The Kansas City Chiefs have been talking to the Jacksonville Jaguars about quarterback Tyler Thigpen, according to a league source, but have been unable to come to an agreement to this point. Thigpen is stuck behind starter Matt Cassel, and with fellow backup Brody Croyle coming off a decent preseason performance and with him also having a close relationship with offensive coordinator Chan Gailey, Broyle has been the favorite to win the No. 2 job.
Thigpen has also shined at times in the past and did some nice things last season when starting for the Chiefs. He would welcome the opportunity to move on to an organization where he might have a better shot of getting on the field, according to a source. To this point the Chiefs have been seeking draft-pick compensation higher than the fifth round, according to a source, while the Jaguars have been dangling a fifth-rounder.
Jacksonville is very thin at quarterback. Tampa is shopping Byron Leftwich and Luke McCown, but Leftwich was already with the Jags for much of his career and that’s not a good fit, while Thigpen has out-performed McCown and is younger with more upside. Jacksonville has been in contact with Tampa Bay, too, about its quarterbacks. Minnesota could eventually shop one of its quarterbacks as well, with several league execs believing Tarvaris Jackson has the best chance of being someone put on the trade market.

More on the Tampa QB situation (http://blogs.nfl.com/2009/08/26/more-on-the-tampa-qb-situation/)

As I reported last night (http://blogs.nfl.com/2009/08/25/bucs-listening-to-offers-for-any-qb-but-freeman/), the Buccaneers are shopping all three of their quarterbacks not named Josh Freeman. After talking again to some people who have been in contact with the Bucs, the focus is on veterans Byron Leftwich and Luke McCown, who have been competing for the starting job.
Leftwich has played better and has engendered more locker room support, but McCown is someone ownership invested a $2.5 million signing bonus on. Neither has won the job to this point — though Leftwich has been better — and by dealing one of them, the quarterback conundrum in Tampa would be solved without having to pick one.
It may take an injury or another team’s backup to go into a deep funk to create a frothy market for either veteran. The Bucs would likely have to be satisfied with a fifth- or sixth-round draft pick for either quarterback.
Tampa Bay rates its fourth quarterback, Josh Johnson, highly and is not as inclined to part with him, according to league sources, and that coupled with the fact he has no real regular-season experience makes it less likely a team would trade a mid-round pick for him; I don’t see the Bucs dealing the second-year passer for anything less.

Won't trade your fourth QB, why the hell didn't you just use him as your starter? I felt like he could be a good NFL QB.

Trade Whitehurst for Josh Johnson.

Josh looks like he could be a good NFL QB and if worst gets to worst we can move him to RB or WR. He is fast enough to be both.

Brilliant move by Jacksonville if it goes through. Thigpen is already decent and has a chance to be really good. I'm surprised no other teams have tried to pick him up.

The Chiefs have committed to Cassell already so why pretend like Thigpen has a future there.

A 4th or even a 3rd round pick for Thigpen would be a bargain!

Normally I would agree that a 3rd or 4th would be a good deal for an insurance policy like Thigpen, but the line right above that...

...they're coming across as a team that is trying to get anything they possibly can for their #3 QB. And when a team offers you a 5th-round pick for a player who looks to be a 3rd-string player at the start of the season... that's a pretty good deal to me. The Chiefs might get a better pick, but it would probably be something like the LeKevin Smith deal where they send a 6th/7th to the Jags + Thiggy for a 4th(?).

Trade Whitehurst for Josh Johnson.

That would be an incredible deal!

Wow What cool news. I can confess wout shame that I am a fan of Thiggy. I would love to see him on anohter team that I could also cheer for. While sharing this late breaking news with my KC fan friend, he informs me Thigpen threw 20 TDs last season. I knew he did alright didnt kno he already was chuckin 20 TD seasons with less than 16 full games as the starter.
Not so sure on the draftpic value that KC really wants, he tells me that KC fans are hearing that they want a 3rd. Pretty high imo for like mentioned a guy who will be starting at 3rd string at season start at best. I hope the settle for a 4th and Jax comes off the holdin oout a 5th offer.

KC will want extra draft picks for their continued rebuilding project.

