That's not too surprising. I've never felt in danger walking around San Diego at night. *The amazing thing is that Los Angeles is now ranked # 3. I guess the gang bangers found something else to do? Let's hope so!

When the Raiders come in to play the Chargers, San Diego drops to #198.

I believe this.
San Diego, and Poway in particular, are the safest places I have ever lived in.

OK.........I do believe that San Diego is a safe city and that you can walk the streets without fear. The thing that I have a problem with is that they are saying New York City is the safest city in America. I honestly just cant see how that is possible.
Am I the only one who feels that way??

At first it does sound odd, but it's all % based -- so NY's pop is just so large, that even if there is more total crime, the % isn't as high.
Also, in some ways, an urban environment can actually reduce crime, because the large numbers of people on the street all the time deter any criminal acts from being performed (lots of eyes).

The reason why is because the crimes aren't being told or solved. They (FBI) is to lazy to investigate. :D

I was in NYC this time last year and did not see any crime.
People walked the streets at night (mid-town Manhattan, near Harlem, and upper Manhattan).
There was law enforcement everywhere, and they seemed bored.
The subways were peaceful (but dirty).
I give credit for NY residents getting fed up with crime and Giuliani for fixing it. They had a chance to see what life was like in the city without much crime.

Ah, ha! I know why Los Angeles ranked so high. It's highest crime areas are suburbs and technically seperate cities (Inglewood, Compton, East LA, etc.) and don't count as part of the city of Los Angeles. Although they are right next door and part of the same county.
And yes, New York City has really cleaned up it's act crime wise. I have a friend in Queens and she has told me about it numerous times. Unlike most California cities, they've hired alot of Cops in NYC since 9/11, and it worked.

LA is no way 3rd. I work out there and there is a lot of crime. But Bratton has LAPD out there in force.
