Gwynn's website, www.tonygwynn.com, isn't worth much information wise... :/

In case anybody is interested or is going to be in the area, Matt Kemp of the LA Dodgers will be doing a free signing at:

October 2, 2010
10am
Living Spaces
14400 Arminta St
Van Nuys, Ca 92618

If you go, make sure to go about forever early (I recommend getting there no later than 5:00AM). And expect to put up with 10,000 Dodger fans cutting, screaming, being generally obnoxious, etc. But, he will sign for the full hour. About 200 people will get autographs.

Personally I'll stick to Tony Gwynn at the Airshow!

Looks like Tony Gwynn Sr. is going to be at the Miramar Air Show again this year along with Jr.

Unfortunately it looks like both Gwynns have canceled for the Air Show  Jr. was a given considering the Padres are playing in SF this weekend, but I'm not sure why Sr. did too. I got a message on Facebook from one of the reservists about it, and it looks like they have taken the event off of their calendar. He did say that they will have someone else there, but didn't specify who. I'll keep you all posted as I learn more...

I got David Eckstein on a photo before the game. He signed for quite a bit while it was raining.

I thought that it was interesting to see him yesterday. He is a serious routine guy, and always signs for 3 or 4 minutes before he stretches on the right field line. Due to the rain, he had to go through his routine twice, and sure enough, signed twice on the right field line.

speaking of eckstein, has anyone ever gotten an "06 WS MVP" inscription out of him? ive asked him for it on a ball & a WS photo, but he's denied me both times. am i the only one that he denies? or is he on a special contract that restricts him from doing it?

I'm glad that I didn't go. That would of been a big time waster. After waiting for more than one hour in the heat, my patience and persistence paid off yesterday as I was fortunate enough to convince the Air Force Rep to allow me to get the following items signed by Mr. Winslow:

Air Coryell TB Mini Helmet (need Joiner)

Just got back from PetCo following the team's return from SF. The buses pulled in around 8:45 pm. Some of the players acknowledged the fans while most seemed down and out. Mark Grant and Heath Bell came over to socialize with the fans who showed up (+/- 50 fans). Many got in their cars and drove away waiving good-bye (Adrian included). Here's my take for the night:

x5 Mark Grant cards
x2 Heath Bell baseballs

Others who signed were Chris Young and Will Venable. Can't wait 'til February 2011...

just throwing this out there for the hockey fans, since it does involve sdsu baseball.
wayne gretzkys son trevor recently commited to sdsu for baseball. i figure his dad might sit in on a couple of his games here and there like greg vaughn did....might be an oppurtunity to get an all-time great.

That's good news, but a lot can change between now and the 2011 SDSU baseball season. I hope he follows through on it and shows up next year.

This thread gets pretty boring in the off season, so I'll post about my experience earlier today. I decided to head out to the Carly Fiorina rally at the Veteran's Memorial this morning, mainly to finally get to meet my fellow alum and a true war hero - John McCain. I was able to get him to sign my Time magazine that I've had for a couple of years now after the rally ended and they headed out to do some interviews. Not the best in-person signature in the world, but it was still cool to finally meet this truly great American! (His wife Cindy also looks pretty darn good in-person for her age :D)

Just saw this in the Reader. Not sports-related but for those of you who collect Hollywood, legendary actor Dan Aykroyd is going to make an appearance tomorrow, Saturday Oct. 23rd, at 2:00 pm at Albertsons Market in Clairemont (5950 Balboa Ave). He's going to be promoting and signing bottles of his new line Crystal Head vodka. Not sure if he'll be signing outside items, but I'll be there trying to get him to sign my Ghostbusters cast photo (previously signed only by Ernie Hudson) that I've had for years. Enjoy!

With all the gloom from the Pacman no-shows this weekend, I'll share my success with Dan Aykroyd yesterday. There were a lot more people there than I thought would show, and the line moved really slowly. But, I eventually got my turn. He was really cool and gladly signed my photo switching to my blue Sharpie from the black one he had in-hand. He was there to sign bottles of his vodka, but he gladly signed outside items for people and even multiples if you had them. He also took lots of pictures with people, hence the slow-moving line. All in all, though, well worth the wait to meet this Hollywood icon in-person!

He may have been 'humbled' by his injury because he certainly wasn't a very nice guy to collectors before that. His edge started near the end of his playing time at SDSU, and his signing habits went down hill from there as he progressed up to the majors. I heard he was next to impossible to get in D.C. after he got called up to the majors...

