I think NASA just said like 2 days ago that there wouldn't be any cosmic events on December 21, 2012 that could end the world, "or at any point in 2012."

Maybe Jan. 1?

Also just out of curiousity, Dec. 21 for whom? Honolulu or Sydney?

I don't but into it either....... but let's just consider for one moment that it were true , would nasa or our government admit to knowing anything, that would cause world wide chaos?

Every 63 million or so years there is global devastation which causes mass extinctions. We are coming up on that time on the winter solstice in 2012.

An interesting aside is that it might not be actually Dec. 21, 2012. It might actually be Dec 16, 2013, as the Gregorian and Mayan calendar might actually be off by a year in recording time.

I'm sorry. I'll trust modern astrophysics and astronomers. To put it lightly, we have better glasses than they did.

there are some intersting planetary lineups around the 21st until the end of the year but nothing that doesnt happen at other times of the year

there are a couple of asteroids that will make close flybys next year.

2012 DA14 will flyby about 2/15 at only 0.09 light days away from earth but its "just" 57 meters wide.

the other one is quite a bit bigger but will be much farther away and should put on a nice show as it should be fairly bright in the late spring.

if your interested in that "stuff"this is a pretty good straight forward site with none of the "wacky" stuff.

Good stuff.

I get email alerts from NASA when the space station will be visible from our house. We've went out and checked it out twice. Pretty cool to see.

They have a website you can sign up at, and they'll notify you when it's going to be going past your place. If anyone wants it, I'll post it up.
