Some coaches in pro sports are screamers and yellers. They figure the best way to motivate is to humiliate – NFL’s Todd Haley or Tom Coughlin, anyone? That’s not Buddy’s style. “If you reference other managers and coaches [in pro sports],” said Buddy, “There are a lot of guys that are the Tony Dungy type, Tom Landry or Phil Jackson – I don't see them yelling. But I'm sure when there's a message to be sent, they send it. And that's what I do, and that's not for public consumption. That's between me and the players. I don't want it out in the press when I air out a player or air out a team. I think a lot of that sometimes is self-serving.” Clearly for Buddy, keeping it in the clubhouse and out of the press is the best motivator of all.
