For now, Chiefs running back Priest Holmes ' season is over due to neurological injuries. But it doesn't mean his career is over just yet.


Priest Holmes wants to play next season but may not be cleared to.
Holmes said during last summer's training camp that his goal was to play two more seasons -- this one and next. Now he is scheduled to undergo another battery of medical tests in 30 days, then more in 60 days, to determine whether he will be able to play again next season.

Without Holmes, the Chiefs will feature running back Larry Johnson, who repeatedly has been outspoken in his desires to carry the football more often. Now he will have that chance. Also, don't be surprised if the Chiefs use a lot of one-back sets, with Tony Richardson as the featured back. It is something they have done before, and something they will do again.

Whether Holmes ever returns to Kansas City is now the biggest question facing the Chiefs. A lot could be impacted by the widespread changes that seem inevitable in Kansas City. Head coach Dick Vermeil's contract expires after this season, and a new head coach is expected to be in charge next season.

Holmes is a great back and an overall good guy. I wouldn't wish a season or career ending injury on any player... Except maybe TO. But, that's a whole different story.
