44. Ask Gus.
For what I was guessing, they're the same.

4 down lineman either way.

2 ILBs, but playing their reads, etc as they would in a 34 or a 44.

8th man is a safety, apparently the rookie

OLB on the other side can be a DB type, a tweener LB, or a hammer.

Either way, 8 men attached to the box with a single high.

So of course, we'll go traditional 43 and play 2 or 4 behind it

Gus really pushed for Rayshawn, once they let him have a pick.

Jatavis is still the only LB who can cover somebody.

Hope we don't get gashed by TEs.

I'm curious as to the LB/DE situation, but we'll all know soon enough.

Fight for a Depth Chart!

I've watched a lot of Jenkins now... average on the backend but in the box, coming downhill against the run, he can be very good. Totally misused at Miami... no wonder why he got lost in the weeds of the draft. This is a good scheme fit and I think he could well outperform his draft position, given what our Defense will ask him to do.

Our early picks should be used to acquire guys in the trenches to satisfy our new offensive and defensive systems respectively.

Luck and Magic are two elements we sorely lacked in recent drafts. Gandalf approves the 2017 Charger draft.

I'll first say that for LB personnel, we're pretty similar to Jax:

........W...............M.............S
Telvin Smith... Posluszny... Jack

I think Toomer and Brown are similar to Smith and Jack, so I think we would have:

Toomer........ Perryman...... Brown

Where Perryman is our downhill thumper and Brown can cover TEs if need be. If we bring back Toomer, we have 3 solid starters at LB.

I think it's important to keep in mind two things: (1) under and over are pretty different in terms of alignment, and (2) we'll still likely spend 70% of the time in a Nickel subpackage where we have just 2 LBs out there.

Let's dive into the fronts (parenthetical %s assume that we're evenly split between Under and over fronts while spending a majority of the time in Nickel).

4-3 Under (15-20%)

Though it's a "4-3" vs our existing "3-4", this is a pretty similar front to what we had this year, with the SAM down on the LOS responsible for contain vs the run.

In the Under, I think our existing personnel is quite good. I would expect to see Emanuel down there at SAM, Bosa as the 4 tech DE, Mebane as the 1 tech NT, then Liuget as the 3 tech DT and Ingram at Leo.

LB would probably be Brown and Perryman. Emanuel can be upgraded, but since this is a part time role that may not be necessary. SS generally gives me some concern... I really like Addae but can he consistently match up with TEs? TBD.

4-3 Over (15-20%)

This is the front that would be new/materially different for us, but as mentioned before I do think we have most/all of the personnel to run this effectively.

Left to Right:
SS Addae(?), 6 tech DE Bosa, SAM Brown, 3 tech DT Liuget, MIKE Perryman, NT Mebane, WILL Toomer, Leo Ingram.

I won't cover Nickel bc again I don't think it's much different than how we run now. Bosa and Ingram will be on the edge with 2 DTs, 2 LBs and 5 DBs. Again this will be ran 60-70% of the time (or in other sub packages that are similar).

So let's talk personnel holes:
- CB - if/when Flowers is cut, we probably need to add at least 1 quality CB in the draft (especially given Verrett's injury history)... one with size that can specialize in zone coverage would be nice. Desmond King.
- FS - true center fielder. Lowery is an average starter, not a liability but not a game changer either. Tre Boston
- SS - can Addae match up on TEs? Rayshawn Jenkins
- Leo / SAM (under) depth. Emanuel can be replace but again this is only a part time role... also, Ingram is going to get paid, which tends to lead to a complacent season, and even if not we have to be concerned about his injury history... I know we have Jerry but he has injury issues of his own.
- 3 tech depth - Liuget is overpaid and will be a cap casualty candidate next offseason... it would be wise to start lining up a replacement. Isaac Rochell
- NT - Mebane was a great add last year, but he's aging and coming off a significant injury. The new system with added emphasis on 2-gapping DL makes me think we should add quality depth here.
Bump. because there is soooo much meat on the bone.
Everyone like Sunday bar-b-que.

Offseason in red.
