I felt it would be helpful to create a translator/spelling/grammar thread to aid fledgling sports writers in honing their craft and provide the frustrated with a few chuckles. :D
I therefore present to you the official CMB to english translator:
There QB is terrible = Their QB is terrible
We should of won = We should have won
It was a big lose = It was a big loss
Noone is stepping up = No one is stepping up
Their D line is to strong = Their D line is too strong
Your wrong about Rivers = You're wrong about Rivers
I'd rather have picks then sacks = I'd rather have picks than sacks
This is a short list. If anyone would like to add to it, please feel free. If the moderators hate it, than they can delete it. Thanks.

really, is this necessary?
not everyone in the world was given an opportunity to go to college.
not everyone tries to write pulitzer prize winning words.
not everyone has the same advantages that others do...
The beauty of this forum is that everyone on here can talk freely and we are all equally understood. Spellings and nuances of typing should be irrelevant to the purpose of another man (or woman's) thoughts and ideas.
Maybe the spell and grammar check needs to be turned off in your head.. this is football and football discussion. The last time i checked, the playbook didnt include a vocabulary and spelling test.
(or in wilhelm's case a basic arithmetic test.:D)

I agree with the OP. It shouldn't be too much to ask for people to type a complete sentence. It has nothing to do with going to college LABoltsfan. This is basic stuff that you learn in third grade. It's not just on this board, it's everywhere. To add to that list from the first post: Prolly is not a word, it's probably.

just for perspective... i'll give you 2 examples..
1) My own family member... he has dyslexia... For him to read and write he has taught himself words as symbols (much like chinese.) He reads "THE" as a symbol and not a collection of letters... When he writes his words are quite similar to some of those people chastise on this forum.
2) Foreigners... Because english wasnt taught to them and they are trying to communicate, it's ok to make fun of them?
Do you remember how difficult it was for you in your foreign language class? Do you remember the strange rules and nuances that made you crazy? For some, English is that difficult too.
This forum is about communication, not grammar school. Not everyone has the same opportunities to achieve the minimum standards you require.

I don't think the point of the thread was to make fun of everyone. The point was that there are a lot of people on here that continue to use incorrect grammar for basic sentences. I think it was more of an observation type thing. I read posts all the time and think the same stuff, but never really want to be that guy that to start stuff in threads because someone typed "should of" instead of "should have." It's not just on this board, it's people on facebook accounts, texting, etc. It's reasons like twitter and texting that people can't write complete sentences. There was an article a while back that kids in high school can't write papers anymore and their papers look like long text messages.

Hence the second part of my message... I could really care less about how people type in a forum, or really anywhere else outside of anything professional. I was just poking a little fun at the college statement ;) Like I said, its a football forum, no reason to be pc or care about spell / grammar check.

There is no excuse for those who are adults, and yet display a glaring lack of effort to communicate clearly.
Like it or not - In the real world, you are graded daily on your ability to speak, write, and communicate effectively.
This is a football forum....but if you communicate like an idot, it's likely that your posts and views will be considered as such.
There's no harm or shame in trying to be the best you possibly can.
There is harm and shame for those who easily accept, and make excuses for, their effortless failings.
That said, my submissions are:
1. Prolly = Probably. You've got to be really lazy to use this non-word.
2. When a player is referred to by initials or some made-up lame nickname- that often requires the reader to spend more time trying to establish the identity of said player.

Two different posters pointed out the incorrect spelling that I use. Not for laziness and not because I do not know the correct spelling.
I know how to spell probably. I have frequently used prolly. Oh well. Hate me if you must.
I have seen plenty of errors, many of which are my pet peeves. But unless I am bashing the poster for a different reason anyway, I don't point out the errors.
Many of my pet peeve errors were pointed out in the OP. Most of the time when I read these and other errors, I figure that my teachers made more of a big deal out of them then the teachers of the people making those errors.
Some of the errors are funny and may possibly be due to the person posting them never seeing them in print, only hearing them. Like out of bounce instead of out of bounds. Or the point is mute rather than the point is moot.
I know I have seen others, but can't remember them right now.
The only time they really bother me is when the post is incomprehensible. But most of the time I know what the poster means to say, so there is no problem.
I suppose now I have to start using probably instead of prolly. What a bummer!

I think it is sad that people have become so lazy that they can't use proper grammar because it is "just a message board," or "just Facebook." That should be no reason to stop using correct grammar. I have no problem with acronyms like lol, rofl, lmao, or anything like that. But when people mis-use words like your instead of you're, or they make it even worse and just say ur, it just makes me angry. Your teachers didn't spend all that time pounding the rules of grammar into your head just so you could piss it all away on the Internet.