It's amazing to me everytime on how quickly opinions change on a person / player.

Step away from the keyboard and ask yourself the following questions...

how many autographs did Strasburg sign for you at state?

how many do you really need?

did you ask for an inscription as well?

did you keep them all or dump them on ebay when he got hot?

step away from your higher then mighty attitudes...you're being hypocritical...there is only 2 types of players...hard or easy...and that can change by day, moment, or person asking them over and over again, time of day, how many people are there, etc.

I hate to burst your bubbles, but you're all not perfect, as we all have flaws, we all have moments, and sometimes we're just to busy to do everything in life and have to say "No"

as for me...

Strasburg...2 games...asked both games...got him after the BYU game on 2 balls (1 for me, 1 for a friend in Minnesota)...other game I went to he said "No" after getting abused by ebay dealers like Franco858...at this point just the 1 until he comes out in a card set I'm collecting...no inscriptions as I find them moronic...still on my desk as in my opinion it only has personal worth...

will I ask him again...yes

will I think any differently of him if he blows me off...no

is he hard or easy...easier then most...probably wouldn't crack my top 100 most difficult.

Wow, Clubnuts, that's a hefty dissertation from someone I don't ever recall posting on this board before! Let me start off by adding an additional pat on your back for only approaching Strasburg twice in the past and having 2 successes, both being when he was still at State and still relatively easy to get. I'm happy to hear that he didn't pierce your '100 most difficult' list!

Practically speaking though, let me ask you this - just as a player's career progresses, isn't it possible that sometimes a collector's collection progress in turn? Case in point, a lot of people on this thread are HUGE collectors of Tony Gwynn. Imagine the limited items we could have possibly wanted him to sign during his rookie year compared to the items we would have wanted him on when he retired?

As Strasburg was drafted and progressed through the minors there were minor league cards people wanted him on, and now he has Bowman and Topps cards as well, not to mention Photo File pictures, etc. Just as the card companies are pimping him out right now, MLB and associated companies are doing the same. As long as he's in the majors there are things that are going to be churned out each year that people want him on.

Any true collector on here does not get their feelings hurt by being rejected for an autograph in one setting. Most of us are adults and realize that certain people have their 'days.' However, the true collectors on this forum are also members of other national forums, and we get feedback from other collectors nationwide. So, our opinions aren't just formulated by our own personal in-person experiences, but are also compared to other peoples' experiences throughout the country.

STEP BACK AWAY FROM YOUR KEYBOARD AND CONSIDER THIS: at the end of the day your collection is your collection, and if you're happy with it then that's all that matters. So, if someone likes inscriptions and personalization with their autos, who are you to say otherwise? If you have an opportunity to get an inscription if you ask for it and you don't ask for it, then I think you're MORONIC for not asking for it. But that's just me. It doesn't make one better than the other.

Will I think any different if Strasburg blows me off in-person in the future - no. Will I think different if Strasburg blows me off 100 times in the future - yes! Fortunately we're in the digital age and I don't have to go through that sort of prolonged torture. I can depend on feedback from other collectors throughout the country to help formulate my overall opinion about a certain player's signing habits.

Anyway, I've spent WAY too much time on this, but Clubnuts you're not going to find too many friends on this forum with what you posted above. You're certainly not perfect either!!!

Not only is this a waste of forum space, It's a waste of time. We all ask for an autograph because it's our passion and our hobby. The fact that you feel this ways proves how naive you are. If you feel that asking for an autograph is such a sin then why are you into Philography in the first place?

Go Maury Povich someone on your own time. I might be 15 years old, but it doesn't take an adult to recognize such a absent minded human being.

I'll be going out there twice. My son and I will be in Peoria on Feb. 18-20 (Fri-Sun)...he can't miss too much school so it'll be a short trip.

I'll return Feb. 23-March 1. With some of the teams starting early, it kinda threw a "monkey wrench" into my plans. I figured when the games start (for those teams affected), I'll visit the other camps who will start later that week. I don't feel like competing with the crowd and other "collectors" at the games.

