Because the Chargers offensive line lacked depth, A.J. Smith signed veteran offensive linemen (instead of stocking the line via draft choices in rounds 1-2).
In the 2009 opener against the Raiders, Marcus McNeil was injured but could not be taken out of the lineup because there were no more offensive linemen available. The Chargers scrambled to find offensive linemen, signing Jon Runyan to play tackle, Eric Ghiaciuc to play center, and center-guard Dennis Norman.
When there was a contract dispute with left tackle Marcus McNeill, the Chargers signed Tra Thomas, who'd been released by the Jaguars.
In 2011, the Chargers didn't sign left tackle Jared Gaither when he was available before training camp. The Chiefs signed him but the Chargers were able to sign him up for a successful five-game run late in the season. His performance led the A.J. Smith offering him a contract for 2012.
