This morning on CBS, they just mentioned an addendum rule that could penalize a player 15 yards (unsportsmanlike) for taking out a ref. What do you think about this rule?
Also, they mentioned that they will be watching for wide receivers using ref as a PICK, and mentioned WES WELKER. I for one am glad to see this one, as the Colts and Patriots have used this strategy for years. Have the Chargers employed this method??

i think it's a great rule
but like rules like this, it's gotta be subjective, they should have to prove intent of the player, to harm a ref, not just because a stupid ref got in the way

Most of the contact I've seen between players and refs have been the fault of the ref being in the wrong position during the play.
If a receiver is running a route, and makes his cut ... and it takes a ref off their feet, should there be a 15 yard penalty??
What if someone blocks another player into a ref? That would be a great way to pick up an automatic 15 yards.

Exactly! and while their at it how about making sure it's not men over 60 out there that are nowhere near fast enough to get out of the way of a bunch of 200+ lb men in their 20's and 30's.

If a player intentional hits reff then yes... but the reff needs to be aware of the rougths and get the heck out of the way.

I can see this happening. The Officials have been gettin stampeded alot this season.

If a player is intentionally trying to injure the ref, then of course they should be punished, but most of the time it's accidental contact. This rule would just give all of us viewers a bunch of headaches. If they don't want to get hit, they need to get out of the way. If the league is concerned, they should hire, younger faster, sturdier referees.

I saw one stumble all on his own yesterday running the sideline. Tried to turn his hips and tripped over his own feet.

The refs should have to wear padding. Problem solved. They should know anyway that's there's an inherit risk to being a ref.

^^^^ Agree
I just get a real funny image in my head of Refs running around with helmets
http://content.usatoday.com/communities/thehuddle/post/2009/10/will-nfl-to-require-umpires-to-wear-helmets-in-2010/1
The NFL may consider requiring umpires -- who stand in the middle of the field where linebackers usually set -- with helmets next season, ESPN reported (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4593230).
The league is concerned with the danger to umpires, after two incidents this season have resulted in collisions between players and umpires.
The network that said owners discussed the issues at this month's league meetings and that the competition committee may consider mandating helmets in the offseason.
Such a helmet could be similar to players' helmets or resemble those worn in baseball, ESPN said. MLB started requiring base coaches to wear helmets in 2008 after minor-league umpire Mike Coolbaugh was struck and killed by a line drive in 2007.
In 2007, USA TODAY's Jeff Zillgitt spent a weekend with referee Ed Hochuli's crew, and he outlined the responsbilities of each official in this graphic (http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/2007-10-09-managing-the-game_N.htm).
Umpire Chad Brown said at the time that it's his job to be "forceful enough" to focus on the players along the line of scrimmage and be able to break up fights there. -- Sean Leahy

With the role of the Umpire, he's usually going to be in the way of someone, but that's the price of having someone just behind the Linebackers. He has to drop back on pass plays so he can get the spot for a short pass, and stay close for running plays watching for holds.
Offensive players using the refs as picks is annoying as it comes (I played CB lol) so I suppose I'm happy to see it being made illegal. That said, there could be some contentious calls because what's going to happen if the slot WR runs a slant?
AFAIK, intentionally hitting a ref (even if you're trying to get him out of your way to score a TD/make the tackle) has always carried a Unsportsmanlike Conduct penalty, and rightly so. Gotta remember, no refs = no game.
And now I hope I don't sound like I'm a fan of the refs.
