Default Good drafting and free agency

That's been the difference this year. You're not going to hit on all your draft picks so you'll also have to hit in free agency.

Why have most of our past free agent signings in the past been a bust? Until this year. We got good contributors in Mebane, Hayward, and Slauson. This to go along with the good draft picks of 2016 in Bosa, Henry, and Brown. Then we have guys from previous years who are panning out.

When you have a good mixture of both a team has a chance of doing well.

Good question. They recently expanded on their scouting staff by hiring more scouts. I'm thinking this allows them to expand their scouting of players beyond the current years draft which includes players who eventually become undrafted free agents.

The players they have scouted are not just picked up immediately post draft and signed onto the Bolts team roster, but they also track players that are on respective NFL team rosters so in the event they are cut or waived they get picked up throughout the season in the event of an injury.

Chargers have prepared themselves for multiple turnover of the roster due to a string of seasons with multiple injuries...good planning and better scouting overall.

Don't forget about Benjamin. All 4 have been very good signings.

A GM must be successful in drafting in order to have the cap space to attempt signing quality FA's. The FA route is lined with mistakes, as such, it is best to be very cautious in going that way. Seems like TT's last draft was particularly good, hope he can repeat that effort a few years in a row.

That assumes that a GM arrives on the scene with a clean slate.

TT inherited AJ's Oline plus PR, at this phase of his career. TT also has had to deal with existing cap issues.

The above is the foundation for the divergence of my ideas from yours regarding the Charger's masterplan.

We have rebuilt our defense, and need just one more impactful front seven player to create an alchemy of destruction IMHO.

TEN, just on display for us, has invested very heavily, in both draft and free agency, in Oline. How's their D?

What is so bad about having a killer Charger defense, and culling together an offensive line ?

The Cowboys and Raiders are Oline outliers.

Try to emulate Tyvon+Zack+Frederick+La'el (most unusual).

Pretend that anyone, especially us, had the luxurious cap situation of the Raiders, bringing in Penn+Hudson+Osemele.

We might as well chase our own tail.

Liuget, Mebane, Bosa, Ingram, Brown, Perryman, Emanuel.

Who are you going to bench for your "one more impact player in the front 7" ?

It's not really a benching.
He's in for sub packages.
Good depth at ILB too.