I decided to take a leisurely stroll today to Long Beach and attend Glamourcon 50, which is a convention geared towards models/photographers/Playmates, etc. I mainly went to try and get Hugh Hefner, but there were some other benefits to going as well. Hef made a rare signing appearance in which he was signing strictly 1-per, and he signed any item you had for free. He was also nice enough to take pictures with people as well. The event staff were Nazis about everything and it was a numbered/ticketed event, but it actually helped the line go relatively smoothly. I was also able to get Tera Patrick on several items, and got a photo with her as well. Her usual henchman/husband wasn't there with her, so it was a little more pleasant experience than in previous venues. She signed whatever you had in whatever color you wanted. There were also tons of other Playmates there, so this show was a gold mine for anyone who collects signed Playboys. It was my first experience at Glamourcon, and I must say that it was definitely worth the drive!

Don't forget about the signing with Sara Jean Underwood & Nick Hundley This Saturday. Nick will be signing one FREE autograph per person

To start I just want to make it clear that this isn't intended to be derogatory towards AIA or Sean. I've gotten a few items signed through them in the past and everything has come out great and I hope to get stuff done with them in the future.

I picked up my ball today and while it's clean and centered pretty well, Mat's signature is a good amount smaller than what I had envisioned. I expected the autograph to fill the sweetspot of the ball for the most part. I've gotten him IP and wanted an additional ball for my collection and that autograph was much bigger. Just wanted to see if anyone had similar results or if maybe that's just how he signs at sit downs.

Once again I appreciate what AIA and Sean do for us collectors and I just wanted to know if anyone got similar results.

Yes, I got the same exact small auto from him in-person on 2 different baseballs at the last AIA signing. It has nothing to do with AIA, it's just how Mat seems to sign baseballs at paid signings. I've seen some baseballs that people have gotten signed by him in-person at the park or at Spring Training, and he seems to sign slightly larger in those settings. I got a photo signed by him in Spring training where the auto came out a little bigger than another photo I got signed at the last AIA signing as well. I guess he just signs a little smaller in a controlled environment where he is sitting down taking his time to sign. There's no real rhyme or reason about it, it just is what it is...

Went out to Warwick's Books in La Jolla yesterday to get Olympian and Dancing with the Stars winner Apolo Ohno. I heard it was one of 3 or 4 appearances he made in the SD area yesterday. The ticket said no outside memorabilia was allowed, and Warwick's is usually pretty strict about that. But, his personal handlers were cool and gladly handed him my outside items to sign, even having him switch pens for me as I requested. Got a total of 1 book, 2 8x10s and a full Sports Illustrated magazine signed in blue Sharpie. Really happy at how they turned out!

I got an e-mail from the same people that do the Drew Brees (formerly Stan Humphries) Golf Tournament. They are having a benefit walk on SDSU next month with Steven Strasburg and Tony Gwynn. It sounds like SDSU baseball team will be there too.

http://www.strasburg5k.com/

It does say this however:
** Please note: SDSU Baseball Team will be available for autographs following the race. No memorabilia is permitted on the property nor will it be signed.

So... what does that mean for getting autographs if you can't bring anything in? Do you even get to meet Tony at this event?

Apparently, security will be positioning themselves next to the players as they sign (at a table). Any "outside" item you drop on the players will be intercepted by them and given back you by security. I had a "source" give me a heads-up...although it could change...that is the initial game plan. TG's access will also be "limited" as he now uses a walker to get around and its doubtful (at this point) if he will be signing.

Thanks for the info...so what are they going to sign? The paper # that they give you to put on your shirt for the run? lol...

I went to the Cox store in Escondido today to ask about Tony Gwynn Jr. They said that he will still be there even though he is a free agent today. You can take pictures But if there is alot of people, then you will not beable to take a picture with him, but you can take his picture. I also asked about how many autographs you were allowed to get. The man said he didn't know because they don't know how many people will be there. So take a few items and kind of play it by ear. Hope this helps with this info. See you there!

I hit up the Tony Gwynn Jr.s signing yesterday. I saw a number of threaders out there. The turn out was decent. They were fairly strict about the 1 per, but you could step back in line. Unfortunately, I didn't have the flexibility to get back in line, so I only got three autos with my family the one time through. I also lost control of the situation and ended up with my cards signed in black (oh well).

Lastly, there was a pleasant surprise and Jane Mitchell from Channel 4 was there giving away free signed copies of her new book to the first 40 people.

Couldn't believe he signed his 71 RC and a ball...thrilled with that one! How many times did we hear "No Sorry!" throughout the year?

I thought it was a goner since he moved on to Seattle, but got it back today. Crazy!

