Congrats, Army. It only took 14 years, but you finally beat Navy.

San Diego State's Donnel Pumphrey just broke the all-time NCAA rushing record in their Bowl game against Houston.

Well done, young man!

t took a quarter to even get started, but San Diego State running back Donnel Pumphrey broke the FBS record for career rushing yards Saturday against Houston in the Las Vegas Bowl.

Pumphrey entered the game needing 108 yards to pass former Wisconsin star Ron Dayne's FBS career record of 6,397 yards. And after closing the first quarter with minus-1 yard on the ground, the Aztecs' diminutive star eventually found the necessary running room to put his name atop the record books. He broke the record early in the fourth quarter with a 15-yard run with SDSU leading 20-10.

While Pumphrey's career totals include bowl production, Dayne's do not, because NCAA statistics didn't recognize bowl games for purposes of season statistics until 2002. Dayne played at Wisconsin from 1996-1999, and the Badgers played in a bowl following all four of his seasons. Counting bowl appearances, Dayne rushed for 7,215 yards at UW. Dayne, the former eight-year NFL veteran, congratulated Pumphrey via Twitter, but made a hashtag of his bowl-included yardage total:

Pumphrey had a stellar senior year, rushing for 100-plus yards in 10 regular-season games, including four of more than 200. He finished the regular season with an SDSU record 2,018 yards in the most prolific year of his career.

The senior is small by NFL standards (5-feet-9, 180 pounds) but in his only game against a Power Five conference opponent this year, he exploded for 281 yards against Cal with three touchdowns. NFL.com analyst Bucky Brooks evaluated Pumphrey's performance against Cal, and believes an NFL club could target him in the 2017 NFL Draft as a "borderline Day 2 selection."

The best Offense is a good Defense.

5'9 180 is going to be trouble for his draft round. What were his receiving numbers ? Does he have good hands ? That would help him move up.

Christian McCaffrey and Leonard Fournette are both skipping their college teams bowl games to prepare for the draft. Houston's coach did not coach in their bowl game against SDSU because he had accepted another job. Discuss amongst yourselves.

That's a real shame.

It's caused in part by the diminishing of the Bowls due to the new playoff system.

But it's also caused in part by the diminishing of the Bowls due to the proliferation of so darn many of them. In the old days it was the BEST of the Pac12 vs the BEST of the Big10 in the Rose Bowl, and so forth with the other conferences.

In the case of McCaffrey and Fournette, they not only are not on the best teams in their conferences, they are on the FOURTH BEST and THIRD BEST teams, respectively.

Degraded products has already led to diminished fan interest. I suppose it followed logically that they should lead to diminished player interest, as well.

Congrats BYU!!

SAN DIEGO — Jamaal Williams was on pace for a BYU bowl record-setting performance in his first appearance in the Poinsettia Bowl since 2012.

But even his superhuman performance needed one final defensive stop to secure the Cougars’ first postseason win since Kyle Van Noy’s two-touchdown night in San Diego three years ago.

Kai Nacua was happy to oblige.

“Right when I saw him leave the pocket, I looked back at the tight end and saw him working my way,” Nacua said of Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen’s final throw of the 2016 season. “I waited, and almost overran the ball because I knew it was coming my way.

“Then I ended up picking it.”

Williams ran for 210 yards and a touchdown, and Nacua recorded his sixth interception of the season in the final minute as BYU snapped a three-year postseason losing streak with a 24-21 win over Wyoming at Qualcomm Stadium.
