I believe Rivers should be on his way out with Norv Turner and AJ Smith after this season. I think the suitable replacement would be to bring in Alex Smith. Kaepernick already has that starting job and is clearly the future for them. We can bring in Smith considering that he is in the prime of his career with a few solid years left and wouldn't break the bank with the signing.
At least Smith has some decent mobility and can roll outside the pocket....with Rivers, as soon as the pocket collapses or sometimes doesn't even collapse, whenever he rolls out, it will result in an interception or incomplete.

Alex Smith? The same Alex Smith that was on the hotseat for years before Harbaugh saved him?
No thanks. I'd rather draft someone in the next 2-3 years.

My opinion is predicated, though, on having our defense be stout (which I think it looks like, and should be), and on developing a running game.

I don't think fans realize that Rivers is the only reason this place is going to be one of the top coaching destination. |

Hell no. First off, Rivers won't be leaving unless someone will offer a 1st round pick. He is 30 not 35 years old. Second, Smith is a game manager. The Chargers have a very similar team in terms of talent that Smith had when he was sucking. He would be garbage here. Going for Flynn or Smith is a Cardinals type move that won't work.

Smith is in a VERY controlled scheme. Rivers was not, and when the OL collapsed, so did Rivers ability to deal with it. At some point, the pressure got too much, and he began making stupid decisions at times. Then again....who else could win the games? No RB ability, defense isn't great.....he's making some desperate throws in an attempt to win...cause and effect.... |
