I think he's a risk, being over 30 and coming off of one of the most dreaded of football injuries (achilles). He's worth it if the price is right, but some stupid team (Washington) is usually willing to overpay guys like that so I am guess that we will not go there. My CB free agent of choice is Derek Cox.

I'd rather keep Martin as our key reserve DE. We've spent a lot of time developing him and he make a very good backup. He could be our new Cesaire.

Seems like the raiders want to keep him and cut their boneheaded dt(tommy kelly?) to afford him.

Plus he's kind of a knucklehead.

Also, a rookie pass rusher stands a better chance of helping than a rookie CB IMO. Joe Haden, Patrick Peterson, Morris Caliborne. All of those guys struggled, mightily at times, as rookies. It's a very hard position to play right away.
Avril has also played DE both in college, and in Detroit, not OLB, which is where many projected him in his draft year so it would be a totally new position for him to learn now at a more advanced age. At best, he'd be basically playing as a stand up DE for us the first year or two as he learns the LB position, and by then time would start to catch up to him. I too liked his talent coming out of school, but he's a real long shot to make any difference as a 3-4 OLB at this point in his career, IMO.

I hope we find a way to keep him as well. I don't know if that's possible though, and I do think he'd probably get more money elsewhere with a good shot at starting. Cleveland in one team, the Jets another, and there's numerous others that could use the type of player he's become. I still think he's still learning too, and might yet surprise people with how good he eventually becomes.

Not to mention he is gonna want a top-tier pass rusher salary, when he just isn't worth it. I think he can fit as a pass rusher, but he probably hasn't dropped back into coverage since his college days, and isn't used to the lb position.
