Unfortunately, there's no such thing as a player beyond being traded anymore. The days of owner loyalty are long gone. It's all about the bottom line of business...$$$.

Loyalty doesn't get you championships, and if those guys weren't worthy of the trade off, Gates isn't even close. BTW last elite TE to win a SB: Shannon Sharpe, 2000 Baltimore Ravens |

Gates hasn't been elite for a while now so we should be ok.

We'd be good with an "adequate" TE, just like every other team that has won a Championship in the past dozen years. We don't need to be paying this guy a premium salary, out of respect for things done in the past. That $$$ should be going towards more important positions/players which will hopefully help bring a championship to this team. It's a "what have you done for me lately league" and a team that has never won a Championship shouldn't be the ones to go against that precedent.
You're just a kid, so have no problem, waiting several more decades for a championship. Not everyone else can say the same (or wants to)... |

That goes both ways. Player loyalty doesn't exist much either. Not everyone is willing to give into a hometown discount.

This team wouldn't probably be in the position it is in if they hadn't held on to certain players to the point where they had limited to no value. The players that did have value were pretty much let go for nothing but comps. This team also has a ton of holes and not enough draft picks to fill them. Not even if they hit on all of their picks. I am not expecting much in free agency. Most of the fans want to keep all of those players that do have some trade value. They want to keep Rivers, Gates, etc to the bitter end, retire as Chargers. It is hard to rebuild if a team believes in that same approach. The Jets come across to me as a very disfunctional organization, but even they are smart enough to realize that they are a long way from contending. I think they do want to trade Revis. However, due to his injury, current contract, and contract history, it is highly unlikely that they will get much for him in return. I am most interested to see what the Patriots do with Brady. I think he has two years left on his contract and is due 21 million per year. Obviously, he is going to retire a Patriot. I do wonder if he is going to extend his contract. |