Mispelling on this board is a mild nuisance at best. The need of certain inividuals to draw attention to themselves by starting inept threads and/or calling out other members is by far more pathetic. IDK, if this is gramatically correct but the only term that comes to mind is drama queen.

This came up on the forum before. I don't know if the statement from Cambridge was real, but there was a story of a study that found that emails (I don't think they were studying blogs and message boards) could have a certain percentage of errors and be comprehensible to most people.

I downloaded a program that does this experimental mixing up of words -- take any paragraph and throw it in. It's pretty easy to read. Maybe I haven't put in complicated paragraphs. But really, it's hyperbole to begin with because usually you only run into a few grammatical/spelling errors.
While on a forum I'm essentially going to ignore such errors (no need to respond if I could "decode" and get the point of the post), it is kind of sad when you think your little nephews and nieces are just doing "text talk", but then you find out they really have no idea how to write and spell. An error here or there? No biggie. But honestly, it's shocking how poor some people write. And if it gets too horrible, those people's posts are just going to be ignored. It's only to their benefit to do something about it. Still, on a Chargers forum? No biggie. Sometimes I wonder when you make a mistake in speech or writing, but it's OBVIOUS what you intended, why book nerd / English majors can't just accept their ability to deduce meaning from what is read. Books would be horrible boring if they had to explain all the details, wouldn't they?
I'll be honest. I did fine in high school. Got into a university. Did fine there. But when I took my business writing class? Holy crap! That teacher pwned us many times each class. The first month SOLID in the class was about grammar, and a lot of students (no exception here!) got raked over the coals learning the rules. I wish I could remember them all. It was a fun class in many ways (I kept the grammar book). But there was a LONG LONG list of rules. Every paper we had to write took a brutal amount of time to get perfect. The professor docked us harshly on the tiniest mistakes (which he would call RED FLAGS).
Anyway -- going through High School just fine, then realizing I knew this little about English grammar -- that was quite a shock.

It's all about communication.
We probably wasted our time learning grammar... with modern tech and culture. In fact, I'm wondering what future grammar has at all besides for legal and business stuff. That may be just ok, though.

Do you remember how difficult it was for you in your foreign language class? Do you remember the strange rules and nuances that made you crazy? For some, English is that difficult too.
This forum is about communication, not grammar school. Not everyone has the same opportunities to achieve the minimum standards you require.
Yes, dyslectic people get to make spelling errors
and yes, there are a lot of foreigners on these boards, however, most of them are from England, so they should be able to write proper English anyways. Me, I'm from Belgium (country's first languages: French & Dutch, NOT English, we do get English classes though, but I imagine it's not to the extent that you guys get it) and even I can spot those errors in a second and would rarely make them myself. English is not hard. One of the easier languages.
I do understand the comments about the 'grammar police' and stuff, though. I would never make a thread about grammar because of those comments and because I know people don't like nitpickers. And that's what Nuts-n-bolts is: a whiny nitpicker. But I get him, I think the same thing as him when I read 'your' in stead of 'you're'. I just shut up and move on to the next word in the sentence.
EDIT: made a spelling mistake :LightsOut:

just to throw one really common spelling error that I see a lot on the CMB, I don't think there is any way that the Chargers can "loose" a game. It might be a typo in some cases...but some people type it again and again. Just bugs me.

Maybe therein lies a grain of truth. Maybe those who make the kind of posts in question had teachers whose philosophy of teaching was "pounding it into their heads". It certainly seems to be a popular strategy among the CMB members to get our messages through. We must have learned the technique from somewhere. I am sure it works with some people, but others might be resistant to being pressured and perhaps have turned away from their teachers methods of teaching grammar. Just a thought.

lol...English is one of theeeeee hardest languages to learn. There are no rules...and when there are rules...there are exceptions.

like in every other language, but then easier
yes, English is hard, just like every language is hard, but I'm talking basics here. And I'm pretty positive English is quite an easy language if you want to just get the basic knowledge.
English isn't even my first language and I still think it's easier than my real first language.

To this I'll add as one of the most misspelled worlds on the CMB:
rediculous (ridiculous)

This is a personal pet peeve of mine, but since we're splitting hairs here:
People, it's "COULDN'T care less", not "COULD care less".
As in, "I couldn't care less if someone thinks I misspell too many words in my post."
To say you "could" care less, means you have some capacity left for caring.

other languages are harder with the different pronouns and stuff for masculine, feminine, and neutral. and also talking about the past is kinda hard.