Nice job, man. Ted's next to impossible IP. If anyone is interested, someone on SCN is organizing a private signing with Simmons sometime in May. Cards $18, Photos up to 11x14 $20, balls $25, and inscriptions $10. Not too bad of a deal considering how tough he is!

If anyone collects Olympic sports.

The convention center is holding a softball convention there this week.

And most of the US Olympic softball players are going to be there. Don't think Jennie Finch will be. But I am headed down there tomorrow for Cat Osterman and Jessica Mendoza.

NFCA.org doesn't say when there does not make mention about but I seen each of their twitters that says they are there.

(Correction Finch will be there also.)

Yes, Jennie Finch is there right now, but she posted on Twitter that she's heading to a camp in Minnesota this weekend. So, I wouldn't expect her to be here in SD past tomorrow morning (Friday)...

not sure. It could very well be a preprint....the site also says there will also be former Aztecs there...besides Tony Gwynn, who else do you think might show up? I'm thinking maybe bud black....

I was at the SDSU basketball game last night. They had a table out front promoting the walk. I asked if the photos of Strasburg were preprints or did he actually sit down and sign them all, and they told me that he indeed sat down and signed every single one of them. They had a couple examples and it did look like they were not PP or AP (but it was dark so I won't swear to it, that's just what they told me).

They showed Strasburg on the monitor there but I couldn't find him in the crowd! I felt like I was playing "Where's Waldo" with no hope of winning...finally the game ended and still couldn't find him. I was really bummed. :(

Happy Holidays to everyone!

I wanted to reach out and let you know the Padres have announced via twitter that they will have a an impromptu meet up for fans on Wed 12/15 from 11:15 to 11:45. Those scheduled to be in attendance include Mat Latos, Luke Gregerson, Will Venable, Nick Hundley and others.

I realize some of you are out of towners, and others work during the day, but for those of you that are local and available to meet up, send me a message with your contact info and I'll keep you in the loop.

The location is secret at this point, but will be announced tomorrow morning via www.twitter.com/sdpadres...

I look forward to hearing from many of you and seeing you soon.

Good day for graphing in SD! I started off the day during lunchtime heading down to AIA to drop off a couple of items for Sean to get signed by True Blood star and Playboy cover model Natasha Alam during his private signing with her on Wednesday. I then went up MCAS Miramar for the R. Lee Ermey signing to get a few photos done. The line went extremely slow, but I spent no more than an hour to get through. He even jokingly commented that he could tell I was a 'professional collector' since I had my own blue pen ready to go (he had a black sharpie for everything else he was signing), but he gladly signed everything I had (3 8x10s plus 1 of his own). I didn't feel too bad, though, since some people in front of me literally had a dozen or so things for him to sign.

Later this evening I headed down to the charity event at Paradise Point that Adrian Gonzalez made an appearance at in the hopes that I might be able to at least get 1 item done. To my surprise I only saw one other local collector I know there. I thought there would be at least a handful of other collectors in attendance. I hung back for a while to check things out, and saw that Adrian was in a great mood signing multiples for people and taking dozens of pictures. It was definitely amateur night, though, since some people were literally giving him crumpled pieces of paper to sign! But, to each their own. Dexter and I hit him up together, and I was surprised that he took my book and knocked out all 3 cards on it without evening flinching. He even stated that the 2001 Bowman is his favorite card ever, and quizzed me on why I though that was. After looking closer I noticed that it has him listed as a short stop, and he jokingly said "exactly!" since he's always played first base. In hindsight I wish I had also brought some other items with me since I probably could have gotten those done with an additional donation to the charity. But, I was only expecting to get 1 item done max, so everything else was gravy! Plus, the $35 admission charge went to a good cause (and is also tax deductible).

Typically it's not. You have to be affiliated with the military to get in (Active Duty, Retired, Family-Dependent), and last time I knew they weren't letting civilians in to meet him. It's normally a salute to the troops and their families type of thing, but if you have any friends or family with Military IDs, they can sponsor you to get on base.

The Jack In The Box signing today was GREAT!! They did a fantastic job. There were only about 20 - 30 fans there, and I parked in the lot and walked right up. 30 seconds later, Nick Hundley, Luke Gregerson, and Will Venable walked off a little rent-a-bus parked right in front. They were VERY personable, talked with us for a long time, posed for pictures and signed tons of autographs. Matt Latos and Tim Stauffer came in about a minute after the other guys. Matt was great, SS balls with no personalization and full signature. All chatted, shook hands and were very, very nice. This was one of the best events I have ever been to!

