Belichick has a reputation for risky moves, but this was a horrible call on his part and it absolutely cost them the game. It's not even like they were past midfield. They were giving a short field to arguably the best QB in football with plenty of time to get those 29 yards or so.

BUt why is it for the Colts that its a 'regular season win streak?' For say, the Chargers, Ravens, Bills or Texans, it would be 18 of their last 19 games. Its not a 'win streak' if there is a break in winning, therefore it is NOT a true 18 gm winning streak.

Edit: It is an 18 game REGULAR SEASON win streak, yes, but that is a stupid stat.

That was an incredibly interesting moment. I couldn't believe they actually snapped the ball. I thought they were just going to try and draw them offside. I guess he'd completely lost confidence in his defense. But if I had Tom Brady and a short passing game that worked as well as NE's all night I might have made the same call. Brady praised the call after the game. Can't argue with BB's success this decade.

I am so happy I found a thread on this (like there wasn't going to be one though). But after watching them talk so much **** about belicheat on ESPN if they would have made it on 4th and 2 they would have been sucking him allllllll up. Talking about how "if he were to have punt it peyton would have time to score blah blah blah. But instead he went on it on 4th and 2, called the perfect play and showed us what a true genius he is."

SDfan
11-16-2009, 12:39 AM
what are people complaining about, he made that 1st down game over... how far can you kick it? to the colt's 20-30 yard line max... and you have to account in a lucky kick return... with the way they been playing scoring **** load, would you not trust that offense to pick up 2 yard?

I saw the 4th down play like 2 min before it started... just logic, there's a huge possibility of going for it if they can't get the 1st on that 3rd down.

Chargrfan
11-16-2009, 02:16 AM

Both cost them the games right?

If you think a 180lb back can take it through a Ravens D line that has been owning you all game for a first down when your QB is having a career day, terrible play call.

If you think a motivated colts defense who got back in to the game after a huge deflict is gonna allow a 4th and 2 from your own 28, terrible play call.

Hate to be the only one to say this... but that was a horrible spot and if I were BB I would be pissed. He looked past the first down marker. Whoever said he was juggling the ball is crazy. He had that first down. Now time for the smack talk....

BTW... I am a HUGE BB and Brady hater. I don't like the way BB plays the game or how he conducts himself. And I hate Brady on principle alone bc WE should've gone to the SB. So in no way did I want them to win. I just think it was an awful spot.

Hardboiled
11-16-2009, 04:57 PM
It's called risk analysis.

Many here think that going for it lost the game. What you miss is that in BB's mind, if they punted the game was likely lost. He obviously thought the defense was probably not going to stop Indy. That reduces the risk of going for it. The reward was a first down and the game. The risk? Indy was aleady running all over the Patriots D. They would have from midfield or the Patriots 28.

What's likelyhood of getting 2 yards? What's the likelyhood of Hanson 30 - 40 yard punt? What's likelyhood the getting any rush when Indy gets the ball back?

I would have punted hoping for an Indy mistake. But I get why BB went for it. Saying that's what lost the game is simplistic.

Riverside

Interesting article in Yahoo that says if the pats went for it, by percentage, they had a 79% chance of winning, and by punting, they had a 70% chance, I guess when you have Brady and that offense, you wouldn;t not want to try for two.

Anyway, I don't think that alone lost them the game, its a game of four quarters, and if Brady hadn't thrown that pick in the end zone, or Maroney fumbled it in the end zone, things would have gone differently.