My favorite parts: (pretty much most of the meat of article lol)

He ended up accounting for 22 touchdowns (18 passing, three rushing and one receiving) in just 11 starts for a 2-14 team that had some deep flaws. Roethlisberger, a $100 million QB, won a Super Bowl with help from the game’s best defense and accounted for 19 TDs (17 passing, two rushing) in 16 starts.

So Thigpen, as a second-year pro with no prior experience and a last-place roster around him, threw for 2,608 yards and 18 TDs with 12 interceptions in the first 11 starts of his career. And Roethlisberger, already fully polished and with a Super Bowl-quality roster around him, threw for 3,301 yards and 17 TDs with 15 interceptions in 16 games. Hmm, interesting. And Roethlisberger had as many turnovers as Thigpen did scores.

(Personally, I think he’s a heck of a lot better than Croyle, for one, but I’m obviously not running any NFL teams) QFT!

In the final 10 games, all starts, Thigpen threw 16 touchdown passes to eight interceptions. Not too shabby. And that’s far beyond anything the first-round bonus babies (JaMarcus Russell and Brady Quinn) from Thigpen’s draft class (2007) have accomplished

Wow, I never thought I’d write this much about Tyler Thigpen, but, alas, it has happened. But how can you not like the kid? Never invited to the combine, seventh-round pick by the Vikings, claimed off waivers by the Chiefs in September 2007, tore his medial collateral ligament that rookie season and then ended up starting 11 games the next year when no one expected it, and, best as I can tell, did some pretty nice stuff.

The Jaguars have expressed the most interest to this point, and that’s one of several teams with a significant need for a backup QB. The Bills, Bears, Packers and Saints also have been closely monitoring the QB market. And people I talk to around the league don’t discount the Patriots making a move for a QB, too — particularly one who could provide a Wildcat element. The Ravens seriously considered trading for Thigpen before ultimately opting to sign Cleo Lemon a little while back, league sources said.

Some team will come away with a solid prospect in Thigpen, and frankly, I’m not quite sure why the Chiefs didn’t give him more of a look before locking in on Cassel. QFT!!

I gotta laugh again considering when they even pulled Cassel in I thought this exactly. WTH is haley thinkin?? Owell I went thru this twice after they actualy signed him to a 60 mil contract longterm with like 45% guarunteed. UGH And I was hoping they could best the DOnks for 3rd in the DIV. :/

I also read earlier GB is shoppin for a TB QB. I wonder if they even have Thigpen on their radar? UGH at the thought of him goin to NE.

Concur. Frankly, I disliked facing Thigpen and his mobility much more than I anticipate fearing anything Cassell might do as a straight pocket passer. I liked what I saw of him as a player think he's going to be a pretty nice quarterback with a couple of more years of experience. If he's gone from this division it won't hurt my feelings.

FYI Cassel rushed for 270 yards last year compared to Thigpen's 386. He clearly isn't the rusher or quite as mobile as Thigpen is but he has shown that he is mobile for a 6'4" 230 pound quarterback and he is able to move around in the pocket or rush for the first down.

Yes, Cassel has some "escapability" but when you say he "clearly isn't the rusher or quite as mobile as Thigpen," you ought to use the same stats to demonstrate the extent to which your statement is true, because seriously, it was the combination of Thigpen's arm and his feet that gave me, and I'm sure, defensive coordinators some concern. In eleven fewer rushes, he ran for 116 more yards than Cassel, and a 6.2 yard per carry average versus Cassel's 3.7. While not a Michael Vick, Thigpen is a legitimate threat to take it to the house in the right situation; something that is hard to game plan for.

naaa, the 9ers have a solid QB in hill.

no biggie.

guys like thigpen, schuab, hill dont need to be Pro bowl QB's, they just need to get there yards in on 3rd downs, not make any mistakes, etc. etc.

its just an addition when your QB is like brady, manning or :17:. ;)

lol

Man that game last night didnt need to end with Cassel injured. :/ They probably keep him now. Speakin of QB hungry teams, Den sure could use some lol. Orton went out with a cut index finger. Simms was injured last week. But KC will end up keepin Thig now and Haley realizes what he already had. Or they go with Gutierez as the 1st and thig makes 3rd qb.

Idiots shoulda just kept Thigpen as starter and left the Patriots with a $16M backup.