I stopped by the Hundley signing. He was a few minutes late and spent the first 30 minutes on the radio. Around 12:45 he started signing. There were only ~15 people there waiting, so he happily signed whatever we had.

After seeing the prices Giants players are getting for autographs at the GTSM show after winning the World Series I almost hope the Padres don't win it. Almost.

http://gtsportsmarketing.com/sj2011/

Yeah Cody Ross is going to be like $100 + inscriptions, Buster Posey $150 + for ROY inscription. I'll take my chances IP at a game. I know Posey doesn't sign much, but he does sign. It's pretty crazy...I don't see us fans in SD paying those prices even if the Padres won.

Agreed! As long as people are dumb enough to pay these ridiculous prices, GTSM is going to keep gouging the hobby like this. Posey's good, but come on - $150? He hasn't even played a full season in the majors yet. You can get a lot of HOFers for much less than $100!

Completely agreed about the HOFers you can get for WAY less. I just got Nolan Ryan back TTM for $55 with a hologram. I'm not saying Buster Posey won't be a HOFer someday, but I totally agree that he has less than 1 year under his belt! I was in CJ's the other day and she mentioned she'd be taking items up...I couldn't help but blurt out "not mine at Posey's prices! Did you see that he's $150 for a ball?" I know he has an exclusive contract, but come on!

Cody Ross is $75 + $20 (just checked). Instead of that, how about going to Soup's Sports Grill next time any of us is in Woodland Hills? I went a little while back, and Jeff Suppan was there and signed a ball for me with his 2006 NLCS MVP inscription, in person, for free. He also signed a bobblehead, 8x10, and 2 cards. Couldn't beat that price! $7.95 for lunch and a drink, and got way more than .05 seconds with him!

CJ's in Poway is having a signing with Randy Jones on February 19th for anybody who's interested. It's $20 per autograph... or you can go to Fanfest a week earlier (that's where I got an autograph from him last year)

I'm not planning on going but according to the website:

"No memorabilia is permitted on the property nor will it be signed."

According to xtra-innings "Apparently, security will be positioning themselves next to the players as they sign (at a table). Any "outside" item you drop on the players will be intercepted by them and given back you by security. I had a "source" give me a heads-up...although it could change...that is the initial game plan"

If you did pay the $35/$40 registration fee it sounds as if you do get a "FREE Authentic, Hand-Signed, Autographed Stephen Strasburg photo" capnsteve2 saw them and said this "They had a table out front promoting the walk. I asked if the photos of Strasburg were preprints or did he actually sit down and sign them all, and they told me that he indeed sat down and signed every single one of them. They had a couple examples and it did look like they were not PP or AP (but it was dark so I won't swear to it, that's just what they told me)."

I'm not sure if you were to get Stras one-on-one if he would sign. I also am not sure if the players are in a seperate area that only walkers/runners can be in. If you do go give us a report!

I plan on being in attendance, and all I can say from previous experience is that you never know until you try. From how it sounds right now, the odds of you getting outside items signed are pretty slim. But, on the day of the event a lot is riding on the mood of the actual signers, and also on the the experience of the handlers. So, my recommendation is to just head out to the event and see how it goes. Nothing in this hobby is 100% guaranteed, regardless of how the event is advertised...

As long as it's not creased I would recommend putting it in a toploader and letting it sit for several months, maybe with a little weight on top of it. Or, if you're going to frame the photo you might be able to have the photo mounted onto a backing board, which should make it perfectly flat again...

Agreed, but it really depends on the extent of the damage a lot of times. Photos overall can be really difficult to deal with if not handled properly. Sometimes if they get slightly wrinkled, it's just best to keep them in toploaders forever if you're not going to frame them. Situations like this really make you appreciate handling your photos as carefully as possible when getting them signed. But, many times it's just way out of your control - especially if the celebrity you're targeting is getting mobbed. That's why I prefer 8x10s. They are much more easier to handle than 11x14s or 16x20s in a public setting, and there's much less left for chance with them than larger prints...

In regards to the National Baseball expo, here are some updates.

They will not be releasing an autograph schedule. "We want this to be about the entire experience, not just signings."

However, I have confirmed that Omar Vizquel will be there on Saturday.

Additionally, Latos and Hundley have committed to the event. No word on when.

They have a meeting with the Padres tomorrow to confirm additional attendees.

Randy Jones has confirmed that he will be there on Sunday.

