In this draft maybe, but overall somebody has to draft a S, might as well be us.

First of all JJ isn't just a run specialist. He's an every down SAM which means he's in coverage on 3rd downs. When allowed to rush the passer he has done so well.
Regarding the pass rush, it's totally simplistic to think its simply a matter of getting a pass rush OLB. The issue runs much deeper than that. What is required to generate a pass rush depends upon what scheme the DC is going to employ. IMO they need two players to generate that consistent pass rush with just 4 guys, which is what they said they want to do. If Pagano simply uses the same scheme used by Wade Phillips the Chargers don't need a pass rush specialist OLB. They have Barnes and Phillips who is a very under rated pass rusher. But he proved when allowed to rush the passer last year he is still very capable of bringing the heat. In one of his few snaps where Manusky reverted to the style used by Wade and sent Phillips against Sanchez, Butler got his INT due to very fast pressure from Phillips. But indications are that Pagano is probably going to run both styles of pass defense. The other being the style Manusky tried to run but didn't understand he didn't have the players for it. That scheme uses only one rush LB which they have in Barnes and English (if he's healthy). If that is the case then who they draft at OLB shouldn't be a pass rush specialist, but a 3 down OLB who can give you a pass rush when you use that scheme. Guys like Mercilus, Upshaw, Perry and Curry don't fill that requirement. Whereas guys like Ingram, McClellin, Fugger and Branch do. The second requirement is a pass rush DE/DT. Both Martin and Thomas are good early down dlinemen, but they don't bring much to the table in pass rushing. That was very clear last year. They need a DE/DT like a Fletcher Cox, Brandon Thompson, Kendall Reyes, or Mike Martin. When they use all 3 dlinemen on passing downs, they can rotate Garay in at NT, and the pass rush DE/DT along with the pass rush LB (Barnes or English). When Pagano wants to keep the oline off balance he can switch up and pull the NT, rotate in the pass rush DE/DT and use Barnes and English as the pass rush OLB. If English is hurt they can use Phillips, or the rookie OLB. In 2013 I think this defense will return to a base 4-3. The tipoff will be how they draft for the dline and LBs. If they draft a coverage LB, and if they don't draft a NT then look for them to return to a 4-3 defense in 2013. |

I think the majority of the time I disagree with you, Gato, it's because you envision us moving to schemes and packages that I don't think we'll use. I really think that's the heart of it. Because we often like a lot of the same players, we just view their roles differently.

Tim Fugger has a better shot at being a 3 down OLB than Perry or Upshaw? Oh boy.

Please God, make this happen, I would hate if AJ picked Barron in the first. (Just don`t make him pick Smith in the first )We already have a SS that is close to as good as Gregory was last season, meaning we can handle another season without a star SS. Besides, neither of these prospects are as good as people are thinking, in a draft with a good depth at the S position Barron would be a 2nd rounder and Smith a 3rd rounder. Again, please God, no.