Ticket prices appear to be $10 per day to get in the doors.

Ian,

Yeah, I hear you...but I did not get one Gonzo auto from 2006 - 2009. I wasn't really collecting during that hiatus, so I am trying to make up for some lost time! After splitting items with the people who went with me last time, I kept a signed jersey, 1 mini helmet and 2 ice cream helmets, and 3 balls.

He was my favorite player throughout the whole time, so I definitely want to add a couple more before he's "gonzo". (Sorry, I can't help the lame jokes).

I too feel like the event is going to be a little weird. But I'm gunna go and give it a whirl. Who else is going?

"Don't forget about the National Baseball Expo at the Del Mar Fairgrounds this weekend. Come meet Heath Bell and Mat Latos on Saturday 1/15 between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.! On Sunday 1/16, Randy Jones and Will Venable will be there from 1-2 p.m."

I think everyone is reading too far into this and making judgments prematurely about this event ahead of time. This is just like any other autograph venue - they may enforce what they are 'saying' their policy is, and they might not. I've been to events that specifically advertised no outside items would be allowed, and I was able to totally rack at those same events. Sometimes they say things ahead of time to dissuade people from bringing outside items, but don't actually enforce the policy at the event. For this I am going to take my chances and bring my own items to get signed - especially since I've never been able to get Vizquel in-person before. To me it's worth the risk. The only thing the player can do is say no, but I'm going to find out from the player himself rather than from some clueless Elite security guard. Nothing in this hobby is ever guaranteed. Sometimes you just need to go and try it out. It's also often times better to beg for forgiveness after the fact than to ask for permission ahead of time...

Do Diamond baseballs look any different than Rawlings balls? Are they going to inspect each baseball?
I played Youth baseball growing up and we used Diamond...I think the Stitching is a lot thicker than the Rawlings MLB balls, and I don't think it will be that hard to switch them if u really have a problem with getting the diamond signed. Believe it or not though, most baseballs aren't made for us graphers to get signed, they are made to be used in the game of baseball.

Busy day today. Tried out the 5K this morning, but it was a bust for getting on Strasburg on any outside items (see harrid4's post above). I didn't see Tony anywhere either, although I heard he was there for a little while when everyone was running/walking the 5K.

I then headed over to the Baseball Expo. It was a lot smaller than I imagined it would be, but it was fairly well-organized. In the morning I got Latos on 3 8x10s and 2 sweetspot ROMLBs with some extra help, and a card later on in the afternoon. He didn't personalize anything, or give his 'variant' signature on cards. He signed in the morning and then again at 4:15 when they started the afternoon signing session. The handlers kept telling everyone that it was only 1-per, and that the players would only signing the crappy Diamond baseballs (although they didn't specifically state that they were 'crappy' ;)). But, the players signed pretty much whatever you put in front of them within reason, except for Vizquel who only signed 2 of my 3 cards on the first go-around. I asked if he would be kind enough to knock out the third card, which was his Topps rookie card, but he declined. It was one heck of a long day, so I'll post photos tomorrow.

Here's my overall take for the day:
Latos 6/6
Quilvio Veras 3/3 cards
Carlos Hernandez 1/1 card
Vizquel 3/4 (2 cards and a ball)

I also attended the Baseball Expo today and did well. Got each of the players on my items and the players were very nice. No egos in attendance. Got Reggie, Omar, Quilvio, Heath and Latos

As for our only possible all-stars for 2011, Heath was his charming, playful self he always is. What has happened to Latos? He went from an angry signer with an EBay lecture to anyone asking for a signature, to a pleasant person who kids around with the big kids (adults… the graphers). When he saw the Aflac photo of him when he was 17 he was a little embarrassed. But he joked about it, showed Heath and said. “This is what my arms looked like before the tats”. He even stuck around and signed at the end of the event. Please believe me; I’m not complaining just a little surprised and very happy because I think he is going to be a great player and I’d like to get his signature on a few items before he is traded away

From Randy Jones via Facebook: "Promising Padre outfielder Will Venable joins us tomorrow at the Randy Jones All American Sports Grill at 1:00pm. Join us after the show for drinks and appetizers from 3-6pm to celebrate my birthday. Great specials plus a chance to check out my Cy Young Award from 1976."

The expo was a small event. I got there a few minutes before they opened the doors and the turn out wasn't that great. I think there were probably 30-40 people in front of me after I purchased my ticket.

Both CJ's and AIA were vending. CJ's gave out some Tony Gwynn plates/pins and incomplete trading card sets from 1987 and 1988.

I jumped in line for Latos and Bell at about 11am and there was about 8 people in front of me, so I was good. A few minutes later, they told us that they were going to move the line away from the walkway, so that we don't block the people coming in from the entrance. The line eventually grew as it got closer to 11:30am and they had barricades set up, like an amusement park, the line zig-zagged.

The volunteers for the show tried to sell the "Diamond" baseballs that were supposely the only baseballs the guests were going to sign and most people bought into it. I decided to try my luck with the Rawlings baseballs that I bought that morning from Target. Funny thing is, one of the vendors, not sure who, were also selling the very same baseballs at their booth!

Both Latos and Bell arrived on time, and appeared to be in good spirit. They each signed a Rawlings baseball with no problem!

Hmm I wonder what Padres players will be at the Town Hall meeting and which will be at the bowling? It's quite possible that Adrian Gonzalez will attend the Padres dinner the day before his event.

Hey Random,

At the natl baseball expo, I asked Edgar Gonzalez who would be at the bowling event. He said Latos, Hudley, Venable, Adrian, himself, also Ryan Matthews and a couple other Chargers.

Next week is gonna be busy!

The tickets for spectators state that you can meet the celebrities/guests as well, since proceeds from the ticket sales will benefit the charity.

I decided to take a leisurely stroll out to Palm Desert on Wednesday to check out the Bob Hope Classic, which had a pretty impressive lineup of celebrities confirmed. I heard the event had been pretty tough to get outside items signed at over the past few years, but I figured I would try it out anyway. I was able to get a modest haul done before a couple of waaayyy too serious security guards, probably working on their Junior G-Man merit badges, cracked down and started escorting people out for having outside memorabilia. They asked me to take my items back to the car, and said that they would kick me out for good if I returned with any prohibited items. I was like, "sure buddy." That's like asking an avid hunter to take his guns back to the car, and then happily return unarmed to a valley full of succulent deer running around!

Anyway, I was happy to finally get Greg Maddux IP since he has been my 'white whale' throughout my collecting career. However, I was only able to get him on my program since one of the Nazi security guards was standing right over him the whole time, which was unfortunate since the auto actually came out really a nice for Maddux. Evan Longoria was also pretty nice this time around too. I got him at an event last year, and he was clearly annoyed by the 5 of us there asking for his auto. This time he signed for about 20 of us after finishing up on the driving range before taking off to start his round, and he actually took his time signing each item. Dr. J was a bit elusive at first, but broke down about half way through the day and started signing a lot for people. He signed some items 'Dr. J' at first, and then started signing everything else with his full name. I got him on 2 8x10s, and he was the last big name I was able to get before security started cracking down. Sugar Ray Leonard was also a no-show on Wednesday, which was unfortunate since I had a lot of items for him. By the end of the day the course was locked down like Fort Knox, with 1 or 2 policemen at each hole on top of other various forms of security guards. I probably could have done a little better overall if I were a bit more aggressive, but I was a bit sheepish always looking out for security since I didn't want to get kicked out prematurely. Still a decent haul that made the trip worth while, especially since I had considered paying full price at a show a while back to get Longoria on this card!

Alice Cooper - 2/2 on 8x10s
Don Felder (Eagles guitarist) - 2/2 8x10s
Dr. J - 2/2 8x10s (1 signed 'Dr. J' and 1 with full name)
Greg Maddux - 1/6 event program
Grant Fuhr - 1/1 card
Evan Longoria - 1/2 RC refractor card
Rob Morrow (Numbers and The Whole Truth) - 1/1 8x10
John O'Hurley (Seinfeld) - 1/1 8x10
Bill Haas (2010 tournament winner) - 1/1 event program

Guess there's some prospects down at Petco. Anyone going to try to graph them on the way in/out? Or know who they are?

They have an article in the paper today providing details. To summarize, the program goes through this coming Thursday. It is from 7:30 AM to 4:30. I don't think it is open to the public. Most of it is meetings, but they do have 2.5 hours of field practice each day.

Attendees include Simon Castro, Jeremy Hefner, Casey Kelly, Matt Lollis, Juan Oramas, Jason Hagerty, Matt Clark, Anthony Rizzo, Drew Cumberland, Jeudy Valdez, Logan Forsythe, James Darnell, Jedd Gyorko, Edinson Rincon, Jaff Decker, Reymond Fuentes, Rico Noel,
Donavan Tate, ad Blake Tekotte.

If anyone has already gone or plans to go, please let me know how things work (what entrance are they coming in, etc). I'm thinking of heading down.

Of course, given that it ends on Thursday, there is a good chance that a number of these guys are going to stick around for the open house on Thursday evening (they have been advertising that Padres prospects will be there).

Got there a few minutes before 8am and the line was pretty long, it was about at least 50 people deep! According to one of the employees, supposely the first few people camped out at around 1am to secure their spots!

Saw some regular collectors from SD. What was weird was that they kept doing a head count up and down the line, telling us that they would cap it at 200. But of course it never happened as it got closer to the signing time, the front of the line GREW, as friends/families jumped in line, pushing everyone behind them even further!

They should have given out the wristbands when they were doing headcounts earlier in the morning, not as we got closer to the entrance. A ton of people jumped, but they can't and won't do anything about it.

Wanted to get a ball and bat, but they were pretty strict about it, so I got the Big Stick bat signed. Rose added the inscription w/o me asking, which is "4,256 Hit King"

Lots of people were able to jump back in line for another round, but I had to get to Frank & Sons for the Stan Lee signing. The line was crazy long, they had barricades set up like it was a Magic Mountain ride, zig zagging! Got a poster of Amazing Fantasy 15 (Spiderman's very 1st appearance), three comic books, and an 8x10 of Stan and I taken last October in Long Beach, all signed.

I've gone 3 or 4 times. The players arrive on a bus and come in. They usually go on stage and Buddy (I also went when Bruce was here) will talk and the players will take questions. Then the players sit at the tables and talk to the fan and eat lunch with them. During which they will usually sign for the fans.

This is the way it went the 4 times over the last 7 years I’ve attended. I did not go last years so there may be changes.

Each year I went there were about 10 players there. If memory serves me… Peavy, C.Young, M.Cameron, Tony Gwynn Jr, have attended in the past.

You get a pretty good lunch and most of the tables have a player. If you are going you need to get your ticket ahead of time. It's sold out each time I've gone

Hope this helps

Mike Cameron GU Signed helmet
Tadahito Iguchi GU bat
Jim Edmonds GU Signed jersey

But It's helping me fund my trip to Boston for the series out there, and a couple games in NY, Philly, and Baltimore after. Sucks to see some stuff go, but they all went to much better homes

It was a busy day today. I hit up TP this morning for about 3 hours. I got there right around 11:00AM so I missed a lot of the action, but still bought a flag and managed to get some good guys. I ended up with:

Villegas
Singh
KJ Choi
Justin Rose
Ben Crane
Stuart Appleby
Rich Beem
Kevin Stadler
Rory Sabbatini
Frederick Jacobson
Nick Watney
Marc Leishman
Andres Gonzalez

Later, I hit up the Padres awards dinner. Only 3 other people there total seeking autographs in front. First guy to walk down is Dave Winfield. "Sorry, I'm not signing, unless you come in." Thanks, Dave, but for $200, I passed!

Most others were pretty cool about signing. All of the prospects were there including Kelly, Rizzo and Tate. In all, I ended up with:

Black x2
Tate x1
Hundley x1
Bell x1
Stauffer x2

Venable didn't see us, Latos just cruised right on in, and Glen Hoffman passed us going in the other way. We couldn't get Kelly or Rizzo to come over but they also couldn't really see us the way they had it set up.

I totally blew O-Dog. What a rookie move. I wasn't expecting him at all and didn't believe my eyes when he walked by. He would have signed as nobody was with him and he was kinda looking at me. I ended up not asking him if he was Orlando Hudson...and then Buddy Black confirmed that he was. I only had 7 things for him to sign

But all in all a good day. Drop me a PM if you are going to the Gonzalez Bowling Event tomorrow!

Dude! Hudson!!!

I wonder if he will show up at the town hall tommorow?

That would be badass!

I think I am hitting up the town hall because it's free and not as far as the bowling. Unfortunately, I will miss my last chance at Adrian Gonzalez!

Oh well, how do you prepare for the town hall?

Only confirmed person is Bud Black!

I was hoping to get Adrian's auto on a baseball before he leaves for Boston and possibly get autos from Mathews and Legedu. If anyone is willing to help me out, I would appreciate it. I'll reimburse you for the cost of the items autographed and cover your entrance fee to the event. LMK.
